Dear Colleagues:
On behalf of Richard Veit, Faculty Director of CETL, Library Dean Ravi
Sharma, and myself, I welcome you to this Twenty-First Annual Mon-
mouth University Authors Reception. This program is one of the high
points of our academic year, as we take pleasure in celebrating the
achievements of our faculty authors who have published scholarly books
and creative works - - no mean feat given the time challenges and choices
we all face. This work, as well as all of the contributions listed in the
booklet made for this occasion by our library colleagues, underscores our
pivotal roles as the intellectual core of Monmouth University and leading
scholars and creative artists in our fields. Perhaps more important, we
bring our scholarly and creative efforts as “teacher-scholars” into the
classroom and share with students the latest thinking in our disciplines
and inspire them to pursue high standards in their own academic work.
Please join me in congratulating our faculty authors today; enjoy the mo-
ment and continue with your own scholarly endeavors so that we may
have the pleasure of honoring you next year or in some year soon.

Gospel Night By Michael Waters Publisher: BOA Editions
This book tackles the dual (and dueling) natures of our human-ity: sin and transgression; isola-tion and atrocity; love and dark-ness; and the desire for a lan-guage that can illuminate such ordinary yet disturbing spaces. It is written in a straight-forward, lyrically beautiful style while delving into risqué sub-ject matter.
“Compelling and refreshingly un-
predictable poems. . . A natural
storyteller instinctively aware of
the immediately gripping qualities
of what Horace called ‘in media
res,’ Waters seeks to home in on
something elusive, withheld, not-
quite-yet known or understood.” —
