ADMIRAL ZHENG HE by NUR FARAHIN A’SKIAH

From past centuries

before us, there were many

individuals who stood out

amongst crowds, radiating with

impeccable characteristics.

These individuals proved to be

leaders in their own unique

way. These models, such as

Hitler, Winston Churchill, Tun

Dr. Mahathir Muhammad,

Imam Bukhari, etc had their

own way of leadership and

distinct characteristics that

made their mark in history.

The leader chosen for today is

seen to be one that is not as

famous in the west as it is in

other parts of the east and yet

his voyages were considered

more prominent when

compared to more renowned

western navigators such as

Christopher Columbus,

Vasco de Gama, and

Ferdinand Magellan. He led

the world’s largest fleet in 7

epic voyages to the west. He

is Admiral Zheng He or Cheng

Ho. He is fondly named Ma he

when he was born into a devout

muslim family in 1371. He

lived at Hedai village of

Kunyang in Jinning district of

Yunnan province. This is

where he learned skills and art

of building boats. He also

observed valuable lessons in

sailing and shipping.

As an adult, he served

Zhu Di, fourth son of Emperor

Zhu Yuanzhan. From there, his

career grew due to the good

qualities shown. The peak of

his career was when Emperor

Yongle appointed him to lead

grand voyages to manifest the

wealth and power of the

‘Middle Kingdom’. It was the

bigger message he spread

through his mission was of a

noble one and the participation

that partook in those voyages

around the world including

Malacca that made him leading

navigator during that time.

As a renowned admiral,

he possessed many good

qualities as a leader. He

managed his relationships well

with his immediate superiors.

In addition to that he also took

new challenges head on. He

had access to places offering

highly skilled labor and thus

giving him the opportunity in

selecting his crew by forming a

team of close senior associates

to support him. Furthermore, he

has great communication skills.

These features mentioned

above very much coincides

with the traits theory used in

Public Administration. Traits

theory is among the earliest

approaches to leadership

which focuses on personal

characteristics of the leader

themselves. This theory

emphasizes on consistent traits

of a leader. Some of these

characteristics are evident in

Admiral Zheng He, such as

honesty and sincerity. He was

also expert in what he did;

mainly his abilities and skills

in shipping had assisted him

immensely in his voyages.

“Legendary Admiral

Zeng He travelled far

and wide even before

the well-known

Navigator,

Christopus Columbus

did,”

Sponsorship on Financial Aid for Needy

Political Science Students

Public Relations Bureau of Political Science Students’

Association (POSSA) has taken initiative to launch a

financial aid for needy students, particularly Political

Science students of International Islamic University of

Malaysia beginning of this year. The objective of this

program is to assist their living cost and the money for

educational purposes. On that circumstance, we came

out with a survey on political science students’ average

spending on meals for daily, weekly and monthly

(Figure 1) and both of their parents’ income (Figure 2)

on 100 respondents.

From the survey, the data that we found out those 28 out

of 100 respondents’ mother has 1500 and below income

while 20 out of 100 respondents’ mother has no income.

There are 15 out of 100 respondents’ father has 1500

and below income while 19 out of 100 respondents’

father has no income. In order to help the students that

in need, on 21st February 2014, POSSA has went to the

Office of Deputy Chief Minister (1) State Government

of Penang to propose the idea to YB Dato’ Hj Mohd

Rashid Bin Zainon. The visit has gone well. The

proposal has accepted and he has approved his

endowment on funding the financial aid.

Prepared by: Fatimah noor

An-Nawawi's 40 Hadith

Hadith no: 36

Narrated: Abu Huraira that the Prophet said:

"Whosoever removes a worldly grief from a believer,

Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of

the Day of Judgment. Whosoever alleviates [the lot

of] a needy person, Allah will alleviate [his lot] in

this world and the next. Whosoever shields a

Muslim, Allah will shield him in this world and the

next. Allah will aid a servant [of His] so long as

the servant aids his brother. Whosoever follows a

path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make

easy for him a path to Paradise. No people gather

together in one of the houses of Allah, reciting

the Book of Allah and studying it among

themselves, without tranquility descending upon

them, mercy enveloping them, the angels

surrounding them, and Allah making mention of

them amongst those who are with Him. Whosoever

is slowed down by his actions will not be hastened

forward by his lineage." related by Muslim in these

words.

Façade

I wear my weirdness like a thick second skin

So afraid of people getting in and close to me

and seeing all that I am

and realizing all that I am not.

And then I have to apologize for not

Being the person they thought I was.

Coming out like a fraud.

And disappointing people as if it were a talent.

Such lies I created.

So many friends I’ve disappointed

This life has been nothing but expectation and misery.

Can I fix everything with a simple apology?

If only it were that easy

People tell me to change; to be the person they thought me to be.

Unhappy with the product they see

before them and no refund guaranteed.

I’ve tried to improve

I’ve tried and tried

With this fake smile on my face and my ignorant eyes

Nothing seems right.

Everyday has been a failed effort in being better.

Should I give up? Please someone give me an answer.

All eyes on me, pressure too heavy on my heart.

It’s time to take off my mask and break my façade.
