Pat Benatar and long-time musical partner (and husband) Neil “Spyder” Giraldo, one of rock-n-roll’s most successful all-time duos, this year celebrate 35 years of collaboration with an international tour, including a performance at the Evergreen State Fair.

Thirty-five years ago, Benatar released her debut album In the Heat of the Night, including songs she cowrote with guitarist and pianist Giraldo, formerly of Rick Derringer’s band, and two of the songs charted on Billboard.

Her follow-up album, Crime of Passion, established her as a megastar. The iconic “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” broke the Top 10, and the album stayed at #2 for five weeks, stayed in the top 10 for six months, and sold 5 million copies. Benatar

Casting Crowns is America’s top-selling Christian music act, and has been since 2007. The group started out in Florida as a youth worship band, and though they have since relocated to Atlanta, they each remain active in ministry in their various churches.

The band gained regional attention in Georgia after moving there from the Daytona area, winning awards and making two albums that sold respectably. The band had no ambitions beyond local success, but when a copy of one of their songs reached Mark Miller, lead singer of the country band Sawyer Brown, things changed for the group. Miller signed the band to his personal label, and the resulting self-titled album was released in 2003 and went platinum.

The band won a Grammy for the next album, which went to #9 on Billboard, and had a #1 hit with “Praise You in This Storm.” A third album was even more successful. In all, the band has racked up six Grammy nominations, one Grammy, three American Music Awards, two Billboard awards and many other awards.

Currently the band is touring in support of the new album Glorious Day-Hymns of Faith.

won a Grammy that year for Best Female Rock Performance of 1980, and she and Giraldo appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.

Benatar was also the first female artist to appear on MTV, with the video for “You Better Run,” which also made Giraldo the first guitarist to appear on MTV. In 1982, she and Giraldo married, and they have two daughters.

In all, Benatar has won four Grammy Awards, eight platinum albums, sold 26 million albums, and has had 19 Top 40 hits, including “Love is a Battlefield,” “Hell is for Children,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “We Belong,” and “Invincible.”

Giraldo, in addition to writing more than 100 songs with and for Benatar, has also written hit songs for Rick Springfield, (including “Jesse’s Girl” and “I’ve Done Everything for You”) John Waite, Beth Hart, and Kenny Loggins.

Jerrold Neimann soared to national attention in 2010 with the album Judge Jerrod and the Hung Jury, and since then has had two more very successful albums. Country hits include “Lover, Lover” and “Drink to That All Night,”

Aside from his personal success, though, he has written for many other top country artists, including Garth Brooks, Zona Jones and Jamey Johnson.

Neimann started playing young in

small town Kansas, writing songs form the age of 8 and winning music contests from the age of 10, and playing in Texas bars when he was old enough. He moved to Nashville in 2000 and kept touring the U.S. and Canada, while writing for Garth Brooks. He got a break when Brad Paisley’s label signed him, and his songs started climbing the charts.

He tours with Lee Brice frequently, and credits Brice with saving him from a tour bus fire in 2012!

Vince Gill is one of country music’s most iconic guitarists, singers and songwriters. Since he broke out in 1990 with “When I Call Your Name,” he has racked up 17 CMA awards, and has won more Song of the Year awards than any other artist.

Born to a country musician who encouraged him to play music, Gill got his start as a member of the 1970s-era Pure Prairie League before becoming a solo artist in 1983. His first hits came out the following year, and by 1990, he’d earned a Grammy and a CMA award for Single of the Year and his album When I Call Your Name had gone platinum.

In 1992, he started co-hosting the Country Music Awards, which he did for the next 12 years, setting a record for the longest run hosting a television awards show.

In 2000, Gill married singer Amy Grant.

The CMA recognized Gill’s enormous influence on country music by recently given him the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence, given to “the originator and caretaker of demonstrated ideas and actions that have dramatically broadened and improved country music’s influence,” and BMI gave him their Icon Award, for ”songwriters who have had a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.”

Gill has won 20 Grammy awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards, including awards for his humanitarian work and for Career Achievement, and he has more CMA awards for best male vocalist (five) than any other singer. He has sold 26 million albums. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and he is a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Lee Brice was a successful artist long before anyone outside the music industry knew his name. In 2007, he wrote “More Than a Memory,” which Garth Brooks recorded, and the song was the first in the history of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart ever to debut at #1. The song he wrote for the Eli Young Band, “Crazy Girl,” was Billboard’s top country song of 2011. And he has also written for Adam Gregory and Tim McGraw.

Interestingly, he never intended to write for other people. Every song he wrote, he says, he wrote for himself.

When he finally got to record for himself, he was a phenomenal success. His album Love Like Crazy broke a 62-year-old record for longest run on the country chart, and also the longest climb on the chart; it steadily inched up for 46 weeks until reaching the Top 10, and stayed on the chart for 56 weeks, peaking at #3. He’s had four #1 hit singles.

Brice’s first #1 hit single was “A Woman Like You,” followed by “Hard To Love,” “I Drive Your Truck,” and most recently “I Don’t Dance.”

A great deal of the fun of the fair is eating fair food, like elephant ears, scones and corndogs. At the Evergreen Fair, you can snack on all your favorite fair foods, knowing your admission helped someone else eat, too.

For several hours on two special days of the fair, you can get in free with a dona-tion for local food banks. Three cans of food is all it takes to get in Friday, Aug.

28, or Friday, Sept. 4, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and your admission is good for the rest of the day!

All the food that is collected is divided between 20 Snohomish County food banks. Last year, the fair collected more than 45,000 pounds of food. The food is enormously helpful to local food banks, as donations tend to decline during the summer months.

Volunteers help sort donations at the Evergreen State Fair. Donations last year totaled more than 45,000 pounds of food. Photos courtesy of the Evergreen State Fair

Each year, the Evergreen State Fair honors an individual or family who has contributed significant personal time and energy toward the improvement and betterment of the annual fair. Their efforts can be focused in a specific area of exhibition or toward the overall function of the Fair. The fair honoree is recognized for his/her work and accomplishments at the opening day ceremony for The Evergreen State Fair.  This year’s fair honorees, Ed and Vicki Miller, did not grow up on a farm, but it was always their desire to have a farm where they could raise animals, vegetables and flowers, and watch their family grow up. After the purchase of a new animal, they enrolled their kids in 4-H, which turned out to be the beginning of a lifelong passion. The entire family became involved with The Evergreen State Fair through involvement with 4-H.

Ed and Vicki Miller 2015 Evergreen State Fair Honorees

After their kids grew up, Ed and Vicki stayed deeply involved, continuing to bring animals to the fair each year and volunteering in the 4-H Plant and Soil Science Section. The Evergreen State Fair is one of Ed’s top priorities; you will never hear about Ed and Vicki taking a vacation in August, as “it’s fair time!” The Millers enjoy interacting with the public and teaching them about animals and other things. They design their displays to be interactive for fair visitors. People stop and talk to Ed during the year to say, “Are you the guy with the babies at the ESF? We make sure to never

miss coming by to see you!”   Vicki continues volunteering as the assistant superintendent in the 4-H Plant and Soil Science Department. During the fair she cooks dinner for the judges, helps run contests, gets extra supplies as needed, helps many others in the 4-H

building and makes sure that everyone is having a great time.

Their love for ESF is what has made Ed and Vicki continue their in-volvement after more than 25 years.

The Evergreen State Fair is expanding our focus on child-safety by providing some suggestions we hope that will help parents be proactive, to take steps before they leave home for a day at the fair. We know that searching for a lost child in a crowd of thousands is one of the most terrifying experiences a family can experience.

The fair has exceptional safeguards and support in place including providing a “Lost Child Booth” (location #407 on the map) where you can pick up free ID wristbands to help identify your child. The sheriff has a facility on site that they use to monitor surveillance cameras that are placed throughout the fair to help keep track of children. We also have highly trained sheriff officers and security personnel

that patrol the grounds to help us provide a family friendly event but this is not enough - we need your help.

Helping parents and guardians prepare for a kid-safe, worry-free outing to the Evergreen State Fair is at the heart of the “before you leave home checklist” that we have developed with help from Providence Regional Hos-pital’s Safe Kids Snohomish County program and Monroe Public Schools.

Please review the checklist and let us know if you have any questions, suggestions or would like to be involved with keeping children safe during the fair.

Thank you for visiting the 2015 Evergreen State Fair!

make tracking your child easy

• Dress your child in bright clothing so they’re easy to see in crowded areas.

• Avoid becoming separated: walk at a pace that is comfortable for your child and never leave a procrastinating child behind.

• Hold your child’s hand; place small children in strollers.• Make contacting you easy• Make sure each child knows his or her full name and phone number.

Have children practice both saying it out loud and writing it down. • Write your phone number on a small slip of paper and tuck it in your

child’s pocket.

Be cLeAr, Be Firm AnD PrActice toGetHer

• Children begin to understand appropriate public behavior by age two or three.

• Lead by example. • Be firm with your rules, and have your child repeat them back to you. • Reinforce stranger danger rules, and role play strategies for safety. • Playing Red Light, Green Light is a fun way to help children practice

following your directions before the distractions of the fair begin.

Stay together in parking lots

• Never allow your child to walk or run ahead of you in parking lots. • Hold your child's hand firmly and be alert when walking in

a parking lot. • Remember that even though you and your child can see a vehicle,

the driver may not be able to see you.

Have open, trust-building conversations

• Encourage your child to talk with you about any situation that makes them feel uncomfortable. Listen and take them seriously. Report any concern immediately.

Keep photos on your phone and get

our free iD bracelets

• Take a close-up photo of your child and a photo of the two of you together and store them on your phone.

• Make a mental note of what your child is wearing and who they’re with.

• Never have your child’s name displayed on clothing or backpacks. • Get a free ID bracelet for your child at the fair’s Lost Child Booth.

Know the fair’s safe places and safe people

• Get a map immediately upon entering the fair and locate the Help Center and Lost Child Booth.

• Talk with your child about who to ask for help - fair staff, police or fair security.

• Be sure your child knows to not search for you on their own and not to leave the fairgrounds under any circumstances.

• Program your child’s cell phone with key contact numbers. • Tell you child it’s OK to call 911 if they get separated from you.

Supervise, supervise, supervise

• Adult supervision is required for children under 12 years old. • Never leave a child alone in the carnival area. If they go on a ride

without you, find a place where you can see them at all times - while they’re in line, when they enter the ride and when exiting.

• Older children should stay in groups and use the buddy system.

Accompany your child to the restroom

• Never let your child enter or stay in the restroom alone. The Events Center has family restrooms that allow you to accompany your child.

• Older children should use the buddy system when using the restroom.

For many years, pig races have been a regular feature of the fair. This year, the event goes all-in-clusive, when goats and more hit the track for the first-ever GASCAR Crazy Animal Races.

Goats, sheep, chickens, pigs and other surprise animals wear racing silks as they hoof and waddle their way around and some-times over the track! It’s educational and exciting, and includes audience par-ticipation, with presenters recruiting audience members to wave race flags and lead cheering sections for each race animal. The team leaders can even win prizes if their animal wins.

Each race begins with a fun presenta-tion and quiz for prizes, as the crowd gets revved up for the races. There could even be a dance contest. Each audience section is assigned an animal to root for, and the race begins!

A race might include a goat, a sheep, a pig and a duck, and don’t count the duck out! Seeing a duck waddling down a hay-covered track ahead of a sheep and a goat, wings spread for balance, will make kids of all ages laugh out loud!

The races are brought to you by Great American Petting Zoo, the same company that also brings the petting zoo, which this year replaces the Pepsi entertainment stage. The zoo contains a wide variety of animals including llamas, fallow deer, Bennett wallabies, African pygmy goats, assorted exotic and domestic goats and sheep, Vietnam-ese potbellied pigs, bantam chickens, miniature Sicilian donkeys, miniature call ducks, and baby animals born all year long.

Axe throwing, logrolling, sawing and some comedy mixed in - your fair day experience would not be complete without seeing the lumberjack show. This will be the Leavenworth-based Marcellus family’s thirty-fourth year producing the lumberjack shows. Their demonstrations of skill are based on the real skills early lumberjacks in the northwest used on the job. For example, when a lumberjack prepared to move from one tree to the next, he would throw his axe into the new tree, and eventually axe - throwing developed into a competition sport. Log-rolling was actually once a life-threatening practice in which loggers, who moved logs into water for easier

transport, would stand on the floating logs and maneuver them around. The loggers had to be careful not to fall, lest they slip between the logs, after which rescue was very difficult. The International Lumberjack Show began as a demonstration under the Space Needle in Seattle in 1971.

Beautiful Indian costumes, cultural teachings, and dancing are one-of-a-kind. Aztec dance was an important part of the cultural history of Mexico. In the 1590s an Aztec nobleman gathered the survivors of the Spanish conquest and they agreed to try to preserve their culture as best they could through dance. In the 1930s, there was a return to the original Aztec percussion instruments that led to a resurgence of the ancient art form. Today it is practiced much as it was a thousand years ago.

Making rope, starting powerful engines, generating enough electricity to light up a light bulb and sticking one’s fingers into an old-fashioned milking machine are just a fraction of the things kids can do at Monroe’s Western Heritage Center in Monroe.

The museum, located at the fairgrounds, is 2,250 square feet of space densely packed with exhibits and artifacts from the Sky Valley’s history. There are exhibits on mining, train travel, homemaking, timber and most of all, agriculture.

The museum is a great way to get kids to have fun while learning. There’s so much to do at the museum, kids won’t feel like they have been prematurely thrust back into a classroom.

One of the things kids can do is see how their great-great grandparents used to make rope. On a simple but ingenious device consisting of three spinning hooks operated by a hand crank, children can make their own lengths of rope to take home.

There is an old-fashioned water pump that spills water into a sink when the handle is pumped.

There is another machine that was once used to shell ears of dried corn; kids can turn it on and drop a cob in to watch it come out shucked on the other side, with the kernels spilling into a bucket.

Kids can turn on a motor to run an old-fashioned washing machine, or turn on old-time saws. They can also talk on a century-old telephone, and run a pedal-powered generator to make a light bulb light up.

A kid favorite is the antique milking machine; kids can turn them on and stick their fingers in to feel it squeeze. Another favorite is the ear-splitting air whistle, which kids can blow.

There is a lot to see, too; a train runs around the museum on a track, there’s a replica of part of an old mine, and a huge waterwheel slowly spills water into a trough. The wheel powers a huge overhead camshaft, which in turn runs some of the museum’s largest machines, including a giant old drill press that actually drills through a piece of wood.

Outside, kids who like tractors can get up close to a large number of them, including a train engine-sized machine still awe-inspiring today.

There’s enough activities to occupy kids for at least an hour or two, and the outing will be very affordable; entry is by donation, so give what you can.

The museum, located at the the far east corner of the fairgrounds in building 611, is open year-round 10 a.m-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sundays. Open daily during the fair.

nw truck Pulls and fireworks show

Thursday, Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. $16 (Kids 5 and under free)

New to the fair racetrack schedule this year is Northwest Truck Pulls. This popular competition requires drivers to pull sleds with diesel trucks to see

which truck can move the most weight. The competition will be followed by a fireworks show, plus a pit party where you can see the trucks and meet the drivers!

Supercross Summer

Shootout

Friday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m.$16 (Kids 5 and under free)

Supercross racing is exciting to watch. Motocross riders race on a dirt track including obstacles and big jumps. It is a spinoff of motocross racing, but was developed with television audiences in mind. Supercross, started in the 1970s, is now the second most popular spectator motorsport in America, after NASCAR.

Figure 8, Stinger 8, Hornets,

Pro 4 trucks and foreign stocks

Saturday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.$22 adults, $16 youth and senior (Kids 5 and under free)

These events are staples of the Evergreen Speedway racing season. Figure 8s in particular are hair-raising events, as cars race around a figure eight-shaped track, narrowly missing (and sometimes not missing) high speed collisions in the intersection. Stinger 8 and hornet races are open to local drivers, and allow teams to enter less expensive cars modified for racing.

evergreen Drift

Sunday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. $16 (Kids 5 and under free)

Drift racing is a relatively young motorsport. It began on the streets of Japan, in where drivers would navigate tight turns at very high speeds by throwing cars into controlled skids using the emergency brake. Thrown into the international spotlight by the movie Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift, the racing style involves drivers skidding sideways at speeds of 100 mph or more. The event is judged by a panel for ability to maintain the skid, or drift, the speed and the control of the car. It is a loud, smoky, exciting event, and the Evergreen Speedway is one of the country’s most successful drift venues, sometimes hosting international events.

Motorsports are a big part of the Evergreen State Fair, thanks to the Evergreen Speedway, a NASCAR “home” track that shares the fairgrounds. The track is the only one of its kind in Washington and one of about 60 nationwide. There are five racetracks at the speedway, including a dirt motocross track and an indoor course in the horse barn on the fairgrounds.

That means the track is versatile enough to serve a lot of different groups.

That is one of the reasons that the Evergreen Speedway was named one of the Top 10 NASCAR home tracks in the nation.

Racing’s up and coming drivers appear in Monroe a lot, as the speedway is one of 15 tracks in the country to host the NASCAR Pro Series West, which is the beginning level of NASCAR.

Perhaps the largest draw at the track is the relatively young sport of drift racing, and people come from all over the world to compete there. The reason Monroe is such a draw for drift racers is the speedway’s 5/8 mile track, a fairly long course for a home track.

Other regular events include drag racing, vintage car racing, motocross, demolition derbies, and more.

Here is a list of the motorsport events taking place at the speedway during the fair!

Saturday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.$22 adults, $16 youth and senior (Kids 5 and under free)

Come see the hottest NASCAR race cars take the track at this televised stock car race. Super late model cars are cars that were designed and manufactured recently, and late model racing is the highest class of racing done at local NASCAR short tracks such as the Evergreen Speedway. Most cars have engines in excess of 600 horsepower and fiberglass bodies. The class is a common stepping stone for up and coming drivers on their way to the national NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Demolition derby and huge

fireworks show!

Sunday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.$27 adults, $17 youth and senior (Kids 5 and under free)

Demolition derbies are good, noisy fun, as car bash each other until the last one moving wins. But this even has a lot more than that; come see crowd pleasing school bus races and hair-raising figure eight racing.

Then Monroe’s Mr. Dizzy, featured on the History Channel’s reality show American Daredevils, brings his pyrotechnical stunts to the track. Mike “Mr. Dizzy” Buse grew up going to the Evergreen Speedway, eventually racing himself, until, as he put it, he realized he was better at crashing than racing. He went on to build a career as a stunt driver who today holds two world records and starred in 2013’s American Daredevils, a History Channel show that followed the careers of three of America’s top stunt performers. Mr. Dizzy’s shows often include motorcycle stunts, world record attempts, spectacular jumps often involving explosions and more.

As if that wasn’t excitement enough for one day, the racetrack events are all followed by a spectacular fireworks show.

The fair is just 12 days long, but the process of entering a cat in the 4-H cat exhibits in Building 501 at the fair can take all year.

Exhibiting cats with 4-H requires a lot more than having a cute pet. Before a 4-H member can even begin to decorate a cage and put together a display, he or she must win the right to enter the fair.

To do that, the 4-H member has to complete a number of requirements, including attending business meetings, giving a presentation, creating an informational poster, attending two educational events and completing some community service.

Then the 4-H club chooses a theme and the prospective entrant creates a decorated cage for the cat.

The 4-H member also must be prepared to demonstrate a great deal of knowledge about cats, such as the names of their body parts, what traits are considered desirable, the various breeds, and more.

Over the course of the fair, the kids will take part in seven days of competition, including a Jeopardy-style knowledge bowl about cats and a costume contest, in which the cats are dressed up.

After all that study, kids become experts in the animals they show, and many eventually become fair judges.

In building 500, a long display hall near U.S. 2 at the fairgrounds, is one of the oldest and longest-running traditions of the fair.

Arranged in high, sloping displays are elaborate arrangements of homespun bounty, including fresh fruits and vegetables as well as gleaming jars of canned produce, vinegars, and more.

These are the grange displays, each topped with a decorative sign giving the name and number of a Western Washington Grange Hall. Grange halls are a significant part of farm history in the United States.

‘‘Grange is a family organization started over 100 years ago by four families in the Midwest who basically set it up to get their wares to town,” a fair official explained. “They were in conflict with the railroads at the time.”

The idea of organizing farmers to achieve common goals spread rapidly, and soon nearly every rural town in America had a grange.

Today, grange is not necessarily strictly a farm organization, but it works to support agriculture on the legislative level, and involves quite a bit of community service.

In fact, the grange was instrumental in establishing the Snohomish County PUD, and they were influential in reinstating primary elections in Washington after they were struck down.

But one of the favorite grange activities of the year is the production of the annual display of regional goods at the fair.

According to the rules, everything included in a grange display must be grown or produced on the western side of the Cascades, and cannot be bought in a store (although once the displays have been judged, replacements for wilting plant items can come from the store, allowing the displays to remain fresh for the nearly two weeks of the fair).

The night before the fair opens, the long hallway in front of the grange displays is jammed with people creating displays.

The displays are judged on the quality of the display and the attractiveness of the fruits, vegetables, poultry, dairy products, canned items and vinegars on display.

Each year, hundreds of exhibitors gather at the Evergreen State Fair and assemble elaborate displays of produce, handcrafts, animals and more. The displays are fun to see, but behind each is a story that often goes untold. Here is a look behind the scenes to learn more about the people who exhibit at the fair, and what goes into the exhibits they bring.

One of the most traditional displays at any county fair is that of homegrown produce, and the tradition is going strong at the Evergreen State Fair.

In Building 500, local gardeners and farmers display the best of what they have grown every year, hoping to take top honors.

Displays are judged on the Danish system, meaning they are not judged against each other but rather against a pre-established standard. Those exhibits that meet the standard perfectly win blue ribbons; those that are good but not perfect get red, and those that are average win white ribbons.

Displays usually contain a small group of produce items such as cucumbers, blueberries or tomatoes, and they are judged on uniformity of size, quality of the produce, attractiveness of the display and more.

There are many types of needlework on display at the fair, ranging from the very popular, such as quilting, to the positively arcane.

One of the more arcane arts is that of smocking, or embroidering over pleats, but a display including several elaborate, old-fashioned children’s dresses proves that smocking still has a devoted group of artisans in the area.

Jay Schaffert of Everett sewed all her life, but the smocking bug bit her when her first grandchild was born 18 years ago.

“The tiny things look so good on the little ones,” she said.

She made baby dresses with smocked tops; and so much did she love creating them that she continued to make them long after her grandkids were no longer tiny.

Smocking requires a lot of patience, but it is rewarding, said Schaffert.

“It’s relaxing for me,” she said.
