40 Years in FashionThis year Monsoon celebrates its 40th anniversary.

What better milestone to champion everything we love

about our label, from our traveller’s roots and celebrated

style, to our feel-good spirit and hand-crafted techniques.

We began by returning to Monsoon’s spiritual homeland,

Rajasthan in India, to shoot our Spring/Summer campaign.

Asia’s sun-drenched colours and relaxed bohemian spirit

are what originally inspired the label way back in 1973.

The natural Indian cottons, decorative artisan techniques

and lovingly hand-embellished details that we fell in love

with can all be seen in this season’s collection, which is

drenched in that special Monsoon magic. Think light-as-air

kaftans, breezy sundresses, statement jackets and

showpiece gowns.

We’ve gone back to our roots in more ways than one: this

season sees the launch of our Heritage Collection, a limited-

edition capsule range of classic Monsoon pieces, inspired by

our earliest creations. We’ve reworked favourites from our

archive, giving original Monsoon designs a contemporary

update. We think you’ll love the looks as much as we do.

TheMonsoonTrustIt’s a love thingMonsoon has always been about so much more than fashion.It is a celebration of the styles, colours and textures of Asia, born from a passion for that breathtaking continent. We believe the things we love are worth taking care of – which is where the Monsoon Trust comes in.

The Monsoon story begins back in 1973. Returning from an epic road trip across the Indian subcontinent, Peter Simon came up with the idea of a stylish, bohemian label, incorporating the exquisite workmanship and artisan techniques he’d seen on his travels. And so Monsoon’s early designs came to life from clothes made in Indian villages, created using vegetable dyes, hand - loomed cottons and heritage prints.

Monsoon may have grown from a single store into a global company since then, but we remain committed to our traditional handcrafted roots. As a sign of that commitment, the Monsoon Trust was founded in 1994, aimed at giving something back to the people and places that first inspired the brand.

Focusing on the cities and villages where Monsoon has trading relationships, the Trust supports women and children through education, healthcare and income -generating projects. Whether we’re bringing medical care to remote villages in Rajasthan, building a hostel for homeless children in Delhi, or supporting female artisans in the foothills of the Himalayas, our goal has always been to reach the people who need it most.

This year, as Monsoon celebrates it’s 40th birthday the Trust is working harder and reaching further than ever, supporting projects across India and Afghanistan in three crucial areas:

HEALTHcARE: reaching out to 5,000 women and children in remote villages in Rajasthan.

EDUcATIOn: seeking out the most needy children across four states in India and re – integrating them into education.

EMpLOYMEnT: lifting women and their families out of poverty by providing training and employment opportunities, focusing on craft skills synonymous with the Monsoon label.

Yasmin Le Bon, the face of Monsoon’s Spring Summer campaign, visits Seva Mandir and Sadhna, Udaipur, India. Both are key Monsoon Trust projects for 2013.

MOnSOOn AccESSORIZE TRUST

The Monsoon Trustbuilding on our craft heritage, we’ve created the Monsoon

Trust Boutique, selling beautiful community sourced and upcycled gifts. The collection aims to provide market access for disadvantaged artisans and those in remote rural communities. All profits go the Monsoon Trust so you can be sure a boutique gift gives twice!

This year, we’re delighted to be working with jewellery designer, pippa small, on a collection of stunning pieces made by artisans in Kabul, Afghanistan, and featured in our Spring Summer campaign (see page 48). We’re also supporting an exciting new project to revive the silk cultivation industry in Afghanistan, providing much needed livelihoods for widows. Some of our earliest collections incorporated Afghan embroidery so this is a perfect way to celebrate our 40th year.
