AMessagefromtheGeneralManager

Dear Friends,

“You can make a difference!” These five words are more than a cliché – they are a statement of fact. The expression “even not choosing is a choice” reminds us of the great opportunity and responsibility we have to positively or negatively impact our lives and the lives of others. It comes down to choice.

We are blessed to live in one of the world’s most beautiful places. California’s Central Coast is surrounded by magnificent and dramatic shorelines and bays, mountains and valleys, and productive agricultural lands. Each nourishes our bodies and souls, inspiring us from one sunrise to the next.

The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD) is part of this incredible tapestry that includes not-for-profit and community organizations, private land owners, governmental bodies, and individuals who decided long ago they wanted to make a difference. The team is also comprised of MPRPD’s world-class volunteers, Board of Directors and staff. Together, this assemblage is working hard to protect and restore our lands, rivers and ocean. We are jointly committed to research that will inform how to better understand our precious natural resources.

As previously reported, the Lobos-Corona Parklands Project team is working on several key transformational projects that will benefit our future.

Imagine…• Restoring the Carmel River to its historic health, function and beauty.

• Re-wilding former agricultural lands, the Rancho Cañada Golf Club, and reestablishing wildlife corridors within the Salinas, Carmel and Big Sur rivers’ watersheds.

• Hiking a continuous corridor from Fort Ord to Big Sur and beyond.

• Enjoying one of the world’s greatest hikes as you experience different natural habitats along the redwood tree-lined San Jose Creek, ascending to Animas Pond, and trekking across oak and pine-studded rolling grasslands onto Inspiration Point and its incredible views of Monterey Bay before descending to the Carmel River.

• Developing a network of natural areas, parks and open spaces that are universally accessible to everyone – irrespective of ability.

• Having a high-impact environmental education program jointly developed and integrated between our school districts, universities, and our open space, park and land conservation partners so every child who lives in this region – or has the good fortune to visit it – grows up to be a more environmentally literate adult.

All of this is important. All of this is possible. All of this is a choice. Let’s choose wisely to do good!

PerseidMeteorShowerThe Perseids are known to deliver a dazzling display of light each year, mid-July through mid-August. Though the moon will be bright, the light will grow dim and the show will begin. So, come out and make a wish, ooh and aah, and watch for meteors (aka shooting stars) as they dance across the summer night sky.

LyridMeteorShowerAnnual meteor showers arise when the Earth passes through streams of debris left behind by comets and asteroids. As pebble-sized pieces of debris collide with the Earth, they burn up and appear as shooting stars. In conjunction with the meteor shower the moon joins Jupiter. This cosmic duo of the waning gibbous moon making a close encounter with the bright planet Jupiter is an impressive sight.

AstronomicalAdventuresCome aboard this virtual space trip! Celestial objects will be viewed and discussed using the unaided eye, binoculars, and telescopes. We’ll see the spring constellations Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, plus the red planet Mars. There will probably be Earth satellites to view, as well. This informative PowerPoint presentation is being held in conjunction with the Lyrid Meteor Shower. Instructor: Dr. Jim Eagle, MIRA docent.
