As members of the Richmond Montessori School community, we all have a thread that connects us to one another and to the mission of this school. Together we observe, discuss, research, debate, and embrace our Montessori mission. What matters is that we are learning to be the very best mothers, fathers, grandparents, teachers, men-tors, and anchors for the young children in our lives. It is a journey, not a destination.

What we do best at Richmond Montessori School is nurture, challenge, and support children as they learn to fearlessly sail their ship and as they navigate their way to discovering who they are in this great wide world.

Philanthropy at Richmond Montessori School, 2012 – 2013Thank you! Philanthropic efforts at RMS during the 2012 – 2013 were no less than remarkable! Together, the RMS and greater Richmond community joined together to set the stage for the school’s future. Highlights of the year include:

• Successfully completing the Unfold Our Future campaign, raising

$795,000 and reaching 106% of our goal. Of the money raised, more than 50% has been collected. With 156 donors, more than 30% were new contributors to RMS.

• The Unfold Our Future campaign seeded a capital facility endowment and raised $53,000 towards renovation of the Performing Arts Center.

• Securing $495,000 in naming opportunities for the campus expansion.

• Receiving $185,000 in grant funding for RMS from The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation, the Marietta McNeill Morgan and Samuel Tate Morgan, Jr. Foundation and the Emily S. and Coleman A. Hunter Charitable Trust and completing two 2:1 match challenge grants.

• Receiving a $40,000 gift from the Richmond Montessori Parents’ Association that almost single-handedly completed the 2:1 challenge match offered by the Marietta McNeill Morgan and Samuel Tate Morgan, Jr. Foundation.

• Raising $51,000 for the Fund for Montessori Excellence campaign.

• The launch of several events specifically designed to re-connect with past leaders and parents

The Board of Trustees is pleased to report a strong financial picture of Richmond Montessori School for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013. The school’s independent auditors, Dixon Hughes Goodman, continue to give an unqualified audit opin-ion, indicating that Richmond Montessori School adheres to sound fiscal policies and strict U. S. accounting standards.

The Board and administration are committed to fiscally responsible planning. The school’s operations are funded entirely by tuition and school fees. Additional funds are raised each year and used to provide innovative program-ming and resources to enhance the fundamental Montessori education and experience for our students.

The school completed the 2012 – 2013 fiscal year in sound financial condition. Parents, faculty and friends of Richmond Montessori can be confident that the fiscal responsibility and stewardship of the school is a top priority for the Board.

To provide the essential qualities of a Richmond Montessori School education —diversity and excellence in teaching—the Board established several endowments. These endowments support programs and projects, while the principal gives the school a solid foundation for the future. Funds available for contributions include the Della Mae Reese Jefferson (DMJR) Scholarship Fund, the Martha Mabey Scholarship Fund, and the Training Educators and More (TEAM) Endowment.

The Della Mae Reese Jefferson Scholarship Fund provided $14,000 to support a portion of the 2013-2014 tuition and costs for current RMS students with demonstrated financial need. In June 2013, The Martha Mabey Scholarship Fund

generated $400 to provide three merit scholarships to support RMS middle school students’ pursuit of excellence in art, music, drama, and creative writing.

One donor saw the need to ensure that RMS facilities continue to support students’ needs and are maintained across the generations. As a direct result of the Unfold Our Future Campaign, he established the school’s first Capital Facili-ties Endowment with a directed gift of $5,000. The Capital Facilities Endowment not only ensures the upkeep of RMS all facilities, but directly addresses a recommendation from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools to pro-vide resources that support future and present facility growth. “World of Difference” Honor RollExpressions of support for Richmond Montessori School are offered in a multitude of ways and through several different groups. The “World of Difference” roll of donors captures the sum total of community support. During the 2012– 2013 fiscal year, 38% of our parents participated in at least one philanthropic endeavor. At Richmond Montessori School, tuition covers all operating costs. This is unique. Most independent schools and non-profit organizations use annual fundraising to balance their general operating budget.

An annual gift to the Fund for Montessori Excellence supports essential programs at RMS. We use the Fund for Montessori Excellence to enhance targeted line items in our operating budget: Montessori materials and the classroom environment, specialty programming, financial aid and professional development. Many donors make gifts in honor of a special student, teacher or loved one who has been a part of our school community.

Reviewing the training helped me feel more confident that what we do at RMS is ideal in developing the child as a whole. This train-ing benefits students because I was able to

develop fresh ideas as well as fine-tune current practices.”

“I participated in the teacher intern program at the Center for Teaching and Learning in

Edgecomb, Maine. The focus of this four-day program was the workshop methodology for teaching reading and writing in 5th through

RMPA Dues

Richmond Montessori School has always possessed and relied upon a strong sense of com-munity. This defining trait is demonstrated through the essential role that volunteers play at school and is conveyed in the way we care for and interact with others.

Every year as part of your child’s enrollment contract, $35 in dues are paid to the Richmond Mon-tessori Parents’ Association. Have you ever asked yourself, “What is this for? How are the dues used? What do I get for $35?”

Well, the answer is, “A lot—on all fronts.”

Dues are used to cover all of the RMPA family and friend-build-ing events. This includes everything from Harvestfest, the Spring Family Picnic, Confer-ence Day child care coverage and other special events. All of these activities are provided free of charge and are designed to build a stronger RMS community.

All members of the Parents’ Association are invited to join us for these activities and take full benefit of your yearly dues. You will have a lot of fun and meet fellow RMS parents.

New Energy on North Campus!Katie Wood, Megan Knight, and our new Spanish teacher, Melanie Ruggieri, have implemented recommendations from the recent re-accreditation pro-cess. They’ve prepared a comfortable and productive environment in which technology is incorporated into cross-disciplinary learning spaces. Within these mixed-aged classrooms, they’ll be well-equipped to manage individual levels of student progress within a full spectrum of subjects. The middle school faculty team is working closely with all of our talented specialty teachers to bring new experiences in art, music, and physical education. The middle school faculty’s enthusiasm captures what’s best about Richmond Montessori School. As an institution, we are moving ever forward by studying the current best practices in education while maintaining a focus on time-tested Montessori philosophy and education of the whole child.

Our Strategic Directions

Our five strategic directions reflect analysis and synthesis of data and information gathered from several sources including the members of our school community and the guidance and recommendations from our 10-year accreditation by the American Montessori Society and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. These strategic directions are meant to provide guidance and inspiration to our school leadership and community as we make decisions and take action that reflect our vision and values.

As part of the Task Force planning process, the Board of Trustees com-pleted a review of our mission, vision and values. The Board charged the Task Force with setting our broad direc-tions and goals that will be developed, piloted, and implemented over time to reflect the needs, timing, resources, and emerging research in education. Our focus is to nurture and support our students on their path to becom-ing creative, resilient, caring, ethical, tolerant and intelligent members of the wider world community.

Step Two of Capital Campaign

our future

As we celebrate the success of Step One of the Unfold Our Future capital campaign, we look with excitement towards Step Two—the addition of a full-size middle school gym. This new space will allow us to gather as an entire school community for athletic events and other school programs.

The Board of Trustees approved Step Two at their May 23, 2012 meeting. The fundraising goal for Step Two is $750,000.

Components of the gym will include:

✳ bleacher seating for 200 people;

✳ a catering kitchen;

✳ boys and girls locker rooms; and

✳ an Athletic Director’s office.
