So, when Our Lady begins this month’s message with her words, “In this time of Grace” she is referring not just to her presence amongst us in Medjugorje, but also to the Liturgical season of Holy Lent. These forty days when we prepare ourselves for the great celebration of Easter. During this Lenten season Our Lady wants to see our “Faces transformed in Prayer.” Her presence with the Church at this time is one of accompanying us on our pilgrimage of Faith so that we become her witnesses in reflecting the glory of God. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. And, all of us with our unveiled faces are like mirrors reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the image that we reflect in brighter and brighter glory.” (2; Cor: 18) Lent is a time of grace, a time of transformation. The Lord wants to be glorified in his people. “Dear Children, in this time of Grace.”

2

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Medjugorje North East and beyond, the expression ‘Lent’ originally comes from the Latin ‘Quadragesima’ - ‘Forty Days.’ In the Bible the number forty has a special significance. It is a time during which, through trials and difficulties, we come to a deeper Faith and Trust in God. For forty days it rained in Genesis seven, in the time of Noah and the great flood. For forty days and forty nights, Moses was fasting before he received the ten commandments in Exodus: 24. For forty years the people of Israel wandered in the desert. Exodus:10 For forty days Jesus fasted in the desert. For forty days after his Resurrection Jesus remained with his disciples until his Ascension. Our Lady has been with us in Medjugorje almost forty years next year in June.

Reflection by Fr. Martin Morris Spiritual Director of Medjugorje Centre NE

OUR LADY’S MESSAGE—To the World Given 25th February 2020 to Marija Pavlovic

“ Dear children! In this time of grace, I desire to see your faces transformed in prayer. You are so flooded by earthly concerns, you do not even feel that spring is at the threshold. You are called, little children, to penance and prayer. As nature fights in silence for new life, also you are called to open yourselves in prayer to God, in Whom you will find peace and warmth of the spring sun in your hearts. Thank you for having responded to my call . ”

Page 4: MONTHLY NEWSLETTER · 2020-03-05 · Exodus:10 For forty days Jesus fasted in the desert. For forty days after his Resurrection Jesus remained with his disciples until his Ascension

“You are so flooded by earthly concerns, so you do not even feel that spring is at the threshold.” Our Lady reminds us of those things that become a distraction and overwhelm our lives and so we fail to see the new life of grace being offered. This is a wake-up call to us believers to respond and attune to the signs of the times. Lent is springtime of the soul, and inner process of God’s new life taking shape. Our Lady is calling us to a new perspective, to see with spiritual sharpness, new sight, the signs of God’s new life being offered. How easy it is to become dulled and sluggish in the receptivity to the Holy Spirit, to that which overwhelms us. Our Lady shows us the way from this situation. “Penance and Prayer.” The way of sacrifice and prayer is our liberation and freedom in the Holy Spirit. The new door which Our Lady opens for us. So, we are invited to decide for Prayer and abandonment to God and offer the sacrifices necessary to make this possible. In this abandonment or surrender to our Heavenly Father, Mary says, we will, “Find peace and warmth of the spring sun in your hearts.” This new spiritual life, this springtime of the soul is at the heart of this time of grace. So, let us treasure these forty days of Lent. Let us have a holy Lent, so our eyes are opened to the new life God is sending us, and we are no longer at the mercy of earthly concerns. Let us heed that we are now at the threshold of a new spring, a new time that Our Lady speaks of, let us pray for the grace of reading the signs of the times.

A Blessed and Holy Lent to you all, Fr. Martin

Our Lady’s message to Mirjana 2nd February 2020

“Dear children, by the act of the decision and love of God, I am chosen to be the Mother of God and your mother. But also by my will and my immeasurable love for the Heavenly Father and my complete trust in Him, my body was the chalice of the God-man. I was in the service of truth, love and salvation, as I am now among you to call you, my children, apostles of my love, to be carriers of truth; to call you to spread His words, the words of salvation, by your will and love for my Son: that with your actions you may show, to all those who have not come to know

my Son, His love. You will find strength in the Eucharist - my Son who feeds you with His Body and strengthens you with His Blood. My children, fold your hands [in prayer] and look at the Cross in silence. In this way, you are drawing faith to be able to transmit it; you are drawing truth to be able to discern; you are drawing love that you may know to love truly. My children, apostles of my love, fold your hands [in prayer], look at the Cross. Only in the Cross is salvation. Thank you ”

Our Lady’s message to Mirjana 2nd March 2020

"Dear children, your pure and sincere love draws my motherly heart. Your faith and trust in the Heavenly Father are fragrant roses which you offer to me - the most beautiful bouquets of roses which consist of your prayers, acts of mercy and of love. Apostles of my love, you who sincerely and with a pure heart strive to follow my Son, you who sincerely love Him, you help; you be an example to those who have not yet come to know the love of my Son - but, my children, not only with words but also with acts and pure feelings through which you glorify the Heavenly Father. Apostles of my love, it is a time of vigilance, and of you I am asking for love, that you not judge - anyone. Because the Heavenly Father will judge everyone. I am asking that you love, that you convey the truth; because truth is old, it is not new, it is eternal, it is truth. It testifies to God's eternity. Bring the light of my Son and keep breaking the darkness which all the more wants to seize you. Do not be afraid. Through the grace and the love of my Son, I am with you. Thank you." .”

REPORT FROM SISTER EMMANUEL of The Community of The Beatitudes www.childrenofmedjugorje.com

cross lived without Jesus can lead to despair. In her personal diary, Bernadette wrote: "Jesus, I do not feel my cross when I look at yours."

How I wish I could say the same thing! Still a long way to go.... Here, Bernadette gives us the best illustration of the word twice repeated by the Blessed Mother in this message above: "Fold your hands in prayer, and look at the cross." For Bernadette, the cross borne in her childhood developed further at the convent of Nevers where she became Sr. Marie Bernard. But she did not become a Saint because of the suffering she endured, even less so because she saw Our Lady. No, she became holy because she kept the gaze of her heart fixed upon Jesus, even in the midst of the storms, which made her suffering extraordinarily fruitful. She became holy because she was able to offer to God all the events of her life, and use them to develop the union of her soul with Christ, according to Mary's school.

Medjugorje, February 13, 2020 Sr. Lúcia of Fatima

Dear Children of Medjugorje, praised be Jesus and Mary! 1. On February 2nd, 2020, Mirjana received her monthly apparition at the Blue Cross. She then conveyed her message: ( see page 4 ) 2. In France, February is the month we celebrate the feast of Lourdes (11 February) and St. Bernadette (18 February). This little girl grew up in poverty, lacking the bare essentials in life. (see PS1) It's enough to know that her little brother would scrape wax from candles in the village church to try to fill his empty stomach. People looked down on this family who lived in a sordid cave that was more like a cell. Once, while questioned, Bernadette heartbreakingly uttered: "She (The Lady) spoke to me like a person." Falsely accused of theft, her father was sent to jail, leaving his wife and children in total poverty. However, the Soubirous family had the greatest of riches: Theirs was a family united in a deep faith, in family prayer that never lost fervour, and for Bernadette, God always came first. The cross planted in her life from childhood onwards, far from bringing her down, strengthened her attachment to Christ whose destiny she shared in many ways. It is true that the cross lived in communion with Jesus can create saints, while the

This union was her immense treasure, her reason for living, her little Heaven hidden from the eyes of others. Seen through the eyes of the world, her fate was in no way enviable, poor and sick as she was, but she would not have changed places with anyone. The Mother of God did not promise her happiness of this world, but rather of the other world. (The other world referred to here does not mean Heaven, rather it's the Kingdom that is hidden and already present behind the veil of our earthly realities). May Bernadette help us live through the trials and anxieties of today, our eyes focused on the one Saviour. It is beautiful that the message of Lourdes begins with the sign of the Cross. Following Mary's example, Bernadette made the sign of the cross so solemnly that all who saw her do it were deeply touched. 3. She has the cure for us. Mary's exhortation to keep our eyes locked on the cross is not unrelated to the wave of distress caused by the coronavirus that has taken over China and surrounding areas in recent weeks. Our Blessed Mother always provides the cure before we develop the disease. Keeping our eyes glued to the cross is a source of healing, peace and light. From His open heart, Jesus offers us salvation. Recently, Our Lady told us: "Trials will come... If you are mine, you will win, for your refuge will be the Heart of my Son Jesus." Our Mother did not hide from us the difficulties that are to come. Even nature is in rebellion against man. The story in Exodus of the Hebrews in the desert helps us to position

ourselves correctly in respect of God. The Hebrew people had turned away from the Living God who had saved them from slavery, and shifted toward false gods, the idols of the time. But God loves His people so much that He did not want them to lose the treasure of true faith and become perverted. He allowed snakes to appear that had a fatal bite. That is when Moses intervened, placing a bronze snake on a mast, and all who looked at it were healed. This image foreshadows the cross of Christ and the salvation offered to men by Jesus when he was nailed to the wood of the cross. "Those who look to Him are radiant" (Psalms 34:5). Let us remember this statement made by so many saints: When we contemplate the wounds of Christ, our own wounds are healed; but when we look at our own wounds, we sink... "By his wounds we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5)

Some countries have decided to eliminate Christ from their borders. They have banned the cross, Christian education is severely sanctioned, believers are persecuted, etc. But what can become of a nation without the Savior? "The world without Jesus has no future," Mary tells us. Jesus, in His humility, does not force any doors that are closed to Him, He

7

respects our freedom and pulls away. But then, who comes to fill this void? History shows us that man without God, left to himself and to his own strength, cannot go far. He invents a false salvation and seeks happiness in places where it gets lost. He goes so far as to lose simple human common sense by even trampling natural law. We are entitled to interpret this kind of event, the appearance of a virus, as a warning, not in fear, but for the purpose of awakening our conscience and to fall to our knees. Whether the virus spreads or not, it is essential to ask for the grace to know how to discern the signs of our time, and to pray unceasingly. Less commentaries and more prayer. Beware! God does not send an epidemic or a tsunami. God is innocent of evil. We cannot by any measure make him responsible for evil. But if God is not invited to remain with His people, if man believes he can live without Him, then God withdraws, and with Him the protection He wanted to give to those people. Then, in His burning desire to save man, He allows the enemy to do as he wills. Then all kinds of troubles appear, and man ends up crying out to his Savior. God alone can turn evil into good, and turn a terrible ordeal into a blessing. Today, the weight of suffering is indeed a heavy burden, but when our suffering is united with Christ, it becomes fruitful and redemptive. For this reason, Mary still gives us the key, namely her Son Himself. "In the cross alone is salvation." Early Christians recognized this: "There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved." (Acts 4:12)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, the ball is in our court. May today be the day when we begin, or start again, to turn to God and live His Word. The course that history takes and much of what will happen depends on us. We cannot imagine the power of even the simplest of prayers and the least of our little sacrifices offered to God. Heaven will always thank us for the slightest step we take to protect life, to help our brothers in distress and value our own life. 4. Our 30-day prayer to St Joseph. On February 17 begins our appeal to the tender heart of St. Joseph. Each year, our household prays to St Joseph for 30 consecutive days, during which we live in his company, imploring him for all our needs. Don't hesitate to join us in honoring the one who was chosen by God to be the spouse of Blessed Virgin Mary and whom the Child Jesus called "Daddy". His litanies teach us about who he is and what he does, blending gentleness and power. Let us pray to him together until his feast day on March 19, and let us ask him for a sign of his goodness. Here is a beautiful 30 day prayer to him: go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3mn8A_qVd8

Sister Lúcia of Fatima writes: "If we do not renounce the path of sin, hatred, revenge that violates the rights of the human person, immorality and violence, etc. let us not say that it is God who punishes us in this way. evening Eucharistic adoration in the large parish church without a square metre free filled with kneeling faithful. “I believe” that “in Medjugorje there is grace. There is no denying it. There are people who convert,” said the Pope in 2013 in dialogue with Father Alexandre Awi Mello, a Mariologist and now Secretary of the Department for the Laity, the Family and Life. In

that interview, transformed into a book (It’s My Mother. Meetings with Mary, Città Nuova editions), Pope Francis certainly warned against the protagonism of the visionaries and the multiplication of messages and secrets, but without ever disregarding the positive fruits of the experience of pilgrimages. In the preface to that book, the

Argentine theologian Carlos María Galli wrote: “For Francis the most important thing is the Marian faith of the “holy people faithful to God”, which teaches us to love Mary beyond theological reflection. As a son and member, like any other, of the People of God, Bergoglio - Francis - participates in the sensus fidei fidelium and identifies himself with the profound Marian piety of the Christian people”. It is precisely for this reason that, by continuing to study the phenomenon of Medjugorje and without there being a pronouncement on the authenticity of the apparitions, the Pope intended to acknowledge those

The authorization of pilgrimages

The authorization of pilgrimages is a sign of recognition of the good that happens in the parish shrine, where many people come closer to the sacraments Vatican City - Andrea Tornielli In order to understand the reasons and the profound meaning of Pope Francis’ decision to authorize pilgrimages to Medjugorje, it is useful to re-read some passages of the apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, the document that traces the course of his pontificate. In that text, the Pope recalled that “in popular piety one can grasp the way in which the faith received has incarnated itself in a culture and continues to be transmitted”. He also recalled, citing the words of the final document of the Conference of Latin American Bishops in Aparecida, that “walking together towards sanctuaries and participating in other manifestations of popular piety, bringing with one another children or inviting others, is in itself an act of evangelization”. “Let us not coerce or pretend to control this missionary force,” concluded the Pontiff. It is a fact that millions of pilgrims in recent years have had a significant experience of faith on their way to Medjugorje: this is attested to by the long lines at confessionals and the

Medjugorje findings from Vatican commission Reported previously( useful to read)

who face the hardships of the journey to go and pray in that place. For this reason he wanted his own permanent envoy, a bishop from the Holy See, who was in charge of the pastoral care of the pilgrims. And for this reason he now decides to go beyond what was declared more than twenty years ago by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which allowed pilgrimages to Medjugorje but only “in a private way”. Now, instead, dioceses and parishes will be able to organize and guide those pilgrimages which are an expression of the Marian piety of the people of God. Vatican News Service, May 13, 2019

The Commission also stated that the young visionaries were mentally healthy and that they were surprised by what had happened to them and were not influenced by the local Franciscans or anyone else. Also, regardless of the fact that the police questioned them, they did not change their testimony, even under threat of death. The Commission also reportedly rejected the thesis about demonic origins of the apparition, writes Tornielli. Tornielli writes that the Commission concluded and proposed to the Pope to lift the ban on organised pilgrimages to Medjugorje since priests cannot organise pilgrimages to Medjugorje but can only be part of spiritual accompaniment. Also, the Commission has proposed that the Medjugorje parish should be under the direct supervision of the Holy See and become a so-called pontifical sanctuary. “This decision is based on pastoral reasons and concern for millions of pilgrims, but also on the transparency related to economic issues. That would not mean the recognition of the supernatural nature of the apparitions,” says Tornielli. The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, led by Cardinal Gerhard Müller, who is opposed to the Medjugorje phenomenon, expressed doubts about Ruini's report. Pope Francis decided then to appoint a special envoy to Medjugorje, the Archbishop of Warsaw-Krakow Henryk Hoser, to propose pastoral initiatives for the future. Hoser, now has an excellent insight into the situation. www.total-croatia-news.com

The first seven apparitions

The first seven apparitions of the Virgin Mary to children in Medjugorje are apparently authentic. The news was reported by renowned Italian journalist and Vaticanist Andrea Tornielli on his Vatican Insider blog, reports Večernji List on May 17, 2017. Tornielli, known for having good sources in the Vatican, reportedly gained insight into the results of the Commission for Medjugorje led by Cardinal Camillo Ruini. The Commission was established by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. According to Tornielli, the Commission gave a positive opinion of the authenticity of the first apparitions between 24 June and 3 July 1981. Reportedly, 13 members of the Commission supported the recognition of supernatural apparitions during that period, one member was opposed, and one abstained from voting.

place to invoke Mary with the title of Queen of Peace and God's Divine Mercy. We have invoked her, called upon her for centuries. And we still call upon her as Mother of Mercy. But her faithful, centuries' long intercession for us, transformed her into the Queen to whom God's Mercy gladly hears prayers and fulfils the tiniest desire of hers for the benefit of her children. OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE AND DIVINE MERCY On New Year's Eve, in St. James Church in Medjugorje a remarkable homily was given by the Apostolic Nuncio of Bosnia and Hercegovina, Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto. It contained a call to understand Our Lady as not only the Queen of Peace, but as Queen of Divine Mercy. This homily has brought much hope and joy to Our Lady's children. Indeed, it is an amazing grace for us. I want to share the concluding words of Archbishop Pezzuto, as he declares something we all knew in our hearts but rejoice to hear with our ears. (I hope to have the full transcription soon.) Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, Apostolic Nuncio of Bosnia and Hercegovina, concluded his December 31st, 2019 homily in St. James Church at Midnight Mass of the Solemnity of Mary the Holy Mother of God: "How can Mary be the Queen of Peace without being at the same time, Queen of Divine Mercy? We are here in the temple of the Queen of Peace raised in Bosnia and Hercegovina. Mary is the Queen of Peace because she is the Queen of God's Mercy, whose face is Jesus. Just as at the wedding in Cana, today, as well, Mary continues to turn to God's Mercy, saying, "They have run out of wine." And this, the wine of Mercy, has descended and entered [human history] by way of the royal petition of the one who carried Him in her body, in a way predicting at Cana His revelation in human history. "So, it would be right and just, in this

Cheeseburn Grange Stamfordham, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE18 OPT

Cheeseburn Grange has a rich and diverse history. It was originally the Grange, or farm, of the Augustinian Priory in Hexham. It had been granted to the Priory by John de Normanville in 1297. Cheeseburn has a rich Catholic heritage and has been occupied by Catholic families from its inception. At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, Cheeseburn Grange came into the possession of the Crown and was leased to Gawen Swinburne. It passed to his widow, Margaret Lawson and then to her daughter who married Lewis Widdrington. Their son Thomas inherited the freehold in 1631. Upon his death in 1664 his brother Henry inherited. It remained in the Widdrington family until 1752, when Ralph Widdrington died without issue and Cheeseburn was passed to the Riddell family, where Simon and Joanna now live with their children. 1939 During the Second World War the house was occupied by St. Vincent’s Orphanage. The chapel of St Francis Xavier, designed by John Dobson, was built in 1820. Above the altar there is a large oil painting “The Descent of Our Saviour from the Cross”, painted in 1824 by the Flemish artist J.S. Verillin. It is a copy of the central panel of Rubens’ triptych which lies in Antwerp Cathedral. The chapel was later remodelled by Joseph Hansom in 1860 and the present altar built.
