Monthly Focus: Social Media Safety by Morgan Schmidt, SAVE Event Planning Intern SAVE recognizes that students are using social media now more than ever. With approximately 81% of teens ages 12-17 using social networks, it is important that SAVE members as well as the community know how to practice safe internet use and how to prevent cyber bullying. SAVE encourages members to follow a few tips on internet and social media safety: Never post personal information such as your cell phone number or home address. Never respond to mean or rude texts, messages, e-mails, or comments on social networks. Don’t agree to meet an online friend without your guardian’s permission. SAVE recognizes that students are using social media now more than ever. With approximately 81% of teens ages 12-17 using social networks, it is important that SAVE members as well as the community know how to practice safe internet use and how to prevent cyber bullying. SAVE encourages members to follow a few tips on internet and social media safety:

• Never post personal information such as your cell phone number or home address.

• Never respond to mean or rude texts, messages, e-mails, or comments on social networks.

• Don’t agree to meet an online friend without your guardian’s permission.

• If you wouldn’t say it to another person’s face, don’t text or post it online!

As SAVE members, not only is it important to practice safe internet use but it is also crucial that you are encouraging your peers to do the same. If you are witness or victim to cyber bullying, report it to a guardian, teacher, guidance counselor, or a trusted adult. Officer Daisy’s Do’s & Don’ts for a Cyber-Safe Summerby Officer Daisy McCarroll, SAVE Advisor of the Year

As you take advantage of the warm weather this summer, remember there are people who want to take advantage of you and your information. The majority of you will be on social media sites more in the summer than during the school year. Social media sites are a great way to stay connected with others, but you should be wary about how much personal information you post. Keep personal information personal. Be cautious about how much personal information you provide on your social media sites. The more information you post, the easier it may be for someone to steal your identity, access your data, or stalk you. Manage and know your friends. Only accept friend requests from people you know and trust. Doing this will protect you from spammers, pedophiles, and other people who want to use your information to commit crimes. Social media sites

make it easy to pretend to be someone else. Anyone can take control of a user’s account if he or she can obtain the user’s password. One of the favorite features for teens is posting and sharing photos. The internet makes it easy to obtain photos and use the images in a way a person may choose. Posting photos that may be deemed as fun, cute, or sexy, can end up where one least expects it. People can use photo editing tools to manipulate online images for good or bad purposes. The most dangerous feature provided by social media sites is location based services. While it can be fun to share your location with friends and family, it can also increase your vulnerability. People can use this tool to track your movements and determine when you are alone or not at home. Have a wonderful summer and stay safe!

SAVE Question of the Month Please share the SAVE Question of the Month with your SAVE members. This a place to ask questions and get responses from SAVE members across the country.

“Since many schools are out for the summer, students will be on the Internet and social media more

frequently. How can you protect yourself from a Cyberbully?”

Please blog your responses to: http://nationalsave.org/qom-june/

SAVE Chapter Highlight: Robeson County SAVEby Morgan Schmidt, SAVE Event Planning Intern

The SAVE chapters at Lumberton Sr. High School, Purnell Swett High School, and Fairmont High School have been especially successful this year in promoting youth safety and preventing youth violence. Each of these schools received Allstate Mini Grants to help with their SAVE Chapter Activities and Teen Safe Driving efforts. Over 3,000 teens have heard the safe driving message through activities and programs hosted by these amazing SAVE chapters! According to Ashley Spence, the SAVE coordinator for the three chapters, Lumberton Sr. High School, Purnell Swett High School, and Fairmont High School have completed several activities and programs throughout the year in order to make a difference in their school and community in regards to youth safety.

All three Robeson Country SAVE chapters participated in Allstate’s “X the TXT” movement in which students attended presentations on the importance of teen safe driving and pledged not to text and drive. Additionally, each school participated in Red Ribbon Week. Students in the high schools participated all week in various activities sponsored by the school SAVE club to promote anti-drug use. During the week of October 20-24 Fairmont High School took part in America’s Safe School Week. In conjunction with the local police department, SAVE members hosted a teen drinking and driving stimulation activity through the use of golf carts and vision impaired goggles. Lumberton Sr. High School’s SAVE chapter promotedBullying andRelationViolence Prevention by distributing over 450 fireball candieswithanti-violence messages attached. SAVE members at Purnell Swett High School participated in World Kindness Day.
