Hello Accordionists:A beautiful Springtime is

here for us in sunny South-ern California. ALSI and neighboring accordion clubs have all had many wonderful meetings, play-outs and visiting accordion-ists performances.

Where are you, the players in San Diego coun-ty and the surrounding 50 miles radius? We need you! For the accordion clubs to grow and be inter-esting for all of us, we need new players and listeners. This is essential.

Comments have come back to me that “I will not come to a meeting when there is a music work-shop”. I am sorry some feel this way. You see, I

feel we can all continue learning more about eve-rything around us in life, especially the accordion and its music. Those wishing to hear only music may choose to arrive at the ALSI meeting at Con-cert/Showcase time. That was an easy solution. (The time is usually fol-lowing the refreshment/social/intermission at 2:00 to 2:30 pm.)

Many ALSI friends come only infrequently to meetings. I would like to see you all more often. How about bringing your instrument and playing a solo or duet? With enough interest there could even be “Jam Ses-sions” at the end portion of meetings. By partici-pating in a club event your musicianship will improve and the confidence to play a solo or in groups with other players will be in-creased. HAPPINESS at ALSIby Sharon Marotte

April 14, 2013 was a cool, cloudy day for our ALSI meeting in Bailey Hall – tables were set up inside for our break time – it was too cool to eat outside. Players around the vil-lage: Cafeteria – Steve Halpern, Crider #2 –Kari Andrews, Brandel – Linda Hibbert. Bill Barr was the MC for the day. Carlos Menesesplayed the piano for early arrivals.

The Open Mike section of the day was short because of Gordon’s workshop which started at 1:30. Our players for the day were: -Juergen Rosenfeld played first – His

songs were: German waltz - Lorcher Gel-aute & Lorcher Wein, & Blame it on the Bossa Nova. The first song was dedicated to Sharon Marotte – Juergen was given the sheet music to learn to sing & play when he returns to Germany – Sharon played it on a CD for him to learn the music. Good job Juergen!!

-Al Jacobs was our second strolling/stand up musician. His songs were: La Cumparsita, tango – Besame Mucho, rhumba – Tea for Two, cha cha. It is al-ways good to hear Al play.

-The ALSI Ensemble played several songs directed by Vicki Eriqat. The songs were: April Showers, Blue Tango, Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White, Un-der Paris Skies, & Bionda. The players were: Gordon Kohl, Steve Halpern,Erika Baier, Sharon Marotte, Kari An-drews, & Bob Page. Joining the Ensem-ble were Lois Lahoud on percussion and Ed Ducharme on drums.During our refreshment break Russell

Camp played several songs for us and Juergen Rosenfeld also strolled around and played several songs.

I want to give a special THANK YOU to Oscar Worm from Bekker’s Catering for fur-nishing cupcakes for the day – they were won-derful!! —

SHOWCASE REVIEW

GORDON KOHL SHOWCASE

APRIL 22, 2013

by Bob Warner

We were very glad to have GORDON KOHL as our showcase performer again. His programs are always an auditory and visual delight. He combines the best there is in a professional accordionist – su-perb technique, great arrangements, all augmented by a quality instrument, a digital electronic accordi-on, the CONCERTO.

Gordon’s programs are always organized around his CONCERTO. I’ll say what I’ve said before about this accordion; it is a well designed, refined instru-ment with standard accordion reeds but also com-bined with an external elec-tronic sound module that en-ables the player to imitatemany band instruments and a multiplicity of tone variations.

Gordon was initially joined by his drummer during the first half of the program.During the second half, he brought in his inimitable sax player, Bob Marstellar.Gordon’s performance today took us on a musical trip through the decades. He provided anecdotal information on the music as went along. Adding drums and sax to the accordion (CONCERTO) cre-ates a big sound that “pushes” the music.

He began with a Kleszmer tune of Yugoslav origin. It had the typical construction of a circle dance, very fast and often in a minor key. Next, a popular ballad from the sixties, written by Carol King (but I didn’t catch the title), was played in a slow swing tempo with many register changes for interest. “THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA”, an im-mensely popular piece written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, provided a great Latin vehicle for all musi-cians including the accordion. Gordon used organ, full orchestra, guitar and accordion registers to good effect. He applied a full range of ornamentals to the arrangement. Going on with Italian music we heard an energetic Tarantella followed by theme

music from “THE GODFATHER”, and then, “O SO-LO MIO”.

Passing on to ballads again, we heard “CAN’T SMILE WITHOUT YOU” in a medium swing tempo using piano, sax and clarinet registers. This was a nice dance number. “ARTHUR’S DAY” took us back to the days of Burt Bachrach wherein Gordon’s arrange-ment was richly embellished with various instrument registers. “MISTY”, one of my favorite ballads, was played in a smooth dance tempo with the CON-CERTO’s orchestral effects fully engaged. His arrange-ment of “SPANISH EYES” was played with a Latin beat using some truly original tone registers along with a very interesting repeating bass phrase. A medley of familiar ballads followed. When it comes to sounding good, tempo, accuracy and bellows control is every-thing.

A very danceable “BOOGIE” got our feet tapping bigtime with Bob Marstellar on sax joining the combo. A fifties ballad, “MY SPE-CIAL ANGEL” had everyone mentally swaying on the dance floor. A Rogers and Hammer-stein piece, “SOME ENCHANT-ED EVENING” was truly en-chanting. The combo continued

with a succession of dance pieces such as ‘PEOPLE WILL SAY WE ARE IN LOVE”, “LA VIEN ROSE”, “PETITE WALTZ” (a super arrangement), “YOU ARE NOT ALONE”, some familiar Strauss waltzes like ”VIENNA CITY OF MY DREAMS”, “BLUE DANUBE”, “ARTIST’S LIFE”, “MOZARTS BEEN AROUND”, “THOSE WERE THE DAYS”, Sinatra’s “ALL THE WAY”, ‘POLKA TRAIN TO LAS VEGAS”, a Gordon Kohl composition, “BEER BARREL POLKA”, “TANGO OF THE ROSES”, “POR UNA CABEZA” and finishing with a superb jazz rendition of Duke El-lington’s “SATIN DOLL”. An encore, “MY WAY”, completed a really great afternoon tour of generations of music. A touching performance of ‘AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL” said goodbye from the group.

It’s always our pleasure to hear Gordon who is also doing an admirable job as president of ALSI. His command of the instrument is impressive and inspira-tional. We will be looking forward to his next show-case. —

Thank you to Gordon Kohl for his fine work-shop, concert and donation of ice cream for re-freshment time.

Diane Polinski once again donated some yum-my chocolates. Those cupcakes that Oscar Wornbaked from his catering business, Bekkers, were beautiful and delicious. The presentation was de-lightful too.

Our set-up and clean-up committee were com-posed of Sharon Marotte, Oscar Worn, and Lois Lahoud.

Our tried and true sound man, Jack Marotte, did his usual good job.

Thanks to all of you that made monetary dona-tions to the club. It is deeply appreciated. Untill the first Sunday in May, have a blessed time. —
