Geneseo attorney admitted to practice in Supreme Court By Ben Beagle, Livingston County News, January 29, 2020 A Geneseo attorney has been admitted to practice at the U.S. Supreme Court. Stephen M. Kelley’s recognition came more than 100 years after his grandfather, Charles F. Kelley Sr., was admitted to argue cases in front of the nation’s highest court. “I am keenly aware of the critical role that the Supreme Court has in this country,” Kelley said. “In today’s world, I can live in Geneseo and also take part in a much larger landscape. I welcome the challenge.” Stephen Kelley was admitted Nov. 18, 2019, along with 125 other attorneys from around the coun-

try.

“As they read your name, you stood up right in front of the entire current Supreme Court – seated by seniority with new members on either end,” said Kelley. “It was unforgettable.” Kelley’s grandfather, Charles F. Kelley Sr., was a well-known Manhattan attorney who specialized in maritime law. The elder Kelley was admitted in 1917. Stephen Kelley’s grandfather’s certificate of admission to practice before the Supreme Court hangs in Kelley’s home. Stephen Kelley said he applied for admission for two reasons – to be able to argue before the court should an area case advance that far, and as a way to honor his grandfather. To qualify for admission to the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court, attorneys must have been admitted to practice in the highest court of the state, or the District of Columbia for a period of at least three years before the date of application. A background check is also performed that no adverse discipli-nary action has been pronounced or in effect during the previous three years. Stephen Kelley is a member of both the New York and District of Columbia Bar associations.
