Since I know very little about car mechanisms and how to preserve the cars running abilities, I can only write about my daily experiences and perhaps the history of some of the places we choose to visit as a club. Our Vice-president, Don Colman, offered to write an article every other month to replace mine. I believe he has an article in this newsletter to replace mine. But for those of you that didn’t know of this situation, I’m adding this small preface to keep you informed. We have selected some drives and events for the coming year which should be enjoyable for all of us. My assignment was the May 31-June 3 trip to the South. I tentatively planned the itinerary as: Driving through Grand Junction, Colorado, and onto Ouray for the first night; then on through Silverton; Durango; and for those interested up to Mesa Verde; and the second night in Cortez; then through Moab and onto Green River, Utah for the third night; and then home to Salt Lake/Sandy/Park City. Please let me know if this interests you and I will proceed to set aside blocks of rooms for reservations. We are open to more for those who want to take the lead. I will now turn this over to Don Colman; I will see you all at the Valentine’s Dinner on the 12th of February at the Cinegrill. There have been a good number of questions regarding fuel and additives for our antique autos. Many different ideas have been espoused. The problem is that older engines were not made for the ethanol that is now part of every fill-up. It seems that many people recommend “Marine Formula Sta-Bil Ethanol Treatment & Fuel Stabilizer”. For summer driving, keep in mind that higher octane gas has a higher boiling point than lower octane, so if you have had a vapor lock problem as I’ve had in the past, this may help. Editor’s remarks

January is over and it is time to really get the cars ready for the great events that have been planned. Even if your car is not ready, at least you can get ready and join in the fun and fellowship that can be had with the Bonneville Austin Healey Club, Christmas 2012 marked the third time in 35 years that I didn’t take a Christmas drive in a Healey. Plans were to drive the BJ that day but, after sitting unused for an extended time AND the effects of Ethanol in the fuel caused major leaks in the carburetors. The leaks have been fixed and I will just have to make up the drive some other way. Our condolences go out to the Strassers for the passing of Dil’s father. Those who have watched the video by Keith Mott on you tube,(see link on our website), or were at the planning meeting when we discussed doing a large group of Healeys on a video this year, Keith’s camera man, Jason , has injured his back. Keith would like to do the video this coming October with the scheduled Logan Canyon drive. Elsewhere in this newsletter are the particulars on the Sun Valley trip for the early part of July. I hope that many of you will be going on the trip. Since many of us are no longer employed at full time work, we thought that a weekday trip would be a fun way to avoid the usual traffic. And for you who are still employed we are getting the details out early in the year so you can schedule time off from work to come have some fun with the club. Happy Healeying, Dave

My, How time flies when you’re having fun!

My first encounter with the British Automotive

Industry was around 1963. I had the opportunity to

buy my first car. So off I went looking, my eyes

settled on a choice of either a Austin Healey Sprite

or a Triumph TR-2.

Well after long thought the TR won out and I was

the proud owner of my first car. I had it painted a

canary yellow, and had an absolute blast, even

though it was a mechanical nightmare. Fran drove it

all over and was quite good with the standard

transmission.

Finally it died and I had to give it up because of

repair cost. I wound up buying a 1948 Austin 2-door

coupe. The top speed of this car was 32 miles per

hour in fourth gear with the gas pedal to the floor. I

traded it a year later for a 1956 Ford.

It wasn't for many years later, like in the 1980's, that

my wish for another British car came about. I

purchased a 1961 Austin Healey Sprite {Bugeye}.

Brought it home on a trailer and all the neighbors

wondered how much the people paid me to take it

away. It was an absolute project car, lots of rust, no

interior, and the engine was sitting in the passenger

compartment.

Oh, how we dream of things to come

This is when I found out who Victoria British and

many other parts company's were! I went through all

of their catalogs from front to back and started

ordering all the parts I would need.

From the time I started the restoration work on the

Bugeye it took me one year to complete. It came out

fantastic and it brought out the monster in me.

Dreams do come true, the Sprite with Gerry Coker

My second restoration car was a 1966 Austin Mini

Cooper S. It came in several boxes of mixed parts.

There were three different engines completely taken

apart and mixed parts from different British cars.

Again from start to finish it also took a year and it

came out fantastic!!

The finished Mini at British Field Day

It was a couple of years later that I found my third

British dream car! Dream car-British?? It was a 1961

Morris Minor 1000, it's the British version of a

woody wagon. With the help of the great master,

Dave Maxwell, we started on the adventure of

restoring this car. Again it took approximately

another year and again it came out fantastic.

The Morris at the Gateway Museum

A year or two later a friend and I went to Las Vegas

for the vintage auto races met my brother there and

went to the races. After the races were over my

brother said that he wanted to show me a British car.

It turned out to be a 1967 Triumph Herald Sport 6.

It's so ugly that it's cute. The car was purchased and

it came home to Salt Lake. Again with the teachings

and lots of patience and the knowledge, skills, and

artful knowhow the car came together. Despite my

help and hindering Dave and I, as we all know it was

mostly Dave, got the car restored to a great looking

black car with a red interior with a white convertible

top. I now have four of the neatest, most beautiful

looking British cars a person could have. My most

favorite of the four cars is the Austin Healey Sprite

{Bugeye}, everyone else loves the Mini Cooper S.

The Triumph Sport Six

I am ever so lucky to have the friendship and help of

Dave Maxwell. Without Dave and his knowledge

and skills I wouldn't have these cars. I learned so

much working side by side with him and have gained

some knowledge and wisdom from him.

THANKS DAVE

Fran and I have had many fun times with these cars.

Sometimes it was really hard to pick which car was

going to be driven that day. We have met a lot of

new friends and enjoyed their company. We fondly

remember the trip we took with the club to Colorado.

Spending the night at the motel, going to dinner, then

the next day going through the car museum, and the

drive home the next day.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!!

SUN VALLEY TRIP

June 30 – July 3

Current plans for the trip are to leave Sunday morning around but, no later than 8:30 A.M. From the Salt Lake area we will travel to Logan UT and follow US-91 to Virginia ID. Then we will travel I-15 to Pocatello and have a lunch break.

We then will continue on I-15 to Blackfoot and turn onto US-26 until Arco. Turning then onto ID-20 to the Craters of the Moon National Monument. Time permitting we may take a break at the monument for some sightseeing. Our next road of travel will be ID-75 through Hailey and into Ketchum.

I have reserved rooms at the Tamarack Inn in Ketchum. The rate including taxes for the 3 nights is $445.00. The rooms are either King non-smoking, or two Queens also non-smoking. The Hotel is within walking distance to downtown and all that Ketchum offers.

Monday and Tuesday we can explore the countryside in our Healeys. Returning to home on Wednesday, I plan on the straight line method, south to I-84, onto I-15 and home.

Contact Dave Maxwell for the number to confirm your reservation at the hotel.
