There have been many engagements in the past year, yet many challenges still face singles in our community. In anticipation of the event, we will like to share some pointers for parents to keep in mind when their chil- dren begin dating. Parents should lower their expec- tations and be more realistic when it comes to their kids dating. Keep an open mind and don’t reject any- one based on observance or status differences. When your kids approach you about a potential partner, be careful how you speak about him or her. Even facial expressions can affect your child’s decision. Teach your kids to look for important things in a partner, such as good values, a najib personality, someone who is going to be a good wife/husband and a good parent. Not superficial things, such as looks and wealth. PASSOVER RICE INFORMATION 2017 CHAMETZ FOR CHARITY As per phone conversations with rice importers, Rab- bi Eliyahu Ben Haiim has confirmed that the following brands of rice are 100% pure, no additives, preserva- tives, or vitamins. Therefore, they are suitable for use for Passover. The following brands are: Colbeh, Royal, Pari, Deer, Zebra, Empire, Lal Qilla, Dunar, and Ko- hinoor. Brown Rices have not been checked. Please avoid using any enriched rice. Even though all these rice are pure, Jewish law requires that the rice be cleaned three times and washed thoroughly before use for Passover. Ohr Esther Synagogue is collecting unused, unopened, non-perishable food for Island Harvest, a local food pantry serving thousands of poor families on Long Island. The collection will continue through Sunday, April 2nd. The drop off point will be Ohr Esther Syna- gogue (130 Steamboat Road). Sisterhood updates a list of 6th-8th graders every school year. This list becomes very useful when planning a Bar or Bat Mitzvah party. We would advise anyone having a party to please make an

effort to invite all the boys and girls in their grade to avoid any child from being left out. Please contact any Sisterhood Member or email [email protected] to be sent the list and to make sure your child’s name is included.

Dr. Leah Hakimian currently researches the question: How do Jewish couples meet and marry? In the 90’s she founded two nonprofit Jewish matchmaking programs, and continues to champion the role of com-munity in helping singles meet. She writes on a volunteer basis to inspire her readers and to encourage them to keep their “antennae up.” She resides in Jerusalem and Great Neck, New York. HaChodesh now has the privelege of sharing her stories with you.

Samantha Natalie Wolf, 26, and Adrian Kirrin Cohn, 29, are both believers in Tikkun Olam, repair-ing the world. And they practice what they preach. The two New Yorkers met when they were helping to rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

In the spring of 2013, Samantha brought a group of high schoolers to New Orleans for six weeks to volunteer for a non-profit program whose mission is to shrink the time between disaster and full recovery. Adrian was then a manager of this program, SBP (formerly, the St. Bernard Project). He recalls: “I noticed Samantha almost immediately at the orien-tation.” Samantha smiles. “I too felt an instant connection.”

On their first date, Adrian brought along his dog, Fitz. He explains: “It relieves the pressure of a first date.” And it was crucial for Adrian to find out how a potential partner felt about dogs. He learned that Samantha had grown up with two canines and loved them as much as he did. Soon, Adrian had two best friends – Samantha and Fitz.

When Samantha’s program ended in April, she returned to New York to look for a job and an apartment. At the same time, Adrian “coincidentally” was visiting his parents in Manhattan and invited Samantha to join them for dinner. She reciprocated and Adrian met Samantha’s family in Port Washington, New York. There was a pivotal moment in their conversation when Adrian asked, “So, are you coming back to New Orleans?”

Adrian’s family goes back to Louisiana for seven generations and he was thrilled when Samantha booked a one-way ticket to New Orleans. They loved the life in New Orleans, including their friends, the music and the food. Still, they decided to move back to New York in 2015 for new job opportunities. “We also missed our parents,” adds Samantha.
