If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream-and not make dreams your master; If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!
BOEING & JPL SUMMER INTERNS
As Bosco Tech’s class of 2016 prepares to graduate, several juniors are gearing up for prestigious summer
internships at the Boeing Company and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The eager students will work under
the mentorship of professional engineers and scientists to gain practical experience in STEM fields.
The juniors headed to Boeing’s El Segundo facility this summer are: (left photo, left to right) Devin Cornair
(MSET), Jacob Lovi (MSET), Matthew Lewis (CSEE), Daniel Martinez (CSEE), Mario Mijangos (MSET),
John Paul Gomez-Reed (CSEE), and Lorenzo Zamora (CSEE).
Meanwhile, juniors
Shant Loussararian
(CSEE) and Frank Lora
(CSEE) (right photo, left
to right) are headed to
Pasadena’s JPL to begin
their summer internships.
Best wishes to each of
these students as they par-
ticipate in these exciting
opportunities!
FROM THE PRESIDENT
This poem, penned by the nineteenth century writer and poet Rudyard Kipling, is one of my favorites. Having studied it as a language arts project in 1974 in the seventh grade, I recall my teacher, Mr. C.E. Taylor, not only introducing the author to us, but analyzing the work, stanza by stanza. As the text was interpreted by the teacher, I recall how he applied Kipling’s intentions of setting out those virtues that were needed by human beings and how much they applied to us in junior high when we were looked upon as the future of the 80’s and the millennium as well. A component of this language arts project, of course, was to memorize the poem. I have; it is one of my favorites and to the Class of 2016, I wish to share it with them as my parting message to this wonderful, vibrant, and faith-filled class. Good luck and God’s speed! Mr. Xavier Jimenez President
YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN ACTION
Bosco Tech students and young graduates are reaching new heights in their scientific exploration and working
to help others. Here are few of the things they have been busy with:
• Freshmen Patrick Jackson and Michael Garcia (right)
took their science fair project, "Transforming Plants,” to
the California State Science and Engineering Fair at Expo-
sition Park’s California Science Center at the end of
May. The duo was invited to participate in this competi-
tion because of their recent third place win at the LA
County Science Fair.
• Frank Lora and Shant Loussararian have submitted
their "Helping Hand" project to the Google Science
Fair. This is a worldwide online science fair sponsored by
Google, open to public participation. Mr. Eric Tom, Instructional Dean for Science, Math & Health, recom-
mended that they enter the fair because of the rigor and complexity of their project.
• Alumnus Aaron Lopez (MS ’08), who taught science in Bosco Tech’s summer program last year, is
currently completing a Fulbright Grant in Puebla, Mexico, which finds him teaching English in a rural
municipality. Aaron earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science at UCLA and a masters' degree in Urban
Education at the University of Pennsylvania with a Bill Gates Millenium Scholarship. After UCLA, Aaron
completed a fellowship program for teaching called “Teach For America,” specializing in math and special
education. He is considering entering to a doctoral program in urban planning when his grant program is
completed next year.

FROM THE SALESIAN DIRECTOR
Dear Bosco Tech Family and Friends,
Recently, we celebrated the feast of Pentecost, which commemorates the descent
of the Holy Spirit with its gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel,
fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. It is fitting that this feast falls near the end of
the academic year because somehow our studies strengthen these gifts, and we can
view our accomplishments in light of them.
This summer is a great time to ponder how these gifts are present in our lives and
work on developing them more fully. One way to do that is to spend time as a fam-
ily—attending community plays or concerts in the park, a Sunday afternoon picnic,
an outing to the beach or a trip to a local park in the mountains. Perhaps the family
could visit an elderly family member and help with the house/yard work while
there.
Whatever you do this summer, do it with family. We can share stories when we meet again in September.
Have a great summer,
Fr. Steven Way, SDB
Salesian Director

JUNIOR HERSON CRUZ EARNS EAGLE SCOUT RANK
You may have noticed the warm welcome sign that greets students and
visitors at the south entrance to the campus. Did you know that sign is
behind one student successfully earning scouting’s highest honor?
The Eagle Scout award, the highest rank in the Boy Scout program, is
bestowed upon scouts who have earned 21 merit badges, demonstrated an
exemplary lifestyle and organized and managed a service project that
benefits the community (like the welcome sign in a previously undesig-
nated area). Only about five percent of Boy Scouts ever achieve the rank
of Eagle.
Congratulations to ACE sophomore Hersonamoreti Cruz who offi-
cially made the rank of Eagle Scout in November and received his award
on March 19. Herson’s award was presented by his scout master and
by Bosco Tech alumnus Mr.
Nick Mosqueda in the
campus’ multi purpose room.
Earlier in the month, Herson attended a dinner at the California
Science Center recognizing new Eagle Scouts from the greater Los
Angeles area. His council sponsor for that event also happened to
be a Tech alumnus.
After graduation next year, Herson would like to attend Arizona
State University to major in civil engineering.
Thanks and congratulations to Herson!
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PARENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT
Hello fellow Bosco Tech families,
I would like to start by saying thank you for the eight wonderful years at Bosco Tech.
I have made so many beautiful friends and met many wonderful parents at the school.
When I first became involved with Parent Council, I asked my sons if it was okay with
them. Their response was “Yes, we like having you around. Plus, you give my friends a
ride home.”
Being involved makes me feel that I'm giving back to the school, the boys, and to the
faculty. I feel like I'm home. Next year, I will be back as an emeritus member and will
be helping with the Parent Council events because I will always consider myself a very
proud parent of Bosco Tech.
Please plan now to get involved in the upcoming Parent Council events:
- Used Book Sale—Saturday, July 9
- Back to School Night—Friday, September 9th
- Freshman Mother’s Luncheon—TBA
- Second Quarterly Presentation—TBA
Have a blessed and safe summer and I look forward to seeing you next year,
Norma Camero

SUMMER SCHOOL WALK-IN REGISTRATION IS JUNE 21-22
Bosco Tech will offer a full roster of academic enrichment and review courses, as well as sports camps, to
boys and girls this summer. Six-week high school courses begin on Monday, June 27, while five-week middle
school courses begin on Tuesday, July 5.
High school students can earn a full year’s course credits over the summer by successfully completing acceler-
ated classes in Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, while students who wish to recover academic credit can
choose from a wide range of offerings. Also offered are enrichment classes such as Android Apps Design and
Beginning and Intermediate Guitar.
Middle school students can enroll in enrichment classes like Fun with Electronics & Computers or build and
program their own robot in our Robotics class. Students can also participate in a hands-on laboratory science
workshop, or attend cheerleading camp. Sports camps will be offered for baseball, basketball, cross country,
football, soccer, and tennis beginning June 27. Both the basketball and
cross country camps are open to students as young as fourth grade.
The deadline for summer school pre-registration is June 10. Walk-in
registration, on a space-available basis will be conducted on Tues.-Wed.,
June 21-22, in the school library from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 to 4
p.m. Prices vary by class level. For further information and for registration
forms and fees for classes or sports camps, visit
www.boscotech.edu/summer-programs.
VARSITY BASEBALL PLAYER VISITS
CHILDRENS HOSPITAL PATIENTS
Three-year varsity baseball player and
junior Anthony Garcia was selected to
represent Bosco Tech when a few
participants in La Salle High School’s
annual Presidents Day “All In” baseball
tournament and fundraiser were selected
to visit Children’s Hospital of Los
Angeles. Anthony was part of the athletic
group that delivered a generous check to
the respected pediatric facility, while
touring the location and meeting young
patients, some of whom are also athletes.
Over the past two years, donations raised
through the 40-school athletic event have
totaled more than $15,000.
All In was started by La Salle Coach Harry Agajanian, our own Coach Eric Agajanian’s father, to help raise
funds for CHLA while teaching students the importance of giving back to the community. Several tournament
games were played on the Bosco Tech campus.
“Our student athletes learned that giving without receiving is a treasured gift,” said the senior Agajanian. “Our
mission is to teach our youth that the greatest joy of living is the joy that comes from giving.”

THE EYE OF THE TIGER—
WINNING DESIGN FOR JUNIOR T-SHIRT ART
Congratulations to Joseph Garcia (IDEA) who won the recent junior
class T-shirt design competition. Joseph’s artistic rendering of the eye of
the Tech Tiger mascot will be replicated on t-shirts for his classmates,
available for purchase in the fall.
“All the design entries were terrific and it was hard to narrow down
the winning design,” said Fr. Steven Way. “ASB officers narrowed
down the entries and then students voted on the winning entry. Joseph’s
design captured the school’s mascot and the focus and drive of the
class.”
PETS ALLOWED—
REPTILES VISIT SCIENCE CLASSES
In his third decade of educating and entertaining
science students, Mr. Brad Stolz, former Tech instructor
and life-long herpetologist, brought his reptile collection
in to the freshmen biology classes. He taught about and
shared specimens of the various classifications of his
cold-blooded friends. Students got an up-close look and a
chance to touch and handle many of the snakes and liz-
ards in his collection.
Honors Biology instructor Mr. Jeff Krynen shared, “I
have been fortunate to assist Mr. Stolz with dozens of
these presentations through the years. Each time, Mr.
Stolz has something new to help build student interest in
these important members of the animal kingdom.”

TECHNOLOGIES COMPETE TO HELP OTHERS
Members of Bosco Tech’s National Honor Society (NHS), are now completing a collection drive for the
international humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse. The non-profit organization is the group for whom
our students annually pack Christmas shoeboxes for its Operation Christmas Child drive. Last fall, driven by
ACE sophomore Grayson Wade’s inspiration, students filled than 831 boxes for children around the world and
an additional $1,000 for postage. Worldwide, more than 125 million boxes have been delivered to date.
This recent NHS-sponsored collection is a competition among technologies, each rivaling to outgive the
others. Large collection boxes were placed inside each technology building and monitored by NHS members. A
different item was featured each week, like hygiene items, stuffed toys and coloring books, and students were
encouraged to contribute a fitting item.
NHS members, under the direction of the group’s Vice President
Grayson and club moderator Mr. A.J. Pimentel, are already planning a
service project to pack these much-needed items in shoeboxes in the
fall. Students in the winning technology will be notified soon and will
receive a well-deserved ice cream party for their generosity.
PLAN AHEAD—EUROPE TRIP 2017 Would your son like to tour Europe next Spring? Mrs. Antonia Elenes will again host a student group that
will travel through the magnificent and memorable sites of ‘the continent.’ Tour stops will include Madrid,
Paris and Rome and such spots as Toledo, Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri.
Interested students or their parents can contact Mrs. Elenes for more information at [email protected] or
(626) 241-8995.
JUNIOR KYLE SHEA RECOGNIZED BY PILOT MUSICIANS
Kudos to CSEE junior Kyle Shea who has been recognized by the Flying Musicians
Association (FMA), a unique group of musical pilots dedicated to their joint passion for
the science and art of aeronautics and music. Kyle, who plays alto saxophone, is a mem-
ber of the Bosco Tech marching, jazz and symphonic bands. He is one of five finalists
nominated for the organization’s FMA Solo Program scholarship. Through the scholarship,
the FMA seeks to encourage and educate young people in their dual pursuits of the fields,
by recognizing music and aviation’s shared skills like precision, multitasking and listening.
Says the FMA, “By educating others about these common attributes, we hope to further
interest in both. The goal is to share our passions in order to inspire, educate, and encourage
others by creating enthusiasm and promoting personal growth through aviation and music.”
Congratulations to Kyle!

INTERNATIONAL CLUB HOSTS MIXER WITH MISSION H.S. —BY MING ZHANG, CSEE JUNIOR
On April 29, the Bosco Tech International Club hosted a mixer for the international students of both Bosco
Tech and San Gabriel Mission High School, our sister school. The event featured various activities and games
led by club Vice President Nguyen Vu and President Jairo Chen. This successfully brought together interna-
tional students of the two different schools to
become friends, and thus to support each other
emotionally and spiritually throughout their
years in high school. This event and its activi-
ties showcased the Salesian oratory precepts of
home, school, church, and playground.
The event's special honorees were Principal
Mr. Jimenez, guest speaker Ms. Carolina
Schmeisser, who is a Bosco Tech Spanish
instructor, International Program Advisor Mrs.
Diaz, Mission High Schools’s advisor, Mrs.
Calderon, guest Miss Valeria De Luna, and
cafeteria chef Mrs. Magda Gonzalez. Each of
these individuals has been critical in the mixer planning.
Mrs. Schmeisser spoke about her experience in the U.S. and how she was
dedicated to studying, even though there were many challenges, and people
who told her she could not do it. She told the students to work hard and not
to give up on their dreams. It can be done! Mrs. Schmeisser is in her final
year of a Ph.D program.
Special thanks to International Club board members, President Jairo
Chen, Vice President Nguyen Vu, Secretary Ming Zhang, Treasurer
Triet Nakayama, and Public Relation Officer Zea Fang, for their hard
work in preparing for the event. All of their meetings with Club Moderator,
Mrs. Diaz made the mixer’s success possible. Thank you to all of our
members who also participated in helping this mixer to begin and end suc-
cessfully. The club members are already excited about hosting a mixer
early next school year.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TAKE AP CHINESE EXAM
—BY MRS. CATHERINE DIAZ, DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ACADEMIC PROGRAM
On May 5, all of our International sophomores, two juniors who enrolled at Bosco only this year, and one
freshman took the AP Chinese exam. Mr. Ronan, the Coordinator of AP Exams, was very detailed and organized
in providing this opportunity to our Chinese students. With the assistance of our IT Coordinator, Mr. Ed Kwong
and proctoring by Mrs. Diaz, the students were confident in
taking the exam. Mr. Kwong and Mrs. Diaz administered a
practice exam a couple of weeks earlier so the boys would be
prepared and comfortable with the technology and content
used in the exam.
Our students knew they would have to read, write, and
speak in their native tongue for this intense exam, and the
majority were very confident and successful at performing
these tasks. Our International students were quite anxious
about their performance, and quite relieved when it was over.
Congratulations to all of our International students who con-
stantly strive to excel!
JUNIOR CLASS RETREAT
—BY ASSISTANT CAMPUS MINISTER BRAD STOLZ
The Junior Retreat held on Friday, May 13, was a
lucky day for the junior class, since it marked the
start of the Class of 2017's movement into position
as Bosco's new senior class. As in a marriage cere-
mony where rings are symbolic of a new, special
relationship, their class rings received at a special
ceremony the evening before the retreat that made
their new status abundantly clear to them.
The major themes of the retreat were those of
taking ownership and responsibility for safekeeping
the oratory environment at Bosco Tech, as they
began taking their place as the new senior class. The
retreat took place at St. Joseph Retreat Center
located next to the school. After a very enjoyable
icebreaker led by alumnus Chris Beltran (who works
at the Center) who showed the students the importance of trusting and depending on one another, three work-
shops were given to accomplish the major themes: "Coming of Age"(both physically and spiritually), explained
by Head Campus Minister Rudy Herrera, "Leadership" by math teacher and head football coach Branden Jones,
and "Reconciliation" (with opportunity for sacramental reconciliation) led by Salesian Vocations Director Fr. Jose
Lucero. Fr. Jose also celebrated the Mass.
All was not entirely workshop and reflection, as after lunch recreation included spirited kickball games. The
closing prayer and activity allowed the juniors to share what they had learned over the previous eight hours. The
reflections were honest and very moving. This Friday the 13th will long be recalled as a very good day for our
new seniors.

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER MR. JUN REYES
Jazz Night Out
As with everything the Bosco Tech Band has accomplished this year, the annual Jazz Night Out concert, held
on April 22, was a success! With the theme of “Music of the Movies,” family, friends, faculty and fellow stu-
dents were treated to a night filled with music and games. This was the music program’s biggest fundraiser of
the year. Special thanks to the Music Booster parents who worked so hard, as they have done all year, to make
this event a truly memorable and successful one.
2016 Spring Concert
Next up was the traditional Spring Concert, held on Tuesday, May 17. It was the music program’s last formal
event of the year, which featured performances by the Music Appreciation class and the award-winning DBTI
Symphonic Band.
In these final weeks of the 2015-2016 school year, Mr. Almanza and the Bosco Tech Music students would
like to thank everyone who supported us during the past year. We organized a string of successful band events
that would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of many parents, sponsors, friends and family. We
know that sending your son to Bosco Tech is already a significant commitment, and many parents managed to
go above and beyond with their support of our program. So THANK YOU for making the school year a memo-
rable one for our music students! Follow us on Facebook (we’re DBTImusic) and we hope you can join us next
year!

TRACK & FIELD FINISHES SEASON AT CIF —BY HEAD COACH STANFORD TUCKER & ASSISTANT COACH BRAD STOLZ
This season’s Bosco Tech Track and Field team overcame
many obstacles and still did very well. Although the team
was very young with only a few seniors, it was amazing
how much they improved. The JV team, for example, won
many medals at the league prelims, and put on a great show.
They even succeeded in becoming the league champions!
We should have a great varsity team next year!
Varsity finished off the regular season by winning many
medals at the league finals. In field events, juniors
Sebastian Rojas and Shant Loussararian finished first and
second in the league in pole vault. Sebastian also qualified
for CIF Prelims. Senior David Casillas made it to CIF in
shot put. In track events, our relay team of senior Hiram
Acosta, juniors Rey Castellanos and Roman Kirkbride, and sophomore Xiaolin (Forest) Yang qualified for
both the 400 meter and 1600 meter relays. Backup relay runners also qualified for CIF: senior Alex Honegger,
juniors Augustine Escalera and Daniel Uballez, and sophomores Joel Martinez, Gabriel Espejel, and Sidney
Herrera. This is more than a third of the team that qualified for CIF!
At the CIF Prelims in Carpinteria, although we did not advance to the finals, our relay team increased their
personal records (PRs) in both relays. The coaching staff consider this year a great season and look forward to
the next.
TENNIS
—BY HEAD COACH RUDY HERRERA
It was an improbable run. The team made it to play offs for the first time in six years. Along the way, they beat
league champs Bishop Montgomery both times they faced them in league competition. Bosco ended up being
the only school to beat the champs this season. At one point, the team had a 7 match win streak and ended the
2016 season in second place, with 7 wins and 3 losses (Bishop Montgomery ended its season 8-2.) Including the
pre-season, our team ended the 2016 season with a 10-5 record.
One player said it best as he reflected on the season, “This was really a ‘team’ win.” There were times when
the players who should have won lost and others, who
were having a harder season, came up with crucial wins.
On the first evening of tennis camp, the players set team
and season goals. They were encouraged to be realistic yet
challenge themselves. One player suggested that at the
season-ending preliminary tournament, we finish third and
make it to play offs. This was a challenging goal, since the
team record last year was 2-8.
As much as we achieved on the court, wining was not
the only thing the team focused on. Internally, qualitative
goals were set. The team’s mission statement set the goals
and expectations, individually and collectively.
In singles competition, which includes two graduating
(continued)
15
seniors, Norris Chen, ended the season with a 26-4 match record, which includes an 18-set winning streak, with
15 of those sets won by a 6-0 or 6-1 score. Norris is the league’s #2 singles player.
Sebastian Lopez, a junior has a 21-1 match record, including an 18-set winning streak, 15 sets were won by a 6
-0 or 6-1 score. Sebastian is the league #1 singles player, beating Norris in the preliminary tournament. Senior
Jonathan Camilleri amassed a 20-2 match record, which includes an 18-set winning streak, 15 sets were won by
a 6-0 or 6-1 score. In doubles competition, juniors Michael Rodriguez and Jerome Tadeo contributed greatly to
the success of the team. They earned a 22-4 record, which included two winning streaks: one for 8 sets and one
for 9 sets. Of those 17 sets, nine were won by a 6-0 or 6-1 score.
The newer players gained valuable experience through their increased playing time, and have begun setting the
foundation for next season. Each day the team played a match, they gathered in the Youth Ministry center to pray
together. The following prayer reflected the team’s attitude.
A Player’s Prayer (author unknown)
God, source of my strength, protect me as I go my way.
In the face of failure and frustration,
Grant me the courage I need today.
Thank you for my life and health, to move and run free.
Thank you for letting me compete and to be the player you want me to be.
Stay with me, O God, till it’s time for me to rest.
May my game be pleasing to You, so through you, I can do my best. Amen.
BASEBALL —BY HEAD COACH ERIC AGAJANIAN
Tigers baseball had a good season this year for the varsity team. We continually grew as
the season went on. We ended up 3-9 in league and 5-16 overall. The record does not show
a good season but those five wins are the most in at least the past three seasons. At one
point, the team had a four-game winning streak.
We look forward to the future of the program!
LACROSSE —BY HEAD COACH KEVIN HOLT
The Bosco Tech lacrosse team ended its second
season with a hard-fought quarter final game at
home on May 14 against Vista High School. The
team made huge gains in just one year, going from a
0-10 record in their inaugural season to a 6-6 record
this season, qualifying for a playoff berth in the
2016 Pacific Lacrosse League tournament.
Congratulations to the fifteen seniors that started the
lacrosse program. Thanks for your dedication and
hard work.
Now, who's up for 2017!?

SENIORS ADVISE UNDERCLASSMEN SEEKING INTERNSHIPS
Interview skills and dressing professionally in the
workplace were some of the relevant topics seniors dis-
cussed with younger students preparing for summer in-
ternships during a recent lunch-time session on campus.
While some students are gearing up for already-secured
internships and others are interested in seeking summer
positions, the wise advice of seasoned upperclassmen
was practical and interesting. Thank you to Darrian
Gardea, Everson Cruz and Kyle Chiang for their big
brother approach to guiding other students in the steps to
succeed in the workplace. The seniors interned last sum-
mer for Reyes Construction, The Boeing Company and
Orbital ATK, respectively.
Hosted by Anne Sigoloff, Bosco Tech’s Manager of Foundation Relations, the session was one of several
practical workplace preparedness tutorials that have been held throughout the school year. Other sessions in-
cluded resume preparation, interview skills and workplace etiquette.

OLD CELL PHONES SOUGHT FOR MICROSCOPIC PHOTOS
The Science Department is looking for donations of old (but functioning)
iPhones that you may have lying around the house. Even obsolete iPhones will
work; the department needs only a camera and a WiFi connection.
At the beginning of the school year, we received a grant that allowed us to
purchase couplers that allow a smartphone to be used with a microscope or tele-
scope. Instructors found that these devices worked best when properly aligned (see
attached photo). However, optical alignment was too time-consuming for a typical
biology lab. Instead, they are seeking a few iPhones for the department that can
be aligned in advance. A 1000x photograph of the lining of
human small intestines (jejunum)
taken using a student microscope,
an iPhone 4, and a Orion SteadyPix
Pro coupler.
