Working Together for Good

All county elected officials, mayors, city councils, board of supervisors, state assemblymen, state senators, congressmen, and citizens throughout the county are invited to attend.

Representatives from County Mental Health, County Office of Education, LE Chaplaincy, Mission Solano/Homeless Advocate will also be available to provide information to the public and as an additional resource.

Inventor, teacher, writer, husband and father, John Muir—probably the country’s most extreme naturalist—made his home in Martinez from 1880 until his death in 1914. Married to Louie Strentzel, the daughter of a fruit rancher who owned 2,600 acres in the Alhambra Valley, Muir took over the family business in 1882. After the former Wisconsin farmer made enough in a ten-year period to last his entire lifetime, Louie convinced him to turn the daily operations of the ranch over to her so that Muir could return to his first love—travel and conservation—which eventually led to the development of the National Park Service.

Today guests can wander the grounds of the Muir house, which now sits on a 9-acre park, tour the Muir home and walk through what remains of the orchards. The trees still produce a limited amount of fruit which guests are welcome to enjoy.

Start your tour of the Muir site at the visitor center. There you can watch a 20-minute video that gives an overview of Muir’s life and works. A paved path will take you around the grounds and up to the house. Along the way, take time to

listen to the self-guided cell phone tour that will give you insight to what life was like when the Muirs lived there. The home itself is cozy and open all day to welcome guests. Tour the house on your own (there are no cell phone stops in the house) or take a ranger guided tour at 2pm each day. A park ranger is in the house at other times to answer questions.

Bring a picnic to enjoy in the orchards, or head over to Mount Wanda, named after Muir’s eldest daughter, which consists of 326 acres of oak woods and grasslands. The out-and-back hike is approximately 3 miles long with about 500 feet of climbing up to a view of the Carquinez Straits. Dogs on leash are allowed.

A second national historic site, The Martinez Adobe, is located on the western edge of John Muir’s historic orchards. Once where Wanda Muir made her home, the building now features bilingual exhibits from the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. Here you can learn about the Anza Expedition, when Spanish Lt. Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza led 240 men, women and children up the California coast in 1775.

Things to know: John Muir National Historic Site is located at 4202 Alhambra Avenue in Martinez. It’s open daily from 10am to 5pm. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission is free. No food or drinks are available for purchase. Restrooms are located in the visitor center. The visitor center and the first floor of the home are wheelchair accessible. Find Mount Wanda ¼ mile south from the visitor center on Alhambra Avenue. There is a parking lot at the trail head next to Franklin Canyon Road. Mount Wanda is open daily sunrise to sunset, but has no water or restrooms. For more information, visit nps.gov/jomu or call 925.228.8860.

What might we not know about your business? We offer a secured facility with 24 hour care and oversight for those with Dementia and non medical health care needs.

What benefits you most about being a chamber member? To serve our community any way that we are able and keep Solano Life House in the pulse of the very active calendar of events that are happening in Dixon.

CHEESE STEAK SHOP

Serving up the best Philly cheese steak sandwiches in the bay area for over 32 years, their motto is “Caution: May be habit forming.” Their secret? They start with 100% beef sirloin, chicken breast or veggie, cheese and top with a savory combination of grilled onions, sweet and hot peppers on a fresh, soft Amoroso roll.

They offer three sizes (7”, 10” or 15”), and a variety of premium and specialty sandwiches. My favorite is the spinach mushroom. The King of Philly is a 10” classic Philly with over 50% more meat and cheese.

They also offer salads, sides like curly fries, and fountain drinks to round out your meal.

In Vacaville: 1661 E. Monte Vista Avenue (Nut Tree Village), 447-5111. In Suisun: 241 Sunset Ave. (Heritage Park), 437-3020.

LUIGI’S DELICATESSEN

Luigi’s is a great place to grab a delicious and filling lunch or order a hot or cold sandwich platter for your next business meeting or catered event.

They have indoor or patio seating and offer a number of specialty sandwiches, like tri-tip or pastrami, plus gyros featuring meats from Boar’s Head with a variety of fresh baked bread options, like ciabatta and Dutch Crunch. Feel free to design your own creation. Chips and sides like garlic parmesan fries, and a number of fresh salads, including Greek, fruit, cole slaw and home-style potato will round out your meal. They also have a large selection of bottled pop and Italian sodas.

Located at 721 Texas Street in downtown Fairfield (near the courthouse). Open daily from 10-6. Call 428-7102.

The “Classic” Philly Cheese Steak topped with sauteed onions and sweet & hot peppers are featured on here from the Cheese Steak Shop, located in Vacaville and Suisun.

MR. PICKLE’SMr. Pickle’s offers approx-

imately 20 specialty sandwiches and wraps. Create your own made with meats like ham, roast beef, salami, turkey, pastrami, chicken or tuna salad. Bread choices include Dutch, sweet, wheat, sourdough, sliced wheat and marbled rye. They offer five different cheeses and choice of mayo, mustard, garlic sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles, peppers and onions. Extras include cheese, avocado, cranberry and bacon. Each sandwich includes a cookie to complete your meal.

They have a variety of freshly made salads (macaroni, potato, green, chef’s), soups and offer a kid’s menu as well as catering trays (sandwich, fruit and veggie).

Service is fast and friendly at both locations: Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop, 300 E. Monte Vista in Vacaville 453-1283, and Mr. Pickle’s Express,501 Peabody Rd. 452-0920. http://www.mrpickles.com.

ALHELI’S This little gem (decked out in

fabulous 50’s décor) is well worth the short trip to Dixon. Located just off I-80 at 2500 W. A Street, they offer a refreshing break from the typical fast food fare.

On the menu you’ll find American favorites like ham-burgers, hot dogs and pastrami sandwiches. They even feature fried pickles! However, theirmenu also features many traditional and non-traditional authentic Mexican selections, including breakfast and lunch burritos, made with giant homemade tortillas, menudo, chili verde nachos (a must try), carne asada salad, carne asada fries, and rolled tacos, to name a few. They also make their own tortilla chips.

My suggestion: try some of their Mexican specialties. The servings are super generous and the food quality is muy deliciouso! Call (707) 693-6929.

Celebrity appraiser Steven Yvaska of San Jose, “The Antiques Adviser” invites collectors to bring their favorite family heirlooms or latest garage sale finds for verbal identification and evaluation for $5.00 per item from 11am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Yvaska is available to assist collectors in pricing antiques for sale. Arrangements may also be made for private consultation including estate evaluation and written appraisals for insurance.

Collectors interested in repair of sentimental antique glassware may take advantage of services provided by Kenny Lang of Miracle Glass Repair of Grass Valley. Miracle Glass will be present during all Show hours providing professional repair of damaged glassware at reasonable prices. Mr. Lang has been restoring glassware for over thirty years for collectors and dealers throughout California and the Pacific Northwest. He can remove chips, fit stoppers and provide internal polishing. Daily food and beverage service will be provided by volunteers from Soroptimist International of Dixon. The Friends of the Dixon Library will once again hold a used book sale. Girl Scout Troop 301, Dixon, will sell cookies and volunteer as event helpers throughout the two-day event; and Dixon Sober Grad Night will hold a gift basket raffle. Solano Wine & Food Jubilee

Saturday, April 25th

The Jubilee Raffle’s top prize was so coveted last year, Solano Wine & Food Jubilee organizers have pledged to offer it again, thanks to a continuing collaboration with local auto dealer Rami Yanni. Yanni is general manager of three dealerships in Vacaville: Vacaville Nissan, Vacaville Dodge and Vacaville Buick GMC.

Yanni has agreed to again make available either a brand-new 2015 Buick Encore or a 2015 Nissan Altima to the Grand Prize winner of the Jubilee Raffle.

In addition to the choice of cars as a top prize, there will be $10,000 in cash awarded, as well, according to Wendy Jackson, raffle chair. There will be 12 winners of $125, 10 winners of $500, one winner of $1,000 and one$2,500 winner.

Odds of winning something are about one in 100, she adds, as only 2,500 tickets will be sold. And, to make the deal even more enticing, raffle organizers are offering a “buy two, get one free” incentive.

The Solano Wine & Food Jubilee Raffle is a fund-raising opportunity for the programs of NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement.

Raffle tickets are $50 each, or buy two and get the third free. They can be purchased by calling (707) 646-3133. Tickets can also be purchased with a credit card by fax at (707) 646-3135, or in person at the NorthBay Healthcare Foundation office at 4500 Business Center Drive in Fairfield. Event and raffle tickets are also available at Jackson Medical Supply, on Main Street in downtown Vacaville.

The winning tickets will be drawn at the 28th Annual Solano Wine & Food Jubilee, set for April 25, 2015 at the Specialty Event Center, 300 Chadbourne Road in Fairfield.

Ticket-holders need not be present to win, but those who do will experience Solano County’s finest opportunity to mingle and socialize while enjoying an elegant evening of wine, food and great music, all while benefitting a great cause – the programs of NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement.

Organizers also plan to offer a limited number of “VIP Table for 10” packages for Jubilee night again this year. These VIP tables include many of the benefits afforded VIP ticket-holders – early admittance, special treats on arrival, and access to the “VIP Lounge” – for $1,750. Please call 646-3133 to secure one of these

highly popular table packages. The 28th Annual Solano Wine & Food

Jubilee is a dressy, black-tie affair (denim discouraged). The event gets under way at6:30pm. Tickets, for those ages 21 and over, are $100 each and must be purchased in advance by calling (707) 646-3133, or online atwww.wineandfoodjubilee.org.
