Commander’s Team Report, Cdr Mark Stacy, AP

Thanks go to the Administrative Officer’s Meeting Team for a great wine tasting event at Watermark Marina from Divine Wines. They were assisted by Bill Loue of Mutual Wine Distributors. We tasted wines from Spain, New Zealand, Italy, and California. It was thoroughly educational with FUN fellowship!

Thanks go to Buck Latapie, S as Cruise Captain for the recent Independence Day Cruise at the new Port City Marina in Wilmington. As usual, we have a lot of boating activities this year which our AO will cover, but be sure to sign-up for at least one or more this year. Remember there are no membership meetings in July and August so that you can go on these cruises! However, there will be the Annual Past Commanders Shrimparoo on 20 August. Our Education and Executive Teams are in full swing this year! Thanks go to all the instructors, VEs, publicity postings, and Boat Show participants. I’ll let the appropriate Bridge members cover all the activities their Teams are doing.

It’s with great pleasure that I announce that the Chapman Award Nominating Committee nominated Lt/C Ed LoBalbo, SN, SEO for the Chapman Award for the Educational Year of 30 June to 1 July. Congratulations, Ed! Our SEO has taken our Squadron to the highest level of education it has ever been for our members. And, his teaching style and level of teaching is the best we have. Since this is just at the nomination phase, it must go to our DEO and then D27’s Nominating Committee, and then to National. Only one nominee is chosen in D27 and three are chosen in National. The award will be announced at the National Annual Meeting Council-Conference mid-February 2017. For more information, please see the following link http://www.usps.org/national/eddept/id/awards.htm

Don’t forget to get involved and volunteer for some Squadron activities so that you may be awarded a Merit Mark for this year. A “Merit Mark” is awarded by the United States Power Squadrons® chief commander to a member for substantial personal effort in furthering the interest, programs and objectives of USPS, its districts or squadrons. Make sure you let your bridge officer know what things you are doing by “making a difference” in squadron activities, and what you are doing in the community on behalf of our squadron. The deadline for submissions will be in October. Be sure to check out the Volunteers Needed article of this Foghorn issue so that you may do some civic service and promote the squadron. A great way to earn a Merit Mark! As our recent Past Commander says, “We need to increase the percentage of our members who become actively involved in our squadron and if we do, we will continue to grow. If you are not presently participating in a squadron activity, go to the organizational chart on our website, decide which committee or activity best aligns with your skills and interests, and volunteer.” We will definitely need your participation next year, but you need to start now.

This year our Squadron will combine the Annual Meeting and the Change of Watch (COW) on 10 December at Landfall Country Club in the Nicklaus Ballroom. Then, on 23 January we will have a Tropical Awards Celebration to award all the recipients in one meeting. This plan will be more cost effective and more FUN!

District 27 of the United States Power Squadrons® would like to have next year’s D27 Rendezvous in Carolina Beach. The CFS&PS ExCom has approved this motion. District 27 is comprised of 20 Squadrons in North Carolina. One of the important missions of the District is to provide leadership for activities that cross squadron boundaries. These activities include new officers training, rendezvous, and district meetings. Next year’s Rendezvous would be a joint effort from CFS&PS and the Charlotte Power Squadron. It should be a memorable event! Our XO has more detail .

Thank you for allowing us to publish a combined May & June Foghorn. Since we have so many cruises and summer activities lined up for July and August, we also will publish a combined July and August Foghorn. We will resume our monthly issues in September. Don’t forget to fly your United

States Power Squadrons® Ensign on your stern and the CFS&PS burgee on your bow rail while on the water this Summer and Fall.

Executive Officer’s Team Report, Lt/C Abe Walston, II, S

Boat Shows The Boat Show team will have a booth at the Wilmington Boat Show 9 -11 September 2016 which will take place at the Wilmington Convention Center and Port City Marina. It is slated to be a first-class boat show featuring boat lines from all over the Carolinas. If you are in the market for a boat, boating gear and/or equipment, put the Wilmington Boat Show on your calendar to take advantage of the “boat show only” sale

prices! Hundreds of boats will be featured both in the water and on land. This is a great opportunity to come out and test drive a boat, enjoy live entertainment on the pier, and see what the exhibitors have to offer. We will also have a booth (by invitation) at the 2016 North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Division 3 Employee Wellness Fair on 19 October 2016 where we will be distributing information on Boater Safety and Boating Safety Courses. The fair will be held in Castle Hayne, NC at the NCDOT Complex. We are also in the process of scheduling shows at West Marine and MarineMax; dates will be announced soon. Vessel Safety Checks The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) team has been very active and have performed 176 VSCs so far this year; we are well on our way to our goal of 200 vessels. We will be scheduling other events as we move through the summer. If you would like to become a Vessel Safety Examiner, it’s not too late. Just contact Lt Jim Boyd, P or P/Lt/C Tom Bello, AP and they will arrange one-on-one training and get you on the way to being certified. Safety We will be scheduling a flare shoot in the fall to get rid of outdated flares. We will send out an email and post it on the Squadron calendar. Public Relations The Public Relations Officer will be busy during the summer planning press releases for our September Public Boating Course (ABC) and Fall Cape Fear Sail & Power Squadron meetings. District 27 Rendezvous 2016 was held 17-19 June 2016 at Washington, NC and was a very enjoyable weekend. The weekend got underway with the Squadron Commanders’ meeting on Friday afternoon in which the creation of a District 27-wide Speakers’ Bureau was discussed. The discussion was led by Stf/C Ken Link, SN who shared some background information indicating that the United States Power Squadrons® membership has dropped from 80,000 to a little over 30,000 in the last 10 years, and one of the chief factors favoring member retention was high quality speakers. The idea is to have each squadron develop a list of speakers recruited from the Squadron and the community which they use to develop community interest in Power Squadron Membership and to increase attendance at squadron meetings. Each squadron will share their list with District 27 to develop a composite speakers database that will be available to all District 27 Squadrons. This Speaker’s Bureau information would be gathered by a small ad hoc group within District 27 and published via the District website. Squadrons recruiting speakers would insure their availability and willingness to potentially travel short distances to make presentations at other squadrons and groups in the area. Names of good speakers, their topic of expertise and willingness to travel will be assembled and put in a spreadsheet that will be available to all District 27 Squadrons. This Speaker’s Bureau spreadsheet will be a working document with information added on a regular basis. A Speaker’s Bureau committee meeting has been planned for the District 27 Fall Conference in Greensboro, NC. The Commanders’ meeting was followed by a welcome reception and buffet dinner at the NC Estuarium on Water Street. The Traditional Flag Raising Ceremony was held Saturday morning at Festival Park with an address by the Mayor of Washington who thanked the District for choosing Washington as the site for the 2016 District 27 Rendezvous. Saturday afternoon activities included shopping, attending an antique car show, sailing on a Jeannie B Schooner, touring the NC Estuarium, River Rowing plus many other activities. Saturday was capped off by a delicious cookout style dinner at Festival Park on the Pamlico River. The District 27 Rendezvous was a lot of fun, and I would encourage everyone to put it on their calendar next year especially since it will be in the Wilmington area. District 27 Rendezvous 2017 We were approached by District Lt/C Paula Stewart AP, the District 27 Executive Officer and a member of the Charlotte Power Squadron, to ask if the Cape Fear Sail & Power Squadron would join with them to host the 2017 District 27 Rendezvous at either Wilmington or Carolina Beach next year. She requested that four people from the Cape Fear Squadron join with four people from the Charlotte Squadron to serve as the planning committee for the 2017 Rendezvous. The CFS&PS Executive Committee has approved this request and a CFS&PS D27 Rendezvous planning committee has been formed consisting of Lt/C Abe Walston, S, P/C Nita Neumeister, AP, P/C Joan Payne, S, P/C Mary Jo Worcester, S, 1/Lt Ned Rhodes, AP. This committee will work closely with D/Lt/C Paula Stewart and the Charlotte Power Squadron to plan the 2017 District 27 Rendezvous.

CPR Training Cardiac arrest that occurs out of the hospital has a dismal survival rate of 1-3%. Studies show that with bystander CPR, the survival rate can be doubled or tripled; so being trained in CPR may save a life. We will conduct Heartsaver Adult/Child CPR with AED and First Aid training on 18 August 2016 at 1230 (12:30PM) in the Harnett Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut St., Wilmington, NC. If you would like to sign up for this CPR training session and have not done so, please contact Lt/C Abe Walston (cell – 910-520-0763, email – [email protected]).

Educational Officer’s Report, Lt/C Ed LoBalbo, SN

“Come for the Boating Education . . . Stay for the Friends” SM

The squadron’s scholarship donation of $1,000 to the Cape Fear Community College’s Marine Technology Program

was highlighted in the recent Ensign magazine. Hope everyone saw it.

Our Kids & Boating Program that was locally produced by the Cape Fear Sail & Power Squadron’s Education Team

was submitted to National Education Office Craig D. Fraser, SN at national and District Education Officer David Osmolski, SN at D-27

for their evaluation. We hoping that this program will serve as a plug-n-play template for other squadrons across the country to use.

We had a great deal of success with it, and we’re confident other squadrons will experience similar results. Hopefully, more will follow.

On the heels of this success, we are now exploring another opportunity in “locally producing” a program aimed at adult membership

and centered around PowerBoat Handling. The title is not important yet - but we have a very capable and experienced team of

volunteers who have sign up to collaborate on its development. Our charge is to put together an offering that answers to what our

members and students have been asking for with some real hands-on water training combining elements from the Boat Operators

Course (BOC), Partner-in-Command (PIC), Seamanship and our ABC/OTW programs. Look for more on this soon.

Course schedule:

Classroom work for our Partner in Command (PIC) seminar is over. The on the water segment is being worked on.

Junior Navigation (JN) has completed with five student exams sent to National for evaluation. Awaiting results.

Our Seamanship (S) course for the spring is wrapped up with the last class on 20 July. What a fun group of 14 students and

the ever present cookies were a treat.

August will be a break from our teaching schedule.

Piloting (P) will kick off our Fall semester on 7 September with P/C Roger Simmons, SN taking the lead.

ABC, our public boating course, is set for 17 September with 1/Lt Ned Rhodes, AP in the lead and registrar Arleen

Rhodes providing support. We have 72 graduates from our February and May classes, so we need 28 students to reach our

100+ target for the year. If you know someone who would benefit from learning the fundamentals of safe boating, please

have them visit the course website www.capefearboatingcourse.org.

Our Instructor Development (ID) class will begin 4 October under the leadership of P/C Wilbur Chapman, SN. Everyone

interested in joining our Education Team should sign up for this important and mandatory course.

Pending the results of our JN class we may offer the Navigation (N) course in September. Marine Navigation Systems (MNS)

is a new course and a possible offering for fall. In addition, our Sail (SA) instructors are anxious to have another offering of

this course.

As usual, I’ll close my report with a special invite to anyone interested in joining our Education Team and becoming a certified

instructor. A level of boating experience is helpful, but we welcome all members who have an aptitude and ability to teach boating

subjects – some requiring boating experience and others not-so-much. If you are interested in joining our instructor team, please

email me at [email protected].

Administrative Officer’s Team Report, Lt/C Teresa Sorrenti, S

Meetings: The first half of the year ended with a bang – I think everyone enjoyed themselves at the wine-tasting

during our Membership Meeting on 27 June. Special thanks to George and Sharon Oed, Linda LeBer, S and Lt/C

Steve Thompson, S and 1/Lt Sue Thompson for set-up and clean-up!

There were 59 members and 10 guests at Watermark on a lovely evening. Prior to the tasting our own drone pilot, Lt John Kelly, JN

managed to get everyone to stand outside (and delay their wine tasting) for a unique view of the attendees.

.

After swearing in Bill and Peggy Richards, (see below) and “taking care of business,” we were able to turn the session over to Bill

Loue of Mutual Wine Distributors. Assisted by staff from Divine Wines, he provided generous samples of seven wines – one sparkling,

three white and three red. Based on the purchases placed afterwards, we think everyone enjoyed this event! Of course, some enjoyed

it more than others – new member Steve Miller won the door prize of a wine picnic backpack, and Lt/C Jean Stacy, S won the 50/50

after years of trying – maybe she spent her winnings on wine?

The next meeting will be 26 September at Bluewater Grill where our speaker will be Frank Taylor, who will report on his sail around

the world aboard his boat Tahina.

Boating Activities: Our Boating Activities for 2016 are all posted to the website and sign -ups are well underway. If any of these

outings appeal to you, be sure to sign up now! The sooner we know the numbers, the better we can plan – particularly events that

require the coordinator to make marina arrangements. Cruise Captains’ contact information is on the website. Note that we have a

NEW cruise for Labor Day, thanks to Robert Hagendorf, S!

Upcoming Boating Activities:

Membership Involvement: 1/Lt Susan Thompson, S is capturing some of our Squadron cooks ’ recipes on the website; we hope

you participate! She has a standard format for submissions, and you don’t have to worry since the recipes will be safely inside the

Members Only section. Think about items you may want to share from past competitions (Chili, Soup, Cornbread, and Dessert),

Docktails, or meals aboard (this pretty much means any delicious recipes you want to share). She has quite a collection already and

hopes to have it complete by the end of the year.

Pot Luck groups coming back – you should have received an email from Sue VanNote, S with the particulars. If you want to be

included, please contact her at [email protected]

Membership: We are already at 37 new members in 2016, however, we are still short of sponsors. If you are not familiar with

the concept of sponsorship, it is basically a mentor to the new member. We will try to pair newbies with sponsors of similar interests/

living nearby, or other criteria to improve the experience. We are especially looking for more recent members (those who remember

what it was like to be a new member!!). If you are interested, please let me or Lt Bob Smith, S know. We expect to have more new

members after the September ABC Class, so the need will only increase.

The current group of new members gathered at Sea Path Yacht Club on 29 June for an Orientation Meeting to learn about our

organization, and to share impressions and ideas. Eighteen new members with two guests and twelve sponsors joined eight officers

for an enjoyable and informative evening. Six members were sworn in as well. Welcome to the following new members and thanks to

those stepping up to sponsor!

Sunshine Committee, Lt Jan Hilbert

Get well cards were sent to Lt Francine Roche and P/C Mary Jo Worcester as each of them took an unfortunate fall. They are doing much better since the incidents. We are happy to hear that news.

In addition, cards were sent to Robert Raleigh who is home recuperating from elective surgery while Jimmy Thomas had the pleasure of a one night stay at New Hanover Hospital for some issues he was dealing with.

The gentlemen are wished the earliest recoveries possible for their ordeals.

If you know of anyone in need of a card, please phone 910-350-0902 or E-mail [email protected] and I will get a greeting off from the group.

In the meantime, good wishes to Francine, Mary Jo, Robert and Jimmy. You are all in our thoughts ‘til we hear that you are fine and dandy. Hurry and get well.

NORTH EAST CAPE FEAR RIVER CRUISE , Lt Shelby Battle, P

I can see it now…boating friends meeting in the brisk morning of 22 October at the North Carolina Wildlife Boat Ramp in Castle Hayne.

After getting boats launched and everybody on board, we’ll take off on the pristine North East Cape Fear River for the sixteen-mile trip

to the home of O.B. Battle, P and Shelby Battle,P for a raft up. This may be the first raft up with inside toilets. Bring food to share and

plan to spend a few hours viewing the river that looks much the same as it did when Captain William Hilton came up it in 1663. Two

areas still keep the names he gave them, “Stag Park” for the impressive deer he saw on the banks and “Holly Shelter” named for the

massive Holly tree that he and his men took shelter under.

The plan is to meet at the Castle Hayne Boat Ramp at 10:00AM. O.B. and Shelby will meet you there to make sure everyone heads

“up river.” If you have a boat that can be trailered, please plan to come and invite others to come with you. If you would like to come but

don’t have a boat smaller than the USS Battleship North Carolina just call Shelby Battle (910-470-2890) and she will get you there.

If you would like to come in a land yacht it takes about 35 minutes from UNCW. Take I-40 to exit 408. Turn right on Hwy 210 and go

three miles and turn left onto Shaw Hwy. Go four and a half miles and turn left onto Carl Meeks Dr., cross over the one-lane bridge and

get to the river. Turn left onto Holly Shelter Estates Road. The Battle’s house number is 1255 South Holly Shelter Road in Rocky Point.

Of course, you could trust your GPS.

We are going to have a great time. Go to the Squadron website (capefearpowersquadron.org) and scroll down to “Squadron Events”

and sign up!

Volunteers Needed, Cdr Mark Stacy, AP

The Squadron has been asked to provide vessels to monitor some boating activities in Carolina Beach, and a joint event on the USS Battleship North Carolina:

1) To benefit Ocean Cure, our Squadron has been asked again to monitor paddleboard participants in the Carolina Beach Stand-up Paddleboard Race on 10 September. Ocean Cure is a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting at-risk, medically-fragile youth and adults by providing free surf camps, lessons and related programs. It is a great way to provide a civic service for a good cause, secure some publicity, and some VSCs. They need at least four boats to provide throwable PFDs and swim ladders, if needed.

2) To benefit Step Up for Soldiers sponsored by the Carolina Beach Island Men, our squadron has been asked to monitor the participants in the Dragon Boat Regatta on 17 September. They need at least two boats to actively monitor the race from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. They have also asked us to provide one or two boats to monitor the practice rounds on Thursday and Friday, 15-16 September from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. Likewise, this is a great way to provide a civic service for a good cause and secure some publicity for our membership.

3) The Ft Macon Sail & Power Squadron will have an event on the USS Battleship North Carolina on 15 September. We would like to join their event. This is not to “host” their event, since they are coordinating it. However, we will need a co-ordinator to assist with our participation.

If you would like to join in the fun and volunteer for any or all of these activities, please let me know. Cdr Mark Stacy, AP [email protected].

MASONBORO CHANNEL PICNIC CRUISE, Lia and Pete Spark, Cruise Captains

On Saturday 23 July, 33 members attended our Masonboro Channel Picnic Cruise arriving between 9:30AM and 10:30 AM. We had 11 boats carrying people, picnic baskets, beach chairs and umbrellas. As often found near Masonboro Inlet, the incoming tidal current greeted us as we attempted our beach docking with grades and cheers from all watching. With our resident beach master, Lt John Kelly, JN assisting, all boats successfully anchored without incident and were accounted for. The highest score for anchoring the quickest goes to Lt David Munnikhuysen, JN and his first mate Liane. While David teaches anchoring this was not a surprise, however, they timed their arrival perfectly with a much reduced current - good planning. Initially the weather looked a little concerning but weather expert Lt/C Rick Sorrenti, AP promised it would burn off and all would be well. He was right, it was a beautiful day. As seems to be the theme of morning gatherings, someone uttered the words, “It's 5 o'clock somewhere” and out came the beer and wine. After everyone's arrival and with conversation flowing, we all gathered for a group photo (see photo). Shortly afterwards a nearly all-girl team beat the nearly all-boy team with a game of beach baseball winning 6-1 win. Go ladies! A few other games where taking place like tug of war in the water which added to the day’s fun. With the tide ebbing, the bigger boats started to leave a little after 1:00PM followed by the smaller boats a short while later. Just enough beach time to make it a perfect day. Thanks to Leo Spencer, P and Lori Spencer, P the original cruise captains. A special thank you to Lt/C Ed LoBalbo, SN and Lt John Kelly, JN who assisted us on our very first cruise captain role.

CBC a/k/a Book Club #2, Christina Miller, S

In June, the CBC ladies gathered at The Niche Kitchen & Bar, enjoyed some vittles, shared some adventures and discussed SWAG - Southern Women Aging Gracefully by Melinda Rainey Thompson. The book is a collection of essays about the peculiarities of southern living. The subjects ranged from sharing your magnolia tree with the neighbors to carrying a pocketbook instead of a purse. The reading was light, only slightly amusing, and has been done before. These southern ladies desired something with more substance. Hopefully The Apple Orchard by Susan Wiggs will fill that need. We will be meeting at The Toastery for yet another adventure in dining. In July, the ladies of the CBC met at The Famous Toastery on Wrightsville Avenue to discuss Susan Wiggs novel The Apple Orchard. It is the story of a young woman who was raised by her grandmother, in the absence of a traveling mother. This is the only family she has ever known. She then learns about her father, his family and her inheritance. The club felt that the novel had some merit as an easy summer read. The plot was interesting but the outcome was rather predictable. It also could have been condensed without jeopardizing the story. Next month we will review a Dorothea Benton Frank novel The Last Original Wife. The Olympia has been chosen as our meeting location.

Book Club #1 July, Genie Lancaster, S

The book club met at the home of Genie Lancaster on June 19th to discuss A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Present were Francine Hall, Beverly Smith, Marilyn Freeman and Genie Lancaster. The members present all agreed that the book was unexpectedly very good and heartwarming. Janet Anderson, who had planned to attend, also had the same reaction. All of us laughed, cried, and felt that the book was a very good read. This was a first attempt by the Swedish author Fredrik Backman. Below is a small overview that lets the reader into the plot of the book. Ove is getting older. He’s the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People in Ove’s neighborhood call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But behind Ove’s cranky exterior lies a story and a sadness. When an accident-prone young couple with two young daughters moves in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox one November morning, overturning his well-ordered routine, it is the spark in a surprising, enlivening chain of events—featuring unkempt cats, unexpected friendships, arrogant bureaucrats, several trips to the hospital, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. Swept along in the tide, Ove is forced to change and learn to understand his neighbors and the modern times into which he has been grudgingly dragged. But as his neighbors learn more about the reasons behind Ove’s grumpy façade, they must also band together to protect each other and their neighborhood in a struggle that will leave no one, including Ove, unchanged. The next meeting will be August 16

th at the home of Gaye Thomas. The title of the book is Dead Wake by Erik Larson.
