Welcome WOEA back to a new school year! I hope all are rested and rejuvenated. This summer

proved to be a very busy one for many members. Many members took advantage of WOEA and OEA sponsored workshops and trainings. In fact, thirty-two members, including many new faces, traveled to Chicago, Illinois for the annual NEA-RA.

This year the NEA-RA representatives were addressed by Vice-President Joe Biden. His message, as well as the message from our President Dennis Van Roekel, encouraged us to come back to Ohio ready to continue the fight. As we head toward one of the biggest votes of our educational careers (the repeal of SB5) we must be vigilant and stay the course.

As educators and support staff; we enter buildings, classrooms, buses, kitchens, offices and garages where political decisions impact the work we do. It is time for us to be a part of the decision making process! Today, there is no pending Ohio legislation more important than the repeal of SB5. Protecting our gains through collective bargaining is crucial for us all.

While canvassing my neighborhood, sharing information and obtaining signatures to repeal SB5, I was amazed at the number of people who were unaware of the bill. I finished the day thinking that as educators we have not done all we can do to get our message out. It is imperative for each of us to

participate in OEA’s Friends, Family and Neighbor Campaign. Through the campaign if each of us can tell two people about the repeal of SB5 and they tell two people, well you get the picture. Then on November 8th by voting NO on Issue Two we will succeed.

Have a great school year and again, welcome back!

ACTIVATE! ORGANIZE! MOBILIZE! NOW! VOTE NO ON ISSUE 2 TO REPEAL SB5

by Dawn Wojcik, WOEA Liaison to We Are Ohio

November 8, 2011 will be a milestone day for all public

employees in the state of Ohio. I hope and pray it will be the day

that teachers working with police officers, fire fighters, nurses, and

other public employees stood together to defend their right to

collectively bargain fair wages and working conditions. I fear it

will be the day that Governor Kasich and his cronies set us, middle

-class public servants, back 50 years or so to the days of the

good-old-boy system of favoritism.

I have been volunteering since Labor Day, and I’m proud of my

colleagues who have joined me. The 10 or so of us who have

stepped up to the plate so far will not be enough volunteer effort

to overcome the money being spent by the other side. We need

every member to volunteer weekly until Election Day. Contact your

LRC to learn the closest place for you and your members to

volunteer. Visit www.woea.org for information. Activate NOW!

Let’s defend our strong public education system by

working together with all public employees to protect our

futures. Volunteer NOW to DEFEAT ISSUE 2 (REPEAL SB5).

Northmont Classified E.A. members Barry Smith and

Tim Wolf stand with Shelli Jackson, Grand Lake

Service Council LRC after a day of canvassing.

The WOEA Gavel to Gavel Newsletter is

published 8 times annually for its members.
