The Montreal and Southern CountiesInterurban Line or M&SC

The M&SC began in operation in 1909. Financingwas arranged throught the Grand Trunk (later CNR). When the M&SC went bankrupt in 1920 the line became a wholly owned divison of CN. The line opperated until 1956 when it was shut down. Some tracks remain in operation between St-Hubert and Marieville. The M&SC Terminal still stands at the corner of McGill and Youville.

The Expo Express This was Montreal's shortest livedrapid transit system. Built for the 1967World's Fair the system was to runthrought the fair grounds to DominonSquare in downtown Montreal. Butwhen it was announced that the Metrowould be extended to the site the linewas shortened to run between Placed'Accueil and La Ronde. It operatedbetween April and October of 1967 for Expo '67. Then it ran only on theexpo islands with an additional stopat Agriculture between 1968 and 1972.

This map aims to show the extensive network of interurban, commuter rail,and rapid transit lines operated in the greater Montreal Region. The city hasseen a dramatic changes in the last fifty years in the evolution of rail transit.Streetcars and Interurbans have come and gone, and commuter rail wasdwindled down to two lines and is now up to three. Over these years the Metro was built as was the now dismantled Expo Express.

Some Authors have classified the Montreal Park and Island and Montreal Terminal Railway as Interurbans but most authoritive books on Interurbans defineonly the Montreal and Southern Counties as an Interurban Line. The other lines were surburban streetcar lines with some Interurban characteristics.
