Transition It was great to see the Transition students excited and eager to start school on Friday. We all had a great time getting to know each other, playing dress ups, exploring the garden, borrowing library books, learning about the letter 'a', making alligator craft and much more! It was a very busy and fun day! What a great looking group.

PRINCIPAL NEWS
What a wonderful pleasure it was
to have our 2017 Kindy Transition
students Belle, Carter, Dakota,
Rick, Danni-ella, Connor, Ella and
Kaitlin start last Friday. Miss Reilly
and all of the teachers were
amazed by how quickly they settled
into the ‘BIG’ school routine. We
are very lucky to have also a
qualified volunteer, Miss Carina,
helping out with all Miss Reilly’s
exciting plans for the program.
Congratulations to all of our
students who have made great
improvements in their writing, in
particular to those students who
have mastered the skills to move on
to the next group.
REACHING FOR THE STARS
To be ‘SUCCESSFUL, LITERATE,
21st CENTURY LEARNERS’
requires students to not only to
have strong reading and writing
skills but also to be creative and
critical thinkers, work
collaboratively and communicate
clearly. Over the next few weeks
students will revist their narrative
assessments, using these 21st
Century Skills to analyse ways they
could have improved their stories.
WHAT IMPRESSED ME THIS WEEK
This week I was impressed by how
well students have settled into
their new literacy groups and are
already in the pursuit of
excellence.
2016 Premier’s Spelling Bee
Time is running out for students to learn their words for the
upcoming in class school spell off. The spell off will be held in
Week 5 as our nominations for the regional Championships
need to be finalised and registered by the end of that week.
The spelling bee is a great opportunity for our students to
participate in an event that this year has attracted 940 schools,
with 136 190 students participating state-wide.
Four spellers will be selected to represent our school, two from
Years 3 and 4 and two from Years 5 and 6.
The official word lists for the 2016 Premier’s Spelling Bee have
been provided by Macquarie Dictionary.
Any students or parents wishing to view the annotated word lists
will be able to do so via the following link or alternatively search
for 2016 Premier's Spelling Bee. Annotated lists provide a guide
on how to pronounce the words and their meaning.

premiers-spelling-bee
These lists are password protected. The password is unable to
be published in a newsletter or on the Internet, so if you wish to
access these lists, please contact myself or Miss Reilly and we
will provide the password to you.
Please note:
* Junior words (Years 3 and 4) begin at Level 1 and go to Level 5.
* Senior words (Years 5 and 6) begin at Level 2 and go to Level 7.
* When being tested on these words students will not have to
state whether a letter is capitalised or not.

Notes from our intrepid reporter and foreign correspondent; Chloe Begley
Hi everyone! Last part of our trip guys, which couldn’t come quick enough because I miss all of you too much! Our last part of Canada tour was really great we saw where the Olympics were held in 2010 and went on a huge gondola to get there. Its goes for about 3km all round up into the mountains where there was still snow. I was so terrified to go up there as I hate heights and then on the way down it stopped mid run and I was so scared!
After we finished our amazing tour of Canada we headed off to Hawaii which is the prettiest place ever! We actually couldn't do alot because there was a hurricane on the weekend which meant it was very wet and windy. After it cleared we climbed Diamond Head which is an old tuff cone, made out of magma. It is a pretty steep climb but when you're at the top the views are pretty cool. This place was actually America’s first defence set up in World War 2. If you look at the pictures carefully you can still see the bunkers where they would keep a look out to sea.
Then today we went to a place called Kelowa Ranch which may just be the coolest place ever. It is where they made Jurassic Park, Mighty Joe Young and Pearl Harbour. It is a working farm but they run tours and still make movies there. It was also a military base in World War 2 and in my pictures you can see the bunkers they would hide in. We got to walk through them and see how they lived. They even had weapons that took 6 men to use and would shoot out as far as the horizon. We also went 4wd and quad bike riding here. Very cool place to visit. Cant wait to see all of you on Monday.
Miss you lots Mrs Begley

In the first two weeks of Term 3 I have had the pleasure of teaching Mrs Begley's Kindergarten class. We have been extremely busy studying 'People and the places they live', the upcoming 'Olympic Games' and doing lots of writing and maths activities. Kindergarten have worked extremely hard and have made an excellent start to the term. Well done Kindergarten and thanks for making my time with you so much fun! Keep working hard. From Miss Kensit
Rosellas.
This week students will begin studying their new LOTE topic - Brazil and the Portuguese language. We will be looking at the Brazilian culture and the Olympics. This unit will make many connections with our Geography unit this term.
Hawks
This week we begin our new Geography unit. We are studying global connections with a focus on our relationship with our nearest neighbour, Papua New Guinea. By the end of the unit we should be able to explain the historical links between Australia and Papua New Guinea, what the current links between the two countries are and what will the relationship be like in the future.

THIS WEEK IN THE
KITCHEN GARDEN
What’s Growing?
Students have been very busy looking at all of the plants that have grown over the holidays. Some of the different plants spotted growing in the garden at the moment are Spinach, Beetroot, Carrot, Radish, Broccoli and Cauliflower just to name a few. The Transition students were very excited to see lots of radish in the garden and to learn it can be used to cook lots of yummy foods. The students were all working together to pull out some of the many big weeds that had grown in the garden over the holidays. The students were amazed at how big some of the weeds were. Miss Reilly

Hi bankers. Congratulations to our winner of term 2 competition Lauren. Well done to the other bankers for their ongoing and consistent banking. This term we have an invisible pen and a skipping rope as rewards. Parents, if you would like to open a new account for your child, please don't hesitate to contact me at the school Friday mornings. This year we're giving students the chance to win a family trip for up to two adults and three children to explore Australia Zoo and meet Bindi and Robert Irwin.
