What is Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

The word itself holds the meaning - fibro- or fibrous tissue, myo- or muscle and algos which means pain, so Fibromyalgia

or FM means muscle pain. FM is what we call a syndrome, which is a collection of symptoms, in other words a number of related complaints. As of the present date there is no consensus on the

causation..

If you are diagnosed with FM you feel achy and your muscles hurt. Other symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbance, and joint stiffness. One of the signs of FM are the so-called tender

points (used to be 9 now there are 18!) all of which happen to be in very common ‘hot spots’ for tension and stress, including base of the skull, right under the scapula, top of gluteus near sacrum, etc.

I am not saying that FM does not exist and that sufferers are not truly feeling pain and discomfort. I have been a massage therapist for 16 years and I have treated thousands of people with

various aches and pains. Over recent years the incidence or I should say incidence of diagnosis of FM has been staggering. I have some observations which are purely subjective, of certain commonalities

in my clients that suffer from FM.

• HighlymotivatedtypeApersonalities• Frequentflyers-usuallypeoplethatneedtotravelfor work • Sleepdisturbed• Peoplethathaveahardtimequietingtheirthoughts

I believe that one of the symptoms, namely sleep dis-turbance, may be more responsible for the condition than anything

else. We need Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep to survive. You can live longer without food than you can without REM. Unfor-tunately many people because of their level of daily stress do not achieve REM sleep, even though they may be getting 6-8 hours

in bed. They sleep a few hours and then wake up, maybe just for a short time, going right back to sleep again, repeating this cycle through the night, but all before they are able to get into a deep

enough sleep to achieve an REM state. Most people will not com-plain about not getting a good night’s sleep if they are in this type of pattern – it is not a classic insomnia and they feel relatively rested.

The problem when you do not get REM sleep is that you dream less and you may not process the day’s events, or be able to produce enough serotonin. You may not start to complain about how lousy you feel until you get the pain symptoms, and then the sleep issue is

considered an affect of the pain and not the other way around.

Thefrequentflyingisanotherthingthatkeepscomingup with my clients. When you travel by air your body is being com-pressed in an artificial environment. It is a fact that airline pilots arenotallowedtoflytoomanycontinuoustrips, becauseofthe

risk of decompression sickness, also known as divers’ disease, the bends or caisson disease. If you are a passenger however there are norestrictionsonhowmuchyoucanfly.Someofthesymptomsof

decompression sickness overlap with FM.

I’m not suggesting that massage is the cure for Fibromy-algia. Massage is however an approach to reducing the stress in our lives and a way to cope with its pressures. Massage can also go along way in helping with sleep dysfunctions by producing serotonin and

dopamine.

SEA ISLE CITY-- Waxing down your surfboard has gone high tech. “Once you apply it, it fills the pours microscopi-cally and creates on bond with the sur-face,” said Surf Nano Products, LLC Co-Founder Andy Giordano.

Founders of Sea Isle based Surf Nano Products showed off what they describe as the ultimate board enhancer. The product takes just minutes to apply to the bottom of a board and it basically re-pels water.

“The board becomes faster with less drag,” said Giordano. He added, “It makes it a lot easier to get out and enjoy the water.” So your next surf session can be a little faster. The whole application kit costs about $30.00 and just about anybody with a board can go through the 3-step process to clean, apply and buff the clear product that’s also eco friendly.

“It’s a silica base, which is basically beach sand,” said Giordano. It’s also catching on with the pros. “Some of the top racers Gerry Lopez, Darrick Doerner are say-ing they are gaining about 800 feet in a 3-mile race,” said Giordano.

Even Tom Jones, who is currently on a mission to paddleboard from Florida to New York City, applied the product be-fore traveling over 1,000 miles on a world record-breaking trip. “Put the product on both of his standup boards, all of his GPS equipment, goggles and he’s breaking re-cords everyday with speed,” said Giorda-no.

They say the coating is virtually universal. It can be used in the surf, turf and even air.

“FAA control towers we’re working with, NASCAR has done a study and found out they were dropping 2-4% drag off the ve-hicles,” said Giordano.

All of this from a coating that one local company says is a very unique product. “We are the only guys are there doing it at this point,” said Company Co-Founder Howard Loveless.

The product can be purchased online. Just check NBC40’s “Links Page” for the Surf Nano Products website. It can also be pur-chased at local authorized retailers.

Most images taken by amateur photographers are taken at eye level - this means most of these pictures are taken from the narrow range of 5 to 6 feet in height. Taking a picture from a lower van-tage point (for example crouching or even lying on the ground) can add grandeur and significance

to the subject, while getting more height (from climbing up a tree, fence or steps) will reduce the significance of the subject in your scene. Examples of us-

ing this could be taking a picture of your children playing looking from the ground, or capturing a busy marketplace scene where no one person would stand out over another.
