MOOREA ROAD RALLY

Gather up for a short briefing on today’s « Rally » around Moorea. A team building

event and fun way for groups to discover Moorea while doing a full tour around the

island at their own pace.

Each team of 4 will get an A/C rental car (manual) and a straw bag containing a “road

book” and some important hints. Then off they go with their team to discover the

island.

On the way the teams will have to find specific objects and places, draw pictures of the

scenery, answer questions all referring to the culture, history & geography of Moorea.

The teams will make several stops and will have to communicate with locals to find the

answers to several questions, they will visit the most beautiful sites of the island and can

do everything at their own pace -time is not important for the results - they can even

stop to shop on the way if want!

A real game track that will end at the beautiful property “Painapo Beach” where they

will be met with a refreshing fruit cocktail. Here, they will hand back their straw bag

with “treasures” & road book for corrections.

An awards presentation closes the rally at Painapo Beach or at the hotel/ cruise ship in

the evening). The prizes are simple local products such as pineapples, local fruit juices

and liqueurs;. However other prizes such as a black pearl or trophies made of Mother of

Pearl or wood can be arranged at extra cost. A black pearl treasure hunt in the lagoon

can be organised at extra cost here too.

Optional : A lunch at Painapo Beach can to close the rally. This is a perfect place to

organise casual & truly authentic Polynesian " Tamaara’a" feast with the meal cooked in

the "Ahima’a" ground oven (the food is cooked on heated stones wrapped in banana

leaves). Roast suckling pig, lagoon fish, breadfruit are just a few of the native delicacies

of a Tamaara'a feast. A more classic barbecue can be organised for the groups who

prefer.

Access to the beach. Showers to rinse available on spot.

Guests can keep their cars and return them at the pier/hotel in the afternoon or we can

arrange for the card to be left at Painapo Beach and organise a bus transfer back to the

DOLPHIN & WHALE

WATCHING EXPEDITION

Join marine biologist Dr. Michael Poole or his assistant for this combination eco-tour and research expedition focusing on wild, free-ranging dolphins. Dr. Poole has been studying dolphins in French Polynesia since 1987. Depart the pier aboard a covered boat for the scenic ride to Moorea’s reef. Spinner dolphins, the slightly larger rough-tooth dolphins and pilot whales can be seen around Moorea, with spinner dolphins regularly swimming inside the reef. Dolphins are found on 95% of the tours, but the engaging narrative and sheer magnificence of Moorea’s coastline will ensure a rewarding time. Guests visiting between July and early November may also have an opportunity to view the humpback whales perform their annual mating and calfing rituals. As with all creatures in their natural environment, we cannot guarantee the presence of animals, and tickets are non-refundable should a sighting not occur. At the end of your tour you will have an opportunity to go swimming or snorkeling directly from the boat (time permitting) before being transferred back to the pier. This is an observation tour and is not a swim opportunity with the dolphins.

NOTE

The company offering this tour follows international ecotourism guidelines and is an active contributor to the conservation of the dolphins and whales here in French Polynesia. Your participation in this tour will help to further this goal!

MOOREA LEGACY TOUR

This is a leisurely half-day tour that covers many topics, but also highlights the legacy of two American families that have influenced the recent history of Moorea – the Gumps and the Kellums. Their impact on the islands, whether in business, or descendants, or great stories to tell, extends well beyond their lifetime. Richard Gump inherited ownership and management of the famous Gump Department

Store in San Francisco from his father. He also inherited land in Moorea, which he

eventually donated to UC Berkeley in the early 80’s. The resulting Richard Gump South

Pacific Research Station has become the premier US scientific institution in the South

Pacific. The station plays host to an impressive array of research projects and field

courses, and through its Atitia Cultural Center provides outreach to the local schools and

community. We will have a guided tour of the station and Atitia Center, hear about

ongoing projects, and have a chance to discuss the role that an institution like this can

play in local and global conservation issues

The Kellum family first came to Moorea in 1924 onboard a 170-foot schooner. They

settled on the shore of Opunohu Bay and their beautiful home and gardens have been

part of the local landscape ever since. We will visit their beachfront property where

Captain Cook anchored in 1777, and then walk along a short trail that emerges into the

tropical garden surrounding the Kellum house.

After leaving the Kellum gardens we will visit the Belvedere to have a spectacular view out over Opunohu Valley, property once owned by the Kellums, which is now public land.

NOTE Possibility to add a Tahitian feast at the Atitia Cultural Center in conjunction with the

tour. Presentation of the Tahitian Feast, where the process of cooking the food and each

of the local food items will be explained.

THE TRAIL OF THE

ANCIENTS

Discover a side of Tahiti rarely experienced – the beautiful mountainous interior of the Opunohu Valley. The trek starts at the archeological site “Teti’iroa” in the Opunohu valley, on the road to the Panoramic Viewpoint. Your guide will take you to the sites restored in 1972 by Professor Yosihiko Sinoto of the Bishop Museum. You will learn about Polynesian migrations, the main theories about the peopling of the islands and how they used religious, political and social sites called Polynesian Maraes. The track leads to modern carved tikis in the river and then leads to a pre-European settlement area with terrace farming. You will eventually end your visit at an archery platform with explanations about Polynesian sports. Along the ancient trails you’ll encounter plants used in traditional medicines, and native hardwood trees from which canoes, drums, weapons and ancestral tiki images were sculpted. Emerge at the edge of a pineapple plantation located in the foreground of Moorea’stowering peaks before returning to the ship.

TAHITIAN GROUND OVEN AT PAINAPO BEACH The Painapo Beach is a private property located on one of Moorea's most beautiful

beaches. This is a perfect place to try the “Poisson cru”, Tahiti’s “national dish” and a

must-try: chunks of raw fish (often tuna) and vegetables marinated in coconut milk and

lime juice. This is also a perfect place for enjoying a traditional Polynesian meal cooked

in the "Ahima’a" ground oven where suckling pig along with various starches (yams,

breadfruit, and bananas, for instance) are covered with banana leaves and cooked in the

ground. Painapo Beach on Moorea is one of our favorite places for this type of meal.

Here, you’re sure to find friendly Polynesians preparing some of the most delectable

cuisine this side of paradise.

Tables are set in the sand under a thatch roof, right by the lagoon. The place is casual

and held by a local family. The staffs are all members of the family and even the children

participate & serve the guests. This is truly an authentic Polynesian place, but one

should not expect the service of a real restaurant.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a fresh juice smoothie. Then, the owner will invite

to start the festivities of a Polynesian “Tamaara’a” with the uncovering of the "Ahima’a

oven and explanations are given on how to prepare the oven and the food. An array of

Tahitian food is displayed on a buffet.

NOTE Optional : if opting for a ground oven at night, it is recommended to add the

exceptional fire dancers of Moorea to perform, as well as the beautiful Otea and

Aparima dances that have made Tahiti famous.

Other entertainment could be a live band for the evening to dance under the stars.

Fireworks over the lagoon are also possible.
