He described himself as adequate but not spectacular in any of these sports. He felt that as a footb all quarterback in high school he developed strong leadership qualities. He recalled a metal tool box he made in high school shop class in which he locked a copy of a life goal   Win a National Championship as a Basketball Coach. He began his coaching career in 1984 His first college team was at Hamlin University with a long stint at Cal Poly Pomona coaching as an assistant to Darlene May and taking over the team to win championships in 2001 and 2002. Paul discussed the importance of people to any basketball program including coaching assistants, administrators and, most importantly, the players. Gaining the respect and support of all of those people is the key to success in any program. The support of both the college and wider community has been a primary reason for the success of Women s basketball at St. Marys. Paul answered numerous questions from the audience including the differences in programs at smaller and larger schools in the areas of scholarships, uniforms and equipment and travel expenses. He discussed the areas in which he recruits players concentrating on the west coast of the United States but also including Australia. Paul indicated that the most difficult part of coaching was the addition of 15 or 16 children to his life. Players need to understand their coach. His three rules are 1) Listen, 2) Be on time and 3) No drama. He feels that there is no real difference between the womens and mens sport  basketball is basketball. He tries to treat all of his players like the athletes that they are.
