Perspectives on sustainable housing development

• Different dimensions of sustainability are implicit within the interests of

different stakeholders, however each one is limited by its own role and

frame of action (budget, land, economic viability, affordability capacity)

• Current barriers to overcome (speculation, urban structure, uncertainty

in development costs.

• Opportunities for municipal housing projects (cultural shift, increasing

costs in mobility, associations between land owners and private

investment, normative and management tools)

Perspectives on collaborative planning approaches

• Opportunities: Chance to overcome barriers for development (less risk

in investment), scenario for local economic development (LED), address

users preferences, lead towards sustainable development.

• Barriers: incompatible interests, political stress, personal limitations, lack

of trust (transparency and economic)

Conclusions

Advantage of having a more comprehensive understanding of the barriers to befaced and opportunities when planning toward sustainable housing development inthe inner city.

A multi-dimensional collaborative approach to assess sites for municipal housingcould stimulate fruitful discussions in planning for sustainable development

Different methodologies and the use of a Planning Support System offer aneffective and transparent approach to better inform the planning process in multistakeholder’s environments.

Use of 3D models (communicative tools) and means to share and exploreinformation by stakeholders facilitated the process of knowledge building and.

Emphasis in using available geographic information. Collaborative planningenforce commitment towards the planning task and to information and datasharing.
