FOCUS ON EXPLICIT TEACHING ANDLEARNING

As I have visited many of our classrooms over the past fortnight,I have been pleased to see that students are engaged in theirlearning and can articulate what it is they are working towards.Teachers have set clear learning goals for students, clearlydefined classroom expectations and have provided studentswith Semester/Unit Overviews.

Our teachers have analysed the needs of students in theirclasses and are focussing their energies on ensuring everystudent succeeds in every class. We will provide explicitfeedback to students to help them improve and will employteaching strategies to suit their learning styles and needs.

We ask that you work with us to ensure students are achievingto their potential by working in partnership with us. Some thingsyou could do to support are:

THANKS TO PARENTS FOR SUPPORT WITHSCHOOL UNIFORM

I would like to thank parents/caregivers for your support inoutfitting your children in the full school uniform as required. Iunderstand that it is an expensive time of the year for families,but I am pleased to report that almost all of our students havethe full casual and formal uniforms.

It is our intention to promote student pride in their dress andin their school and we ask for your continued cooperation withthe school to ensure that this very high standard of dress issustained throughout the year. We wish to ensure that ourenergy is invested in student learning and improvement instudent outcomes, not following up on uniform issues.

CONTACT DETAILS

It is vitally important that we are kept up to date with anychanges of address or contact details for all of our families andemergency contacts. Throughout the year, if there is a changeto any of your details please contact the school office so thatwe can update our database.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

We have had a fantastic start to the year with the vast majorityof our students returning from holidays ready to start learning.This makes a huge difference to amount of work that can becovered in classes and students should be congratulated fortheir efforts so far. It is our expectation that students maintainhigh standards and work to the best of their ability throughoutthe term. Many students are already well on the way toachieving their Summit Club Gold Cards by collecting stamps intheir diaries or by accumulating merit points in our roll marking

• Ask your student for their diary – familiarise yourselfwith our policy/procedures and check they areentering their homework ;

• Monitor that they are completing homework, assistwhere you can and contact individual teachers if youhave any concerns;

• Ask your student what they are learning in particularsubjects and have them explain what their goals inthe subject are;

• Check that your student has packed their bag with allbooks/equipment required for the day; and

• Ensure that students are getting a good night sleepso they are alert and ready to learn.

EVERY DAY COUNTS!

Our core business is teaching and learning so to that end wewill be teaching and assessing for the full term. We expect everystudent to be engaged fully in their learning and to maintainregular attendance and appropriate behaviour.

As outlined by the Department of Education, Training andEmployment, “under Queensland law, you must make sureyour child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day,every school day unless they have an acceptable reason.” Youare encouraged not to schedule holidays during school time.Missing time at the end of the school term may result in yourchild not completing assessment which may have a negativeimpact on their school achievement.

If you wish to discuss your child’s attendance, please contactthe relevant Deputy Principal for your Year Level.

Year Level CoOrdinator NewsThe Senior Students at Morayfield State High School have beenvery visible over the last four weeks as they start to hit high gearfor the start of 2015. The Year 11 students have stepped upinto the ‘Senior Years’ and the Year 12 students have checked

calendars to realise just how much time is left to them as a HighSchool student.

Assessment calendars are almost ready for distribution withdates for all due items for Semester One and students areencouraged to put these dates into their diaries. The upgradeto Office365 for their student email also allows them to shareassessment calendars with fellow students and teachers toensure they are maintaining contact with their upcomingcommitments. Students are also being encouraged by teachersto plan and develop ‘Study Timetables’ to ensure they donot fall behind with the workload and subject themselves tounnecessary stress.

There has been time for celebration though. The Year 12s wereformally ‘Inducted’ as Senior Students on Monday and the Year11 Student Leaders were there to witness the event and thenparticipate by receiving their Senior Leader Badges. 2015 looksbright for all these students and we wish them well over thecoming months.

Welcome to LANESImagine this: you walk into a buzzing classroom, ready to learn.The teacher greets you and so the lesson begins. Over the next70 minutes you are tested on your spelling and you learn how touse punctuation correctly. You read different texts and answerquestions, practising your comprehension, short response andwriting skills. As a class, you check your answers and theteacher explains how to fix any mistakes you have made. Thebell rings for the end of the day and you leave knowing how tospell three new words and how to use a semi-colon correctly.Welcome to LANES!

Literacy and Numeracy Essential Skills (LANES) classes runonce a week and focus on teaching students skills that willassist them in all subject areas. When students enter a LANESclass, ready to learn, they are provided with an opportunityto improve their spelling, punctuation and grammar, as wellas being given time to practise their reading and writing skillsin an environment in which the primary focus is to improvetheir proficiency in these areas. Students are assessed on whatthey learn in class, allowing parents and caregivers to see theirprogress.

Morayfield State High School is excited about LANES in 2015,with teachers and students seeing it as a valuable tool inbuilding and strengthening the literacy and numeracy skillsstudents need in order to succeed in their education.

The Nice Carnival is one of the largest and most colourfulcarnivals in the world. There are 15 days (and nights) of carnivalparades with decorated floats and gigantic “papier-mâché”figurines. During the Flower parade, extravagantly dressedcharacters throw hundreds of thousands of flowers into thecrowd along the Promenade des Anglais and more than athousand dancers and musicians, from around the world,perform at the carnival.

By night, the floats are illuminated for the Parade of Lights. Thetheme for the 2015 carnival is “King of Music”. It takes placefrom 13 of February and finishes on March the first.

Industrial Technology ReportThe faculty has had a great start to 2015 with all classesworking well. As always at the start of each year there is a bigpush to cover safety in workshops and all classes have beeninvolved in working through subject theory booklets. Thesesubject theory booklets also contain various exercises andactivities which assist in the schools push to improve allstudents’ literacy and numeracy skills, in particular Year 9students getting ready for their upcoming NAPLAN exams.

Last year the building and installation of our new TIG weldingbays was complete and is a very handy addition to our SeniorEngineering workshop. The process uses a non-consumabletungsten electrode that delivers the current to the welding arc.The tungsten and weld puddle are protected and cooled withan inert gas, typically argon. TIG welding is similar tooxy-acetylene welding in that you use a filler material forbuild-up or reinforcement. Student will have hands onexperience with industry standard equipment and techniques.TIG welders have the capability to weld mild steel, stainlesssteel and aluminium.

I would like to take this opportunity to also remind parents/guardians that all students are required to have leather, vinylor suede shoes as per the school uniform policy which canbe found on pages 14-17 in the student diaries. Studentswho do not have the correct footwear will not be able toparticipate in workshop classes and will be removed to anotherclass to complete theory work. To add to this all students inSenior workshop classes require safety glasses and are highlyrecommended to have hearing protection. Continual failure tobring correct safety equipment to class may result in a changeof subject. Safety glasses and hearing protection are availableto be purchased from the school uniform shop.

What Does Our School Chaplain Do?Always a big question for new families to our school or newto a school with a chaplain, we hope to clarify the role here.

Our Chaplain, Jesse Davis, is a qualified Youth Worker. He isat our school four days per week to support our students, staffand families in the following three areas:

Pastoral Care [I Matter]

Jesse provides a caring presence, listening ear and relevantsupport to students going through tough times- divorce,loneliness, grief and loss. He does this by being a link betweenstudents and outside community help and/or our schoolsupport services. Students can be referred to Jesse bythemselves, staff and/or parents for extra emotional support atany time.

Worldview/Spiritual Support [I Believe]

Children and young people often have questions aboutspirituality, ethics and the variety of human worldviews. (“Why isHe wearing that funny thing?” “Why don’t you eat meat?” “Doyou believe in Santa?” “Why don’t you celebrate Christmas?”“What is Buddhism?” etc). Jesse’s role includes providingunbiased information and support for these students who areinvited to approach him if they wish to explore these questionsfurther.

While all SU Qld chaplains are from a Christian faithbackground, they respect those who hold other beliefs andworldviews and actively encourage and teach students to beable to express their own beliefs and opinions respectfully.

Jesse is able to link families with community churches and/oryouth groups of a variety of traditions.

Jesse is not involved in Religious Education.

Community Development [I Belong]

Jesse’s role is also one of community building in our school.He conducts social support programs and models positivefriendship skills to our students. His role here is to promotea sense of belonging, connectedness and community for allstaff, parents and students. This often includes being involvedin “extra-curricular” events such as sporting carnivals andleadership days.

• To refer your child or let our chaplain know about asituation that is affecting your child emotionally at thistime, please call the school Monday to Thursday andask to speak to Jesse.
