New Year Message from CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles

The past year brought many successes to Central Philippine University. Certainly, these triumphs have strengthened our faith and have fueled us to go forward and face the future with dynamism and complete trust to our Almighty Father.

As we start this new year, we are also in the lookout for new opportunities to better this institution. More importantly, we are more focused in extending these plans so that we could participate effectively in nation building. I would like to believe that we have understood and accepted the challenge for those in the academe; that is, by providing quality education, we also impact the society or even help in changing the status quo. This is why, guided by Scientia et Fides, we try our best that all members of the Centralian community get to have the mind and the heart to succeed, to share and to serve.

As much as we would like that everything that we intend to start or finish this year be smooth sailing, we know that it will not be. Just like the past years where we have to face challenges as we realize all our goals, 2017 is no different. However, I am hopeful, that with our utmost dedication and with unwavering faith to the Lord, we will equal or surpass what we have thus far achieved.

May we be off to a good start this 2017.Happy New Year!

God bless us all!

The gift By Cyrus A. Natividad

Here is a good advocacy on education for the new year. It

reads: “Read for 20”. The advocacy is a corporate initiative launched by a major daily. It is intended to help bring back the

Filipinos’ interest in reading and learning. The younger

generation nowadays are more inclined to social media.

The decreasing habit of reading printed copy classical books,

and even fundamental references is an apt observation. Most

students are inclined to write reports and researches with the

help of the internet only. Except that it’s fast, final results may

not be as good as one that was researched on the original

books and referenced properly.

I would like to endorse the “Read for 20” advocacy because

while we can do it anytime, anywhere on the more accessible computers and cellphones - hardcopy reading for me is more

retentive. Twenty minutes of reading any printed magazine,

newspaper, books or paperback every day is what it takes to

develop interest in reading, and improving writing skills.

ooo

Last Christmas, I was reminded that we can always go back to

being a child Someone has given me a gift which I thought

was a children’s story book based on its cover. Perhaps due to

my curious religious question about the advent, I deserved the

“little” book entitled “The Expected One” by Scott James. The book satisfied my curiosity and answered the question of

some spiritual missing links.

“The Expected One”- a hard-bound with similarity to “The

Noah’s Ark” which was presented to me by my elementary

school teacher is a valuable gift. Thanks Pastor Neil!

I read the book instead of watching a film - the usual fill-in

activity at home before the clock strikes at 12 midnight. Then

the noche-buena is served and everyone enjoys the traditional

native feast.

CPU Office of Communication

relaunches Centralian Link

With the aim of connecting Centralians all over the globe, the CPU Office of Communications (OC) spearheaded by its

new director, Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, will be

relaunching The Centralian Link, the official publication and

media forum of Central Philippine University.

The online Link, initiated back in the late 1990s, was

created to publish news, events and happenings in the

university. It however underwent hibernation from 2014 to

October 2016.

Now, revisions are expected as The Centralian Link ends its

two year hiatus. The publication’s Facebook (https://

www.facebook.com/CPUCentralianLink/), website and

Twitter page (@CentralianLink) will now be actively managed, alumni subscriptions will be increased as updates

are now being made in the alumni directory to widen

audience coverage and link more Centralians all over the

world.

The Centralian Link will also be releasing weekly

newsletters, to be received by email subscriptions while

printed copies of the publication will be distributed once

every two months. /CPOST

Together with Cyrus Natividad, Media Relations & Publishing Officer, Mark Ortaliz, Webmaster and Keziah Huelar, Publishing Assistant, The Centralian Link will pursue excellence in producing quality articles that cater to the information needs and entertainment of Centralians everywhere .

a smile then escapes her lips. Music is letting her

see a vision no eyes could give her.

Katchry, also known as Alienette Colfire on social media, is a 2016 graduate of Bachelor of Arts in English of Central Philippine University, hailing from Tapaz, Capiz, this humble siren is known for her love of music and her soulful desire to share her talent with others. Now her voice is heard all over the world, Kathryn graced the stage of France Got Talent Season 11 singing the French version of “I dreamed a dream” from the famous Broadway Les Miserbles.

Her performance moved one of the judges, Helene

Segara, to tears. She received a standing ovation

from the crowd and from the judges earning her a

spot in the semifinals. Everyone was in awe of the

angelic voice coming from the 25 year old singer.

Katchry learned French to understand the song La

Vie En Rose by one of her favorite singers Edith

Piaf. Her persistence to learn made her a fluent

speaker of the language, making it easier for her to adjust in her stay in France for the duration of the

contest.

Back in 2008, Katchry auditioned in Pinoy Idol but

was not able to make it the top 12. She however

captured the attention of singer-songwriter Ogie

Alcasid, who helped her get a visa for her trip.

Alcasid sought the help of Solenn Heusaff and her

father to assist her in acquiring travel documents to

France.

Two years ago, she was invited to audition for France Got Talent but was not able to get a visa.

Now, she conquers the global stage bringing with

her the Centralian pride and spirit. Katchry’s story

is a testimony of faith and persistence. Even

without her eyesight, she is able to inspire others to

pursue their passion and dream big. With music for

eyes, Katchry’s sees a future full of beautiful notes

and melodies.

More thrills and excitement to the festivities at the FOL 2016! Among the

added excitements were the Human Parol (lantern) Contest and the

College Belen Making Contest. Thought out to be unique and newest is

the 1st Photography Contest open to all. The unique feature of the contest

allowed participants to use camera phones – a creative technological

innovation that caters to students and professionals alike.

Alumni President Dorillo, together with Festival of Lights 2016 overall

chairman Engr. Isagani Jalbuena and other alumni - members of the

Board of trustees, including former Regional Technical Director Larry

Nacionales, of the DA Region 6, Dr. Vita Basiao Gasataya and former CPU

College of Hospitality Management Dean, Dr. Pearl Suyo were

interviewed live by EMC –CPU TV near the Centennial Walkway, where

the Central Philippine University Symphonic Band was playing Christmas

tunes.

The CPU Vice President for Student Affairs Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico

welcomed the crowd in behalf of the University President Dr. Teodoro C.

Robles. Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog arrived shortly before the

switch on of lights. He also delivered a message where he emphasized the

love of God and the essence of Christmas .

The host, Miss Carmelle Frances Romero gave the go signal at exactly 7:00

in the evening. The lights were switched on as fireworks broke loose to

illuminate the sky. 111 balloons were released at the same time. The

whole campus became a sea of lights while CPU’s very own Symphonic

Band added to the spectators excitement and glee.

The countdown was exhilarating . For 15 minutes, the sky became a

canvass of lights captivating the crowd; the lights exploding in red, yellow,

blue and green. No colour of the spectrum was left behind.

The success of this year’s Festival of Lights and Music @ Central 2016 is

attributed to the cooperation of the University Administration, the CPU

Katchry Golbin brings CPU to the world!

“Lord, help me do this." The vibrant singer Katchry Golbin posted on

facebook before she delivered a touching French love song, 'Quand

on n'a que l'amour', at the French Got Talent Finals on December 13

(Wednesday, December 14 in Manila). She was voted 3rd Place

among 12 finalists.

Katchry (a.k.a. Alienette Coldfire) is one of our talented A.B. Engish

Alumni at Central Philippine University who became a finalist at the

French Got Talent search. Visually handicapped since birth,

Katchry was blessed with an unbelievably great vocal talent. She

pays tribute to CPU with her guest performances.

All prayers and support were expressed for Katchry’s final trip to

France during her performance at an alumni dinner and induction of

CPU Alumni Board in CPU on December 2. Her winning a place in

the international talent search brings Central Philippine University to

the whole nation and the world./ CAN

BY FRANCIS NEIL G. JALANDO-ON

Happy New Year! The word Year in Hebrew is Shanah. It has three meanings in the original root word: 1. Division of time; 2. To repeat, do the same; 3. To change, alter. Will this year be just a passing of time? Will this year be just a repetition? Or will this year be a year that we will change for the better? We would often hear the word change. It is so broad that the one who wants to change does not know where to start. For those who profess to be Christians, the answer is straightforward: we want to be like Jesus. Like Paul we too should say, "imitate me as I imitate Christ." If we want to pattern our lives to that of Jesus, then we need to see the pattern. Where can we see it? The Bible. If this is so, then the resolution to change and pattern our lives to that of Jesus involves our commitment to read the Bible and reflect on what is written there. The ethical question of WWJD - What Would Jesus Do - can be answered if we read and understand the Bible. If reading the Bible is not yet in your New Year’s Resolution, then please put it there and start reading. When you make a reflection, start asking questions about what God wants to change in your life through the passages that you have read. Pray for it and ask for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, you have made a commitment to change for the better. This year should not just be a passing of time nor a repetition of the last year but a commitment to change and follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Moving on By Cyrus A. Natividad

To enjoy life is to move on. Moving on requires leaving

the old attitude of regretting and procrastinating on

account of sentiments and lingering in the past.

There’s a constant awareness in most, if not all people

with regards to what they have. What they have, sometimes make them sad or depressed. And instead

of evaluating their self worth - find it easier to get

intimidated for what others have, or for what status in

life they are in.

So maybe we should not leave this issue out from the

list of new year’s resolutions. Simply put, we need to

appreciate life by living it– celebrating and enjoying its

real purpose.

So to start enjoying life by moving in 2017, `move along

with the development of people or society. This is the first step in getting a lease of life for the new year.

Connecting with people (especially our loved ones) is

the `next thing’ that helps. I remember Dr. Ellenberger

(a.k.a Nitz) and her advice to keep in touch. “Connect

with love ones, friends and `best friends forever (BFF on

Facebook). That way you will know if they are living fine,

or are getting on with some bad conditions.

`Likes’ and positive comments for them are considered

ounces of health, or maintenance pills (better than

herbals). Appreciations motivates, and reactions encourages. Of course there are limitations to

everything we do. It pays to help other people as long

as we don’t compromise or procrastinate our work and

development of ourselves. Comforting others also

improves our comfort zones.

On the other hand, do not `miss the train by being too

busy with other passengers waiting for another train to

arrive (particularly those who still prefer to take the

conventional train).

For life to be truly enjoyable, we should get into what is

suitable to us. Prayer is a vehicle to God “from whom all blessings flow”.

Spearheads Harvest

Festival in Pavia

With the aim of promoting good agricultural practices, the CPU College of Agriculture (CPUCA) and Forestry Alumni Foundation held the “Harvest Festival of Varietal Demo Plots For Different Vegetable Seeds” at the CPU Centennial Village, Aganan, Pavia, Iloilo – November 23, 2016.

According to Mr. Larry Nacionales, President of the CPU College of Agriculture Alumni Association, the event is a venue to share the different breakthroughs and developments in vegetable gardening. It is also to encourage urban dwellers to plant vegetables and other crops in their own backyard.

The event was graced by Hon. Arcadio Gorriceta, Congressman 2nd District of Iloilo as guest speaker. Cong. Gorriceta talked about Pavia being a thriving agricultural municipality and future projects under his administration that cater to the agricultural and social demands of his district.

Atty. Hansel Didulo, Asst. Secretary of the Visayas, Department of Agricultural RFO Region VI was also there to emphasize the importance of food safety, sustainability and availability. He also cited the recent accomplishments of the Department of Agriculture including increase of agricultural yield and benefits to local farmers.

For her closing remarks, Engr. Remelyn Recoter, Regional Executive Director of DA-RFO Region VI thanked all the agricultural sectors present in the event and looks forward to more projects in cooperation with the CPU College of Agriculture and Forestry Alumni Foundation.

The festival ended with a field tour in the vegetable plots and a harvest session. Participants gathered to-matoes, okras, peppers, cucumbers and other fruits and vegetables. The harvest festival is also an educa-tional experience about how important it is to have a full picture of the agricultural market before planting a commodity.

For Mr. Nacionales, the event is a reminder of why the College of Agriculture Alumni is one of the strongest alumni communities in CPU – “We regularly meet eve-ry Wednesday to discuss future projects or just to talk about what’s happening in each other’s’ lives. We defi-nitely have so much more to give back to our alumni community.”/ Keziah Huelar

THE CPU NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Christmas Party and Induction of Officers for 2017-2018 December 10, 2016 1000 Bascom Ave. San Jose CA 95124

It was a rainy day on the 10th of December but the anticipation for several weeks about the event did not deter the CPU Northern California Alumni Association family. Some had to drive three hours or more but, that too, was not a reason to miss the big event. You see, each time there is a gathering of this group, it always paints a picture of a family gathering; so eager to see each other with laughter, sharing of food and fun. Hearts overflowing with joy and love characterize each time we meet.

Our delightful Pat Desales was our master of ceremonies that day and kept the program going. The Gasacao family provided the sound system and music. Pastor Eduard Faalam gave a Christmas message. A thought provoking question he asked everyone that day was: “What gift can you give to Jesus this Christmas?” Singing was led by Ortha D. Lumanlan and Pat Desales, and Lisaer Carlo Pineda provided a special violin number. This was followed by the induction of officers for 2017-2018. Our very own FOAA VP Northwest, Lee Plagata inducted the group. After the induction, Kathy Leyble Kriewall, incoming president, gave her acceptance speech. Kathy emphasized the unity, love and respect amongst each other as describing the CPUNorCalAA family. Dear to her heart was a quote by Beth Moore, “Effectiveness depends on our connectedness.” This quote reflected several of her platform points, e.g.: a. an updated directory to be distributed to all CPUN or CalAA members; b. intentionally connect with younger alumni; and increase membership by personally being involved in connecting with other Centralians. In addition, there is a plan to have a newsletter featuring both a seasoned member and a younger alumni, to help bonds grow stronger, an on-going prayer ministry, meeting workshops, and involvements that make a difference both locally and abroad, like being a part of Operation Christmas Child or a Gift Giving Outreach to the remote places in Iloilo province to school children, or locally,

The outgoing and fabulous former president Marah Rafols Torres gave some acknowledgements, which was followed by a surprise apprecia-tion presentation to her for a “job well done”. We concluded the event with dancing, visiting, packing some “take home” and a swift clean-up. Hearts were warm, full of joy, and many will bask in the glow of such a fine time and thank God for a chance to be together as a family. It was a delightful and memorable event!
