There once was a special local cowcaed Zuri, who was kind, healthy and brave
Her milk was the creamiestin a the land!
People would travel from milesaround to her viage to get a
chance to drink some of her milk...
...For though it was creamy, there wasn’t very much
The people would compete, bringing gifts of the finest graes,
the swtest hay and the purest water…
…in the hope that they would get to taste some of Zuri’s smth milk
That’s it!I’ find a handsome husband
who wi give me lots of strong, healthy babies that wi make more milk
and kp the viage childrenfrom geing sick
…But despite having a the fd she could eat and a the water she could drink…
Zuri became very rich...
I fl like I haveto give milk topeople after
they’ve come sofar with gifts…
But there’s not even enough milk to give to a the hungry children in the viage …and it would be so nutritious!
2
Word spread quickly and sn a the local bus wanted to may Zuri. Each bu told her why they would be the best
heybeautiful!
I’m yours...
Some of them told herhow much they loved her…
…Others boasted of theirstrength, health and
fertility…
…Others sti spoke of howmuch milk their mothers
made to make them so big
Zuri didn’t know which bu to chse! She wanted her children to make lots of creamymilk for the viage children, so had to chse wisely…
3
So Zuri went to s a wise farmer caed Busara, who livedon a big shamba not so far away, to ask him for advice
Hi Busara!
Hi Zuri!
After some fresh warm milk…
I want a husband whocan help me have babies
that wi make lots of milk. How can I make sure I chse
the best bu for that?
They a lk handsomeenough and they te mehow strong they are…
You can’t tejust by lking or
asking them…
You can know howwe a bu’s children
might do by knowing aabout their family. After
a, it is a wrienin their dna

Every time you makea baby cow, half the Mama’s
and half the Baba’s DNAcome together…
…But the way itdoes this is a lile bit
dierent every time
If a Mama finds a Babathat has DNA meages to makelots of milk, their babies are
more likely to make lotsof milk t
But I don’tknow how to read DNA,
only Kiswahili…
5
Busara lked at Zuri and sawhow sad and kind she was… I was
hungry when Iwas lile
I’ te you a lile secret, Zuri.I have a friend caed Elewa, who
can read DNA with the help ofa special machine
AA… Howinteresting!
She has read the DNA of a lot ofbus and has lots of information
on their families, so we can te whichones wi have baby cows that wi
go on to make more milk...
...Perhaps Elewa and Icould help you chsewhich bu to may?
6
Zuri was delighted and they left for her viage at once
Hi Guys! My friends are going tohelp me chse who to may, but we
nd to know a about your family, andwe’ nd some of your DNA
Huh?! You’ret picky!
Our DNA?What’s wrong?
Are you scared?!
Ha! ha! Ha! ha! ha! HA!
Scared? Me?! Out ofmy way – me first!
no, Me!
my dna isthe best!
butwhat isdna?
Busara tk DNA samples from the bus, then huiedhome to send them to Elewa for her to read
S you sn! Bye Busara, huy back!
7
A month later, Busara returned...
Hi zuri!Welcome Busara!
Have some fresh milk.What’s new?
sigh
It sms thesebus are as fertileand healthy as they
say they are…
Great! Whatabout the milk?
We, I scoreda the bus using achecklist, just like
Elewa said to…
So who is topof the list?!
I don’t think the best ofthe viage bus is likely tohave children that make any
more milk than you do…

But that’snot enough!!
it sms like the meagesto make lots of milk are just notin the dna of the bus we tested
So there’snothing we
can do?
8
That’s it! Maybe it’snot a husband you nd –
just their DNA meages tomake lots of milk
Elewa knows bus from aover the world, with a kinds
of DNA meages…
You could get moresuitable DNA from an exotic
brd of bu…
...artificiay...
(months later)
…And have a crobred baby
cow!
I don’t know, Busara…At least with the localbus I wi have healthychildren. How do I knowthis with an exotic bu?
You already have the DNAmeages to kp your
children healthy…
…So we just have to hopethat your DNA meagesmix with the bu’s in the
way we want
Ok, let’sgive it a try!

Busara wrote to Elewa and toldher what they wanted to do
...And sure enough, after a lile while,Zuri had a calf that she caed Plentiful
What agreat idea…
Let's s…This bu would
probably bebest for having
children thatmake lots
of milk
His DNA contained meages to makelots of milk, but didn’t have meagesto stay healthy, just as Zuri had feared
Elewa sent the tube and that warningwith her top technician to Zuri’s viage
Zuri tk a dp breath when she sawthe technician, but it was over quickly
and didn’t hurt at a...

Thanks! You guysare welcome to visit
any time
Busara visited Zuri to congratulate her and sample some of Plentiful’s DNA,to s if she would live up to her name
Hi Zuri!What’s new?
Welcome Busara!Only gd things…
After reading Plentiful’s DNA…
Plentiful isvery likely to behealthy AND makemore milk than
you Zuri!
But, DNA is only ever half the story –the environment is important t…
For Plentiful to live up to herDNA and make a that milk, she nds
to be lked after reay we
Anyway, Elewa and I are hayto help read the DNA of anynew cows to help you kp
improving in the future
11
We arenot the same!
So Zuri and the viagechildren got to work!
They built a place forPlentiful to slp
They made sure Plentifulhad enough to drink
They grew tasty fdfor Plentiful to eat
They kept an eye onPlentiful if she got i…
…And got the viagers togive her medicine if nded
To kp track of what workedand what didn’t…
…Zuri wrote everything down –what they gave her to eat and drink, and what haened when she got sick
Zuri slowly worked out that what was best for Zuri…
…Wasn’t always best for acrobrd like Plentiful
12
Zuri was so hay to s that there was finay enough milkto give to the viage children
Plentiful grew up into a beautiful
strong cow…
…And when she wasold enough, Plentiful
fe in love with a localcrobred bu at the
top of Busara’s list
They had many healthycalves together…
To Busara, Our family x x x
…and Plentiful made buckets ofrich, creamy milk
13
Brding withcrobred bus wi
kp a gd mix of milkand le ine
The children loved Zuri, her daughterand their milk
Now they were no longer hungry, the viage children grew up
strong and clever
Busara often visited and taught them how to kp improving cows in the future
Just like if you kp diluting fruit juice with water, DNA meages can get lostover time, so it's important to kp using crobrds with each generation
Only brding with localbus wi mean le milk
but le ine
Only brding with exoticbus wi mean more milk
but more ine
14
Zuri and her viage became famous and slowly their farming methodsspread throughout the land
When the viage children grew up,they helped Zuri and Plentiful
lk after their growing family
With the viagers’ help, Zuri’sfamily continued to be ableto fd the viage children
their nutritious milk
The viage prospered from their wonderful cows…
END15
DNA was first read in 1977. The first DNA sequence of a cowto be read was finished in 2009
Reading the complete DNA sequenceof a cow for the first time
tk more than 300 scientistsin 25 countries 6 years!
The complete DNAsequence of a cowcontains roughly3 biion leers!
Now the complete DNA sequenceof a cow can be read in le than24 hours, but it sti takes a while
to understand what it means
There are nowmore than 2,500complete cowDNA sequences!
Mt Zuri the cow, who makes the creamiest milk in a the land...
but can she find a way to make enough milk to fd a the viage
children? Maybe the power of genetics can help...
