1. INT. BOXING ARENA

Boxing crowd cheering.

Two bloodied boxers, one white one black, at the corners in

the ring. Bell sounds.

Boxers size each other up exhaustedly. Referee gives signal to

begin fight.

COMMENTATOR

Start of round nine! The two have

beaten the hell out of each other!

How long will this match last!?

Black boxer throws a few quick jabs.

White boxer, the obvious more exhausted one, keeps blocking

and retreating.

COMMENTATOR

Looks like MBENGAs in control!

MIRKOVIC is curling up! You cant

beat anyone if you dont strike! You

can never, ever win a match like

that! You got to start throwing

punches if youre gonna bring home

the belt OH MY GARD(god)!!! OH MYGARD!!! Mirkos down! Mirkos

down!!!

Commentator shouts until his voice crackles as Mbenga beats

Mirkovic to the ground.

Referee starting counting.

REFEREE

One! Two!

Close up of Mirkovics bruised face.

COMMENTATOR

Is this the way Mirko wants his ca-

reer to end!!?

REFEREE

Three! Four!

COMMENTATOR

to end!!?

Crowd starts to count with the referee.

Five! Six! Seven!

COMMENTATOR

Three seconds for Mbenga to take the

belt!!!

CROWD AND REFEREE AND COMMENTATOR

Seven! Eight!

Mirkovic pushes his palms against the mat.

CROWD AND REFEREE AND COMMENTATOR

Nine!

Mirkovic pushes himself hard away from the mat to get himself

up. Grabs and leans onto the ropes.

Crowd cheers. Referee frantically signals to the bell hitter

that it is not over.

COMMENTATOR

Its not over!!! Its not over!!!

Its!!! Not!!! Ovahhh!!!!

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Executive in his chair holding and reading a thin stack of pa-

pers. Another thicker stack on the desk.

Does not look too happy. Takes the front page and places onto

the thick stack on the desk.

Flips to see how much has he got left yet to read. Places the

stack that he is holding onto the desk.

EXECUTIVE (IN A LOW VOICE)

Theres not enough punch to it.

DOUG

You mean......?

EXECUTIVE

Everything.

DOUG

Erm......okay. So er...I...show you

another draft in a few days?

EXECUTIVE

Deadlines in five days time. Ill

appreciate if you can show me one in

two days time.

DOUG

Erm......no problem! Cool!

Executive keeps his stern stance. Refuse to be lightened up.

EXECUTIVESee you then.

DOUG

See you!

Doug leaves the room.

2. INT. DOUGS APARTMENT - NIGHT

Doug comes in, throw his backpack on the floor, remove his

shoes. Turns on the the orange wall light. Goes straight to

his desk. Posters of action heroes on wall.

Goes to his PC and turns it on. Sound of hard disk rotating

and fans spinning from the cpu. Waits. Windows startup

sounds. Waits for a while more. Goes online. Searches for box-

ing movies. Comes across the Rocky movies. Then the Rambo mov-

ies.

DOUG

Hmm. More punch. More punches. Big-

ger punches. More blood.

Watches more violent movie clips.

INT. DOUGS APARTMENT - DAY

Wakes up on his bed. Reaches for his unactivated alarm clock.

Sees what time is it and puts it back.

We see the time, almost noon. Lazily gets out of bed and into

the shower.

Dilly-dallies. Goes to the kitchen cabinet. Grabs and opens a

can of mushroom soup and heats it over the small electric

stove.

Takes a few slices of bread. Sits at his desk to eat.

Finishes eating. Pushes dishes aside. Turn on his computer.

Face still sleepy. Yawns. PC takes long time to boot. Still

waiting. Looks at clock. We hear the Windows startup sound.

Doug is still waiting.

Finally PC is ready to be used. Doug starts typing.

INT. BOXING ARENA

Close Up of Mirko punching Mbenga in Slo-mo.

INT. DOUGD APARTMENT - DAY

Doug typing. Face still looks sleepy.

INT. BOXING ARENA

Slo-mo of Mirko throws an uppercut to Mbengas chin. Mbengas

mouth guard flew out.

COMMENTATOR

Mirko all over Benga!


Doug still typing.

INT. BOXING ARENA

COMMENTATOR

Delivers the finishing blow!!!

Slo-mo. Mirko, with a vicious face, throws a big right hook,

until it almost reach the face.

EXT. STUDIO BUILDING - DAY

Entrance of studio building. (establishing shot)

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Executive (in exact same position and shot from previous

scene) holds script in hands. Face with a little frown. Counts

the remaining pages, drops the stack on the desk.

Executive looks at Doug, breathes out heavily, and shakes his

head.

Screen Wipe.

3. INT. DOUGS APARTMENT - DAY

Doug comes in. Frowns. Presses ON button on PC. Sits in

front of PC. Stares at monitor fiercely for a few seconds.

Goes out of screen. Comes back with two packs of chips and a

can of beer. Opens beer can and pack of chips.

The windows startup sound. Still waiting. Does a few mouse

clicks and types.

Zoom in to Dougs eyes. Fire in the eyes.

INT. BOXING ARENA

(All in slomo)

Ultra slo-mo of Mirkos punch reaching Mbengas face.

Echoes of the sound of punch. Silent except for sound of

punches. More sweat, more blood.

LONG SHOT of crowd standing up. Lens flares moves across

Mbengas face.

Mirko pulls back fist for another blow.

Fist moves across screen, camera pans, following fist.

Fist lands onto Mbengas teeth, broken teeth flies out. Blood

spills at camera.

Mirko swings fist all the way back. Roars. Eyes wide open.

Spills saliva from his wide-open mouth. Fist literally on

fire.

Throws the finishing blow.

Mbenga falls.

Referee intercepts fight and signals it is over.

COMMENTATOR

Its over!!! Its Over!!! The new

middleweight champion!!!

Crowd cheers on its feet.

Referee attends to Mbenga.

Mirko pushes referee away. Launches a series of punches on the

defenseless Mbenga. Crowd roars even louder.

COMMENTATOR

Whats Mirko doing!!? Whats he do-

ing!!?

Referee intervenes but got punched.

COMMENTATOR

This is crazy!!! Get the security!!1Get the security!!!

Oh yea by the way. Just to remind

you. You got hired for publicity

reasons, just because the last movie

you wrote happens to be well-

directed.

Doug stands still for a moment, and turns away.

EXECUTIVE

You got one last day to keep your

job.

Sound of door slams close.

4. INT. DOUGS BLOCK - DAY

Doug walks up the stairs. Looks stressed.


Opens door. Two letters on the floor. Opens letter. Outstand-

ing bills.

Places letters gently on desk with hands trembling. Drops back

pack on floor. Goes out.

EXT. STREET - DAY

Grabs a beer from the fridge of a convenient store. Pays. Went

out of store. Breaks can. Drinks. Oblivious.

Holds head up to drink as he walks, knocks onto someone.

DOUG

Shit!

Doug turns furiously and stares at the guy, finds the guy

staring at him too.

Muscular guy, shades, bald, tight black t-shirt and jeans,

with a hot girl behind him.

Looks at his right sleeve. Beer foam on it. Guy struts towards

Doug. Doug intimidated.

DOUG

S...sorry man.

Doug backs down a little. Guy not backing down.

MUSCULAR GUY

just like that?

DOUG

Look big fella. Ive already apolo-

gized. What else do you want? Wo-hou. I know what you want. How about

this!?

Doug throws a punch at Guy. Guy dodges to the side, brings

down Doug with a ferocious fist.

Small crowd around the scene. Doug lies motionless on the

pavement.

Guy stares for while and leaves with his girl. Crowd dis-

perses.

One old man slaps Doug awake and helps him up.

OLD MAN

Come on. Lets clean up the mess on

your face.

Old man supports the groggy Doug as they walk.

INT. OLD MANS HOUSE - DAY

Doug sits on sofa. Old man goes to kitchen, comes back with a

first aid kit.

Prepares ointment and bandage. Cleans Dougs wounds, bandages

it up.

OLD MAN

Done.

Old man keeps his kit.

Doug looks around living room. Sees Punching bag, speed bag,

some boxing gloves lying on a corner. A few trophies on the

shelf.

OLD MAN

You cant throw a punch like that,

unless you wanna get punched.

DOUG

......What dyou mean?

OLD MAN

You......nah just dont fight and

youll be fine. Anyway you should

DOUG

OLD MAN

DOUG

Come on. Im writing a screenplayactually. About boxing stuff.

Old man pauses, looks at Doug.

OLD MAN

Alright. Just one thing. Just one.

DOUG

Yeah! Youre the man!

Old man opens a cabinet, brings out a punching mitt. Wears it,holds it at shoulder level to his right.

OLD MAN

Punch.

Doug punches the mitt.

OLD MAN

With all your force.

Doug throws the strongest punch he can. Hits mitt but inaccu-rate.

OLD MAN

Again. Harder.

Doug stabilizes himself. Swings all the way back, throws his

entire body weight into the punch.

DOUG

RRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!

Old man pulls away the mitt. Guys whole body follows through

his punch, loses stability. Old man pushes Doug lightly from

the side. Doug tumbles onto the floor.

What the!!!

Old man keeps his mitt.

DOUGHey!!! Whatchya trying to......

OLD MAN

What have you learnt?

Doug stood in silence. Holds back his anger.

DOUG

Th...that...you...I dunno man.

OLD MAN

Think.

DOUG

That...I suck so I shouldnt even

touch boxing?

OLD MAN

Wrong.

Doug tries hard to think. Scratches his head. Gestures that he

cant think of one.

OLD MAN

Over-committing may seem more power-

ful, but loses accuracy and stabil-

ity. When you miss you open up your-

self for attacks.

Doug stood still in deep thought.

OLD MAN

When you attack leave some slack for

yourself so that if you miss, you

can easily switch to another move.

Gives you flexibility to do A LOT of

different Punches in the same amount

of time. Dont ALWAYS go ALL OUT.

Young people nowadays......

Old man speaks as he shakes his head and packs his things.

Doug still standing still.

OLD MAN

You really got to go right now.

Flashback of his brother getting the blow that killed him.

REFEREE

Six!

Mirkos arms move, palms presses on the mat. Flashback ofMirko promising his brother at the hospital that he will bring

back the gold.

REFEREE + CROWD

Seven!

Mirko pushes his torso up.

REFEREE + CROWD

Eight! Nine!

Mirko pushes himself up on his feet. Very Groggy. Referee sig-

nals to Bell ringer that its not over.

COMMENTATOR

Not over!!! NOT! OVER!!! Mbenga

still has the upper hand! Will

Mbenga finish this!!! Will he!!?

Referee makes sure Mirko is fit enough to continue. Signals

fight to continue.

Mbenga throws a few jabs. Mirko retreats.

Mbenga keeps on pressing. Mirko throws a quick jab, Mbenga re-

treats a step.

Mirko puts his hands down, leaving himself open for any at-

tack.

Mbenga sees the opportunity, throws a punch that commits his

entire body weight to finish Mirko off.

Mirko dodges, Mbenga loses balance.

Mirko thrusts his fist right into Mbengas head from the side.

Mbenga falls. Crowd cheers. Cheers are loud enough to cover

referees counting.

COMMENTATOR

What a move!!! What a move!!! Smart

move by Mirko!!! OH MY GARD!!! OH MY

GARD!!! This is going down as the

highlight reel of the year!!! What

an incredible move!!!

REFEREE

Eight! Nine! Ten!!!

COMMENTATOR

OH MY GARD!!! The new world heavy-

weight champion of the world!!!!!

Bell rings. Crowd raptures.

FEMALE ANNOUNCER

And the new world heavyweight cham-

pion, Darko......Mirkovic!!!!!

Referee pulls up Mirkos arms in victory. Hands him the cham-

pionship belt.

Exhausted Mirko drops onto the mat.

Clutches belt onto his chest. Tears flow out. Points to the

sky.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Executive reading the script.

Looks up at Doug. Bruised face with bandage and terribly dark

eye rings.

Continues reading, until the very last page. Places last page

gently onto the stack on the desk.

Looks at the pathetic look-ing Doug. Smiles to Doug. Leans

back in his chair.

Doug smiles back.

END.
