This year the Reno Jazz Orchestra is celebrating our 20th Anniversary of keeping jazz alive and vibrant in Northern Nevada.
To meet the continued population growth and to provide more cultural and educational opportunities to our community, this is the time to expand and enrich RJO’s performance and educational programs. Every “flavor” of American music from country to jazz has roots in the blues heard even today. The RJO promises a “tour de Force” performance of the many shades of blue, touching a variety of music styles.
Joining the RJO will be guest vocalists Trey Stone, Pat Esters, Carolyn Dolan, Lori Johnson, David Wells. Trey was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2015 and if you have heard him sing and play guitar you know why. His credits are extensive and has shared the stage with the RJO on several occasions. Pat, Lori, and David have also performed with us on our productions of “The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess”, and last year’s well received “A Gospel Christmas”.
Expect to hear the blues how it began, just guitar and voice. But, of course that is just the start as we explore the great big band interpretations of the blues by jazz greats Count Basie and Duke Ellington. From there it is off to the world of rock, funk, rhythm and blues, and hey how about a little country.
The Reno Jazz Orchestra is an eighteen-piece big band dedicated to keeping big band jazz vibrant and alive in northern Nevada. As a 501-c3 non-profit we do this through our performances throughout the year and our jazz education programs serving Washoe County schools. You can learn more about us by visiting our website www.renojazzorchestra.org .
