Optional Scripture Readingbased on Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17, John 6:1-14

Suggest pianist underscore the reading with soft playing in the key of D, perhaps anthem excerpts.

Narrator: Large crowds of people followed Jesus wherever he went. Many wondered if Jesus was God’s promised Messiah or perhaps a prophet. They were curious to hear what Jesus said. Others had heard amazing stories of Jesus and hoped to see a miracle or be healed. There were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his disciples hardly had any time to eat, talk or rest. So he said to them,

Jesus: Let us slip away by boat and go to a remote place where we can get some rest.

Narrator: So they quietly got in a boat by themselves and headed across Lake Galilee.But the crowds learned about it and followed Jesus by foot along the shore, growing larger and larger as news spread from town to town. When Jesus landed, there were thousands of people waiting for him. He had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So Jesus welcomed them, taught them about the kingdom of God, and healed the sick. As evening approached, his twelve disciples came to Jesus and said,

Disciple 1: Lord, this is a faraway place and it is already very late. Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding villages and buy food.

Narrator: But Jesus said,

Jesus: They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.

Disciple 2: But Lord, it would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough food for each person to have even a bite. Do you want us to spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?

Disciple 3: Jesus, I found a boy with five small barley loaves of bread and two small fish, but that couldn’t possibly feed this crowd. There are more than five thousand people gathered here.

Jesus: Bring the fish and loaves of bread to me and have the people sit down in groups on the green grass.

Narrator: Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven in prayer, Jesus gave thanks. Then he broke the bread and fish into pieces, gave them to his disciples, and his disciples gave them to the people. Everyone ate until they were satisfied.

Jesus: Now gather the pieces that were not eaten. I want nothing to be wasted.

Narrator: So the disciples did as Jesus said and filled twelve large baskets with the broken pieces that were left over. It was a miracle! Jesus provided more than enough.
