This lecture describes a theorecal framework for the behavioural sciences that holds high promise for theory-driven researchand design in Human-Computer Interacon. The framework is designed to tackle the adapve, ecological, and bounded natureof human behaviour. It is designed to help sciensts and praconers reason about why people choose to behave as they do andto explain which strategies people choose in response to ulity, ecology, and cognive informaon processing mechanisms. Akey idea is that people choose strategies so as to maximise ulity given constraints. The framework is illustrated with a numberof examples including poinng, multasking, skim-reading, online purchasing, Signal Detecon Theory and diagnosis, and theinuence of reputaon on purchasing decisions. Importantly, these examples span from perceptual/motor coordinaon, throughcognion to social interacon. Finally, the lecture discusses the challenging idea that people seek to nd opmal strategies andalso discusses the implicaons for behavioral invesgaon in HCI.
