What is the CELDT?¿ Qué es el CELDT?

CaliforniaEnglish LanguageDevelopment Test / Prueba para medir el desarrollo del Ingles en California

It is a test given every year to students who have been identified as English Learners. The purpose of the test is to see how well they know English. It is also used to monitor growth from year to year.

Es una prueba que se les da todos los estudiantes todos los años identificados como estudiantes de Inglés. El propósito del examen es ver que tan bien saben el Inglés. También se le usa para ver el crecimiento de año a año.

Why was my student identified?¿Por qué fue identificado mi estudiante?

When parents register their children for school, they fill out a home language survey. / Cuando los padres matriculan en la escuela a sus niños, ellos llenan una encuesta del idioma del hogar.

If the answer to any of the first three questions is another language other than English, then the process of identification begins. / Si la respuesta a cualquiera de las tres primeras preguntas es otro idioma que el Inglés, entonces empieza el proceso de identificación .

The child has to take the CELDT test to confirm that he/she is an English Learner. / El niño tiene que tomar el examen CELDT para confirmar que el/ella es un estudiante de Inglés.

We call English Learner students Els Nosotros llamamos EL a los estudiantes de Ingles

Who has to take it? ¿Quienes tienen que tomarlo?

Only English Learners take the test from kindergarten through 12th grade. /Solo los estudiantes de Inglés toman el examen desde Kindergarten hasta el grado 12.

They take it only once a year, but they take it every year that they are an EL. / Ellos solo lo toman una vez al año, pero lo toman cada año que son EL.

If they are a student returning to the district, they take it at the beginning of the school year during the annual testing window. (July- October) /Si un estudiante regresa al distrito, le toman el examen al comienzo del año escolar durante el espacio de exámenes (Julio-Octubre)

If they are new to the district, EL students must take it within 30 calendar days of enrollment. / Si son nuevos en el distrito, los estudiantes EL han de tomarlo durante los primeros 30 días de ser matriculados.

Every public school in California is required by state law to administer the CELDT to all EL students. /A

What is on the test?Que hay en el examen?

The test covers four parts of learning a new language.

These four parts are called domains. El examen consta de cuatro partes en el aprendizaje de un nuevo idioma. A estas cuatro partes se les llaman dominios.

How is the test scored?¿Como se califica el examen?

Each of the four sections or domains of the test get scored and a level is assigned to each domain. /Cada

The five proficiency levels are:1= Beginning / Inicial 2=Early Intermediate/ Pre intermedio

Student may be new to the country or new to school/Puede ser un estudiante nuevo en el país o escuela.

Teachers will have to use strategies or special ways to teach so that students understand what they see and hear in English. / Los maestros tendrán que usar estrategias o formas especiales de enseñanza para que los estudiantes entiendan lo que ven y escuchan en inglés.

Student can speak English in small phrases, and they still make errors. / Los estudiantes pueden hablar Inglés en pequeñas frases, y todavía cometen errores.

They can write simple words or phrases./ Pueden escribir palabras o frases simples.

Teachers will use many of the same strategies to help students make connections to what they are learning./ Los maestros usaran muchas estrategias similares para ayudar a que los estudiantes hagan la conexión a lo que están aprendiendo.

Students continue to make some errors that may interfere with communication./ Los estudiantes siguen cometiendo algunos errores que pueden interferir con la comunicación.

To many people, they may seem to be fluent English speakers. / Para muchas personas, ellos hablan el Inglés con fluidez.

How much growth should my child grow in a year?

Generally, growing about a level a year is good. A child moving from beginning up make take a little longer. It is not uncommon to be an early intermediate student (2) or an intermediate student (3) for two years. /Generalmente, un nivel decrecimiento por año es bueno. Un niño que se mueve de inicial para arriba le toma mas tiempo. No es raro ver un estudiante pre intermedio (2) o un intermedio (3) por un lapso de dos años.

If a student spends more than two years in any one level, we want to explore what might be an issue. What more can we do in class? When a student scores in these levels, they may be considered for reclassification.

When an EL student is reclassified, that means that the student no longer needs language support. / Cuando un estudiante EL es reclasificado, significa que ya no necesita el apoyo en el idioma.
