PARADISE JAM 2017

• The Orange hit the road for the first time in the 2017-18 season as ‘Cuse travels to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Paradise Jam. The Jam was originally scheduled to occur in the U.S. Virgin Islands but due to the damage brought on by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, was relocated to Washington, D.C.

• Syracuse will square-off with three opponents over three days while in Washington, D.C. The Orange open the tournament on Thanksgiving Day in an 11 a.m. tip against Wisconsin. Friday’s game features the Vanderbilt Commodores and a 3:30 p.m. start time for the Orange. ‘Cuse closes out the tournment on Saturday when they it faces Paradise Jam host, George Washington, in a 3:30 p.m. game.

• This will be the first ever meeting between the Orange and the Badgers in the school’s 46-year history. Wisconsin is 2-1 on the season, most recently coming off a 77-74 victory over Southern. Five Badgers are averaging double-digit figures this season including senior Cayla McMorris (13.3 pts/game), who has started every game for Wisconsin this year.

• Syracuse and Vanderbilt have butted heads three times in the past, once in Nashville, once in Syracuse and once at a neutral location in Hanover, N.H. Vandy holds the 3-0 all-time series advantage with the most recent meeting resulting in a 61-52 victory for the Commodores back in 2004. The first contest between the schools, in 1983, went to overtime with Vandy edging the Orange 89-82 after 45 minutes of action. The Commodores are still seeking their first win of the season, having dropped their first four contests of the year.

• Like the Commodores, Syracuse and George Washington have a three meetings under their belts with the Colonials leading the all-time series 2-1. The Orange came out on top,74-71, in the most recent outing just last season when the teams squared-off in the Gulf Coast showcase. The Colonials sit at 2-2 on the season but will carry a two-game win streak into the tournament.

LAST TIME OUT

• The Orange remained one of seven undefeated teams in the ACC when they bested Hartford 75-63, Monday morning at the Carrier Dome on School Day. Syracuse hosted over 5,000 local grammar school students at the Dome. Sophomore Tiana Mangakahia notched her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists in the contest.

• The Orange had at least three players score in double-digits for the third consecutive game. Tiana Mangakahia paced the Orange with 17 points while Gabrielle Cooper (15), Miranda Drummond (13) and Isis Young (12) added to Syracuse’s point total.

• Miranda Drummond not only tallied her first double-double of the season (13 points, 10 rebounds) but she also tied her career-high for steals with three against the Hawks. The forward has scored 10+ points in every game for the Orange this season.

‘CUSE IN THE JAM

• For the second time in five seasons, Syracuse will participate in the Paradise Jam. The Orange won the Reef Division of the tournament back in 2013, defeating Texas, Memphis and No. 12/11 Texas A&M to claim the title. Brianna Butler (‘17) averaged 23.3 points per game to earn Paradise Jam MVP accolades.

ORANGE AT THE TOP

• Two games into the season, Syracuse already ranks among the top teams in the nation in several key categories. As a team, the Orange rank tied for eighth in the country in offensive rebounds per game (21) and tied for sixth in the nation in total rebounds per game (52.00).

• Syracuse is tied for 19th (fourth in the ACC) in turnovers forced at 25.50 per game, a key component of the Orange system that emphasizes creating opportunities and maximizing points per possession.

• Individually, Tiana Mangakahia represents the Orange in the national rankings, coming in tied for second in the country for assists per game, averaging 10.0 each outing. The Australia native is the only Division I women’s basketball athlete to record three consecutive double-digit outings this season.

• Freshman Digna Strautmane paces the ACC and ranks tied for 16th in blocked shots, averaging 3.33 per game.

ORANGE IN THE A.M.

• Dating back to 2000, the Orange have played in seven games that tipped off before 12 p.m. EST. In those seven games, Syracuse has posted a record of 4-3, most recently tallying a 75-63 win over Hartford on School Day on Monday.

• Three of the seven morning tips have come during the ACC Tournament, where ‘Cuse topped No. 13 Clemson in 2014 but faced defeat against No. 4 North Carolina State and Wake Forest in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

• The Orange have played one NCAA Tournament game that tipped in the a.m. hours back in 2013 when they fell to Creighton 61-56.

• Technically, ‘Cuse has played in three more morning match-ups, participating in the Wahine Classic in 2003. However, these games were played prior to 12 p.m. on HST, which would have been 5 p.m. EST. In those games, the Orange posted a 102 record.

RETURNING ORANGE

• The Syracuse women’s basketball program made history in 2015-16 when it advanced to the NCAA Tournament final. This season’s squad only has two holdovers from that year’s team, junior guards Brandi Fowler and Abby Grant.

• The Orange are tasked with replaced four starters from the 2016-17 campaign, including All-American guards Alexis Peterson and Brittney Sykes. In fact, ‘Cuse will have to replace 82.85 percent of its scoring from a season ago. America’s leading scoring back-court, Peterson and Sykes, combined for 42.6 points per contest.

• Abby Grant appeared in 31 games during the 2016-17 season, which led all Orange reserves. She posted a career-best nine points against Coppin State and made the first start of her college career against Duke on Feb. 10.

• Gabrielle Cooper is the lone returning starter for the Orange from the 2016-17 campaign. The sophomore started every game for the Orange last season and averaged 9.3 points per game, good for fourth best on the team. Cooper set the freshman single-season 3-point field goal record for the Orange, knocking down 81 3-point field goals.

• Brandi Fowler, the only other holdover from the Tournament final team, appeared in two games for the Orange last season. She recorded her first career assist against Coppin State.

NEW TO THE PROGRAM

• The Orange put four members of the team on the court for the first time as Jasmine Nwajei, Miranda Drummond, Isis Young and Raven Fox all sat out during the 2016-17 season due to transfer regulations.

• Nwajei comes to Syracuse from Wagner, where she set the program record for points scored at 2,039 during her three seasons there. Fox and Young both transferred from the sunny state of Florida where they played for Gulf Coast State College and the University of Florida, respectively. Drummond joins Syracuse from St. Bonaventure, where she recorded 21 double-digit games for the Bonnies.

• The Orange brought in two five-start recruits, Amaya Finklea-Guity and Digna Stratumane, and the country’s top junior college point guard, sophomore Tiana Mangakahia in the class of 2017-18.

• The three newcomers have made a significant impact for the Orange thus far with all three starting both games for Syracuse.

12th Overall Season12th Season at SyracuseSt. Mary’s (Md.) ‘93

Head coach Quentin Hillsman has transformed the Syracuse University women’s basketball program into a national championship contender. Hillsman took over a program that went 28-55 in the three seasons prior to his appointment and has since guided the Orange to unprecedented heights.

In his 11 seasons at the helm, Syracuse boasts an impressive résumé, which includes 10 consecutive postseason appearances, six trips to the NCAA Tournament, 12 all-conference selections, four All-Americans, and four WNBA Draft picks. Under Hillsman, the Orange own a 241-127 overall record, averaging more than 21 victories per season. Hillsman is the all-time winningest coach in school history.

The 2015-16 campaign put Syracuse on the national map, like never before. The Orange advanced to its first Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four, and national final in their history. SU set program records with five wins against nationally ranked foes, 13 conference victories, 23 regular-season wins, and 30 overall victories. Following its run to the national final, Syracuse was ranked third in the final USA Today Coaches Poll.

Hillsman wasted no time making an impact as the head coach of the Orange program. In only his second season in 2007-08, he guided Syracuse to a 22-9 overall record and its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history. SU climbed into the national rankings for the first time in history, checking in as high as No. 21 in the country in the Associated Press Poll. Hillsman was recognized as the 2008 BIG EAST Coach of the Year.

Hillsman has built a strong reputation as one of the top recruiters in women’s collegiate basketball. 10 of the past 11 recruiting classes have been touted as top-25 classes nationally by the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. In addition, the school’s first four McDonald’s All-Americans have all been recruited and played under Hillsman.

A native of Suitland, Md., Hillsman graduated from St. Mary’s College (Md.) in 1993 after a standout playing career with the Seahawks. He led the squad to two Capital Athletic Conference championships and one conference tournament title, earning all-conference accolades and setting the school’s single-game and single-season assist records. Hillsman studied sport management at the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala. from 1994-96, as well.

He, his wife, Shandrist, and their sons, Kyan and Harlem, reside in Jamesville.
