Description

The ACCESS Orientation Program is for first time freshman who have been accepted for admission to Morgan State University for the Fall 2018 semester. The program provides the opportunity for students to become prepared for their college classes and campus life. It increases their chances of a smooth transition from high school to college. Morgan State University recognizes that the freshman year is a challenge for all new students. Participation in this program provides activities and interactions with faculty, professional staff and classmates, which will help students, have a successful first year.

Cost When you have completed the admission process, complete the online registration form and submit the $250 payment as soon as possible but no later than May 11, 2018. Students will be scheduled for each session on a “first come, first served” basis. Please note that if Maryland students attend the August session, they will be charged a late fee of $100 in addition to $250 ($350 Total Fee).

Description The ASCEND Summer Research Institute (SRI) will formally introduce students to health topics and disciplines pertinent to health research, with the goal of implementing critical thinking, principles of scientific investigation, and proposal writing. The SRI is an eight-week program. We expect to enroll 30 Morgan State University students each year into the SRI. Students will participate in a series of innovative seminars and workshops that will provide them with: 1. An overview of health and biomedical disciplines. 2. Training in the scientific method and basic research methodology. 3. Skills for developing a team-based research proposal. 4. Field trips and visits to public health sites and clinics. 5. Exposure to a variety of different health-related research projects and environments. Activities will be designed to foster collaborative learning and engagement and peer-to-peer learning. Students will work in teams of five students (6 teams) and will be encouraged to adopt an "each one, teach one" attitude.

Description The Baltimore MUREP Aerospace Academy (MAA) at Morgan State University is designed to improve STEM literacy by engaging students, teachers and family members; by utilizing SEMAA developed curriculum enhancement activities that are aligned to National STEM Standards and by the integration of emerging technologies. The goals of Baltimore MAA (BMAA) are to; Inspire a more diverse student population to pursue careers in STEM-related fields; Engage students, parents/adult family members and teachers by incorporating emerging technologies; Educate students using rigorous STEM curricula, designed and implemented by NASA. The three core components of Baltimore MAA are; Hands-on, Inquiry-Based K-12 STEM curricula; Aerospace Education Laboratory (AEL) and Family Involvement Forum. In BMAA at Morgan State University, students meet during school, after school, or on Saturday mornings to engage in hands-on, interactive learning sessions that are specifically designed for each grade level. BMAA also provide STEM Professional Development for both in-service and pre-service teachers in all types of K-12 schools (public and private). The Baltimore MAA project at Morgan State University is FREE and open to ALL Maryland students in grades K-12 and their parents. During the academic year, classes meet nine (9) consecutive Saturdays for fall, winter and spring sessions and in summer, there are four (4) one-week sessions when classes meet Monday through Friday. All classes are conducted in the Science Complex from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the school year and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during the summer.

Description The CASA Academy is an alternative admissions program sponsored by the Center for Academic Success and Achievement at Morgan State University. Transitioning high school students who have applied to Morgan State University, but did not meet the requirements for regular admission are referred to the Center and invited to apply to the summer program. We accept a maximum of 300 applicants for each summer cohort, based on selective application process. All participants who successfully complete the program are guaranteed admission to the University for the subsequent fall semester. The CASA Academy program is designed to ease the transition from high school to college for students whose academic profile and performance suggest the need for early intervention to improve their potential for success in college. Upon acceptance to the Academy, participants must enroll and successfully complete (earn a grade of C or better) a sequence of three non-credit courses designed to strengthen the student's background in English, mathematics, and reading comprehension and vocabulary development. Students will also be introduced to a strengths-based orientation seminar designed to help build students' awareness of their natural talents. The CASA Academy is an academically intense and rigorous program. It is offered for a six- week period during the summer. Courses are held Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Additional supplemental instruction, as well as academic, personal, and leadership development seminars are held in the evenings between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Participants' primary purpose and goal of participating in the CASA Academy is to improve their skill development in the identified core areas in order to gain admission to the University. Students in the CASA Academy must agree to meet the following standards:

• Successfully complete all CASA Academy courses with a grade of C or better

• Attend all scheduled CASA Academic classes and sponsored activities

• Participate in all mandatory seminars, workshops, activities, etc.

• Adhere to the University's Code of Student Conduct

• Adhere to the CASA Academy Code of Student Conduct

Description The National Career Academy (NCA) will bring together INROADS College Links scholars grades 9-12 for a multiple day training conference. Scholars will participate in workshops and other learning activities that will allow them to develop critical soft skills and the technical knowledge needed to successfully fulfill their educational and career goals. NCA also includes the Hack<It> Upstart Powered by STEMBoard and INROADS, which is a coding and pitch competition.

Description KSAC is a six-week program for children (k-12) which offers the opportunity to experience Intensive Enrichment Curriculum which prepare children for the next academic year and ultimately careers in STEM disciplines. The program is specifically designed to enhance their Academic, Social and Leadership capability and development. Students are daily equipped with courses that challenge their curious minds. They are engaged with activities that foster learning in Creative speaking, Effective writing in Science, Mathematics and STEM discipline generally. The program provides individualized academic development at a learning pace tailored towards the need of each child. The style of learning is nurturing and student centered to encourage knowledge acquisition through enquiry based approach, recognition and utilization of students’ talents for better academic success.

the transportation industry. The program features four weeks of field trips, hands-on projects, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. The curriculum also features PSAT prep and activities that promote self-awareness. Students receive a full scholarship that covers the entire cost of attending the program, including all lab fees and field trips. Lunch is provided daily. In addition, each participant receives a $150 stipend upon completion of the program.

Age Range Applicants must be entering 7th, 8th, and, 9th grade for the 2018-2019 school year.

Our Summer Band Institute provides students with opportunities to interact with the musicians who comprise the music faculty at Morgan State University, and our selected guest clinicians. Participation in the Summer Band Institute provides performance experiences in multiple venues, and offers a wide spectrum of musical training in music theory, chamber music, jazz and symphonic bands. The program features four weeks of exciting field trips, hands-on projects, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. STI is “Free”. Students receive a full scholarship that covers the entire cost of attending the program, including all lab fees, field trips. Lunch and bus passes are also provided daily. Start and End Date July 16, 2018- July 27, 2018 Description The Teacher Transportation Institute (TTI) at Morgan State University

will award teachers 6 CEUs (4AUs). The TTI will connect middle and high school STEM teachers with higher education and transportation professionals. TTI will provide teachers with knowledge to prepare students to be successful in post-secondary education. TTI participants will discuss what STEM is and its importance to careers in transportation and related fields. The program will engage the teachers in hands-on, inquiry-based lessons that will include experiments, engineering, and technology. The teachers will visit transportation and related sites. They will gain insights into the careers and work environment of engineers, transportation planners, information technology professionals, and social scientists. Guest speakers will discuss opportunities and their careers in the transportation industry. TTI participants will explore the impact of the environment, on transportation and communities. The program will operate from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, Monday-Friday.

Undergraduate Scholars Program in Interdisciplinary Perspective on the African-American Legacy. The Program will engage students in rigorous training in interdisciplinary research and the effective integration of primary historical source data into an understanding of two important African-American institutions—the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper and Morgan State University—and their parallel development over the years. The research will focus on archives, manuscript collections and other primary source repositories. The Program will attempt to develop in students a passion for scholarship and research and prepare them to be the next generation of Ph.D. holders by assisting them with the graduate school application process.

Description Program Overview The Summer Academy of Mathematics and Science (SAMS) program is a rigorous academic enrichment program designed to foster excitement, among high school students, in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Students reside for five-weeks on the campus of Morgan State University and attend mathematics, English, computer science, and professional development classes. The ultimate goal of the SAMS program is to increase the number of students from underrepresented communities who pursue math and science-related majors in college and, ultimately, math and science-related careers. SAMS students attend mathematics classes each day, Monday through Saturday, during the five-week program. English and computer science meet daily Monday through Friday. In addition to mathematics, English and computer coursework, students participate in laboratory experiments, case studies, faculty seminars, hands-on projects, professional development seminars, field trips, and other enrichment activities. These activities are designed to enhance the weekly program themes which include actuarial science, biology, chemistry, computational mathematics, engineering and physics. Eligibility SAMS accepts students who are preparing to enter the 10th, 11th, or 12th grades. High school graduates who plan to begin studies in the fall at Morgan’s School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences are also welcome to apply. Applicants are selected through a competitive application and interview process. Program Fees There is no cost to apply to SAMS. If accepted, there is a $150 enrollment fee for each participant. (Depending on funding, fees may be waived.) The enrollment fee is payable by cashier’s check or money order made out to the Morgan State University Foundation.

Age Range The program is open to rising 10th, 11th, or 12th graders. High school graduates who plan to begin studies in the fall at Morgan's School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences are also welcome to apply.

Program Name Summer Program in Research and Learning (SPIRAL)

Description The seven-week program on the campus of Morgan State will have a three- pronged approach: (1) Students will participate in research seminars in mathematics, probability and statistics in which research projects will be investigated in teams. Each team will write a final paper discussing their results and give an oral presentation. (2) There will be an intensive seven-week course - emphasizing proof, with problem workshops and daily homework- consisting of modules, that will include, Cominatorics, Modeling the Spread of Infectious and Non-Infectious Diseases (Statistics). (3) Most weeks will have a day devoted to professional development and career awareness, enhancing the students' view of the mathematical world.

Program Name Verizon Innovative Learning Program for Minority Males

Start and End Date Session 1: June 25, 2018 – July 6, 2018 (closed on July 4, 2018_ Session 2: July 9, 2018 – July 20, 2018 (Sessions are held Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00pm).

Description Morgan State University and Verizon are offering a free program to engage students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students will get hands-on experience with advanced technology, including coding, 3-D design and printing, robotics, virtual reality and more. In addition, participants will learn what it takes to build and run a business as an entrepreneur. Students will see what it’s like to be in college, and they’ll be paired with graduate and undergraduate students who will serve as year-round mentors. The program’s goal is to expose African American and Latino boys to technology and careers in technology fields they may not have been aware of.

Age Range The program is for African American and Latino boys attending Baltimore City Public Middle Schools entering grades six through eight.
