Morgan Sullivan 1996-Present

InspirationSally Mann is a very natural photographer in my eyes. She photographs things and people as they are. She doesn’t falsely beautify a person before photographing them. This photo is my favorite of hers. It’s a photo of her eldest daughter balancing on her toes. It reminds me of doing the same thing as a kid, though I was never as comfortable being as naked as she is. The photo shows how her family is, and doesn’t cover her up. It shows pride in herself and her being rather than the shame of her own body.

of combining completely different

worlds into one image. This one is my favorite in the gallery.

landscape of a city. There’s also a streak

of orangey red, making the photo

seem as though there is an added theme of

fire.

The whole theme of carnivals and amusement parks is very interesting to me. They’re fun and nostalgic. Images of them make me really excited for some reason. The added theme of abandonment makes it even more incredible. Abandoned and broken down amusement parks are so amazing to me. This image is part of a collection of photos by different photographers of the aftermath a Six Flags park that was hit by Hurricane Katrina. These images are so hauntingly beautiful to me. They are eerie and creepy but very intriguing. I really love amusement parks.

Howl’s Moving Castle is my favorite movie of all time. I know a lot of people will tease my about having such a love for a “cartoon,” but to me it is an incredible word of art. The original story was written by Diana Wynne Jones and was adapted into a movie by the popular director, Hayao Miyazaki. This animation explores the ideas of magic and alternate worlds combining with politics. The story as a whole is a romance, but not in the cheesy way. The detail in the artwork of the movie is beautiful. I could watch this movie every day and never get sick of it.

Wenqing Yan has created works that stimulate imagination and emotion of many individuals. Her concepts match her talent, and combine to create incredible pieces. One of my favorites is this recent piece, “Eye of Paradise.” The illusion of peacock feather as an eye was a symbol for the whole picture being about the “flight and freedom that birds have.” A peacock, being one of the most beautiful and colorful birds in existence, was her choice of species for the painting. She made it while being sick in bed for a week, which made her feel too trapped.

Marlene Freimanis is my favorite artist. She is incredibly talented and a positive person regardless of the pain she’s been through. She’s dealt with 7 spinal surgeries due to a botched scoliosis correction operation. The paintings to the right are just a couple of her incredible works. She works in all mediums and styles, and the detail in her art is incredible. The one on the top in one of the many paintings she worked on inspired by the pain in her spine. She worked on these while recovering from her surgeries. It represents the scarring left by her disorder and the physical and emotional pain it caused. Her back tattoo is written on the top, meaning “Emotional Wound,” the title of this painting.

Artist’s StatementI have always enjoyed photography, but as a child I thought it was simple. Around the age of 13 I started looking at different techniques and styled, but until I started it myself at 15 I didn’t understand much at all. I started with photography as a Sophomore in my High School class. I like to photography people and places. I like to mix them. I find the idea of combining a face and an area really appealing. Over time I think my photography has gotten more complicated. There are no more simple prints and most of them have texture and contrast. I attend school at School One, and have only taken one photography class. I use a 35mm Nikon 6006 camera. I don’t use many techniques while I’m shooting but I use a lot in the darkroom. I am influenced by other artists, my peers, and all the things around me: nature, culture, paintings, people, and places. Things I like and the things I don’t. Photography, to me, is another form of art and another outlet for my emotions, just like painting or drawing. Photography is telling a story and showing feelings through one picture, or many. Photography is art, and acts the same as all other works of art.

This is a photo of two girls I know, Amber and Lucy, sandwiched together. One of the negatives is moved so that half of anothernegative is coming into the photo. The other part of the print is an excerpt of the book “Anna Dressed in Blood.”

This is a portrait of my friend, Camilla. It was taken when she wasn’t looking.

This photo of Colleen was honestly taken while she was eating yogurt without a spoon, so the most challenging part was cropping the yogurt out without taking a chunk of her face from the photo. Her face was sandwiched with a negative of the collage on my bedroom wall, a constant project in my life.
