Principal's Report

Tell Them From Me student feedback survey

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 March and 13 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying @ BBPS

On Friday, each class will be participating in a range of fun and educational activities to promote a strong anti-bullying stance, as a part of the National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying. These are outlined later in the newsletter and samples of our students' work will be featured in next week's newsletter.

Last Friday, I spoke to the Stage 3 girls about cyber-bullying and the department's stance on it. With increasing access to technology and social media amongst young people it's important they understand when using social media or other digital platforms to bully, harrass or put someone down is serious behaviour and is not acceptable. Where there is a relationship betwen the two, or more, parties that is as a result of attending the same school, and the bullying is reported to the school, then this can result in formal disciplinary action, including suspension for aggressive behaviour. Cyber-bullying is a growing issue, particularly amongst adolescent girls. A strong partnership between school and home can help us combat this issue so that our students are transitioning to high school with an understanding of acceptable online behaviour. I really like the following infographic as a reminder for this.

This could be a great discussion starter for you to use at home as well to talk to your child

about how you use social media and what you do when a friend posts comments that you think cross the line. This would really reinforce what we are doing at school.

Attendance: when should I keep my child at home?

We value good attendance from our students as absentiism can negatively impact a student's learning. However, there are times when it will be in the best interest for the student and wider school community if your unwell child stays home. This is particularly true for infectious diseases such as gastroenteritis.

This week I posted to our school Facebook about Gastroenteritis and how it can be contained. The link to the factsheet is:

Gastroenteritis Factsheet

One of the recommendations is that students do not come to school for at least 24 hours after the last bout of vomitting or diarrhoea. Several students who've presented at sickbay recently have made comments such as, "I felt sick this morning but mum/dad said I had to go to school". Please consider this before you send a nauseous child to school as this is increasing the spread of the virus.

The following website from the Department of Health details infectious diseases and describes the period for when students are contagious and should be kept at home.

Infectious Diseases

The best way to reduce the spread of gastroenteritis and other bugs is through thorough handwashing. This should be done using soap and water for 10 - 15 seconds and hands need to be dried afterwards. Many of our students don't automatically wash their hands after going to the toilet. For this reason, teachers are ensuring that all students wash their hands when they return to class. Please reinforce this simple hygiene task at home so that it becomes an automatic response for each and every student.

If you are able to donate some handwash or handtowel to your child's class to support these hygiene practices then that would be greatly appreciated.

Leave

A reminder that I am on leave as of tomorrow and will be returning on Tuesday, 3 April. Sarah Young will be relieving in my absence and Pip Lewis will be the relieving Assistant Principal for Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten).

Library News Week 7

The term is disapearing very quickly! It has been a productive term in the library and the students have enjoyed making discoveries about digital technologies.

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) has begun. Students login to their reading record online via the PRC website https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html They need to use their school usernames and passwords. All PRC books that go home have the ID number on the front cover in the top left hand corner. Any problems please contact me.

I am concerned about the lack of children borrowing each week. Please help your children by reminding them of their library day, packing their library bag and returning books every week. Reading is a life long learner skill and it is important we encourage our children to read for pleasure and to gain knowledge.

Happy Reading

Mrs Wood

PBL Respectful

This week students have been learning how to be respectful in a range of areas including classrooms, the playground, canteen, front office and library.

Students have been enjoying collecting their Leaps and Bounds tokens to trade for a reward such as mufti, be the teacher for 10 minutes, help in another classroom, wear slippers in the classroom or ipad time. Well done to all the students who have already received their rewards.

Everyone, Everywhere, Every time!

Star Struck 2018

Congratulations to both our dance ensemble and choir for being accepted into Star Struck 2018!

A teachers' meeting will be held this Thursday 15th March where we will find out more about the show this year. Once we know what each group will be performing in we will be able to give further information about the costume fees.

Both the choir and dance ensemble have received notes about a participation fee today. The Star Struck participation Fee of $25 is now due. This fee can be paid at the school office or online through the school website. This fee will then be transferred by the school directly to Star Struck.

National Day Of Action Against Violence And Bullying

This Friday 16th March 2018 students across the school will be participating in a variety of activities as part of National Day of Action against Violence and Bullying Kinder Kindness

This Friday is National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying. Kindergarten teachers have designed a fun and educational day to teach students to speak and act with kindness. Students will listen to story titled ‘Have you Filled a Bucket Today?’. The book is heart -warming story encouraging positive behaviour by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love by filling buckets.

They will learn to think before they speak as it is hard to fix a heart once it has been hurt.

Students will pledge to be a good friend after participating in dinosaur themed activities and learning to be a friendly-saurus not a bully rex.

Be sure to ask your children about these amazing activities they participated in on Friday.

Stage 1 will be participating in a unit of work about caring for each other and identifying bullying behaviours. In classes, we will work through;

- What are caring behaviours?

- How can I care for other students in my class and at my school?

- Recognising bullying behaviours

- Protecting ourselves and others from bullying

Students will also have access to an App called "Allen" that was created for the campaign to support the learning of all students.

The National Day is a positive day of action, bringing school communities together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence.

I encourage all parents and caregivers to have a look at the website and discuss with your family.

Stages 2 and 3 will be undertaking a range of activities to support the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. This day will supplement the programs we currently have running during PDHPE time.

We will discuss:

What is bullying?

Where does it happen?

Why does it occur?

Support people that we can seek help from

We will examine:

The role and actions of a bystander including watching short videos and discussion possible actions one should take. (https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/resources/videos/pages/videoplayer.aspx?VideoID=183)

The impact of online bullying

The ‘Stand Together’ app.

We will strengthen our skills to take action by:

Working in small groups to identify and resolve bullying situations.

Create anti-bullying posters.

You can support these programs at home by visiting the Bullying No Way website on https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/

Imagine A World Free From Bullying..

In preparation for the National Day of Action against Violence and Bullying Mrs Marchant questioned a selection of students about imagining a world free of bullying. This display can be viewed in the front office.

Stage 1 Creative Arts Day

Last Friday Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) held an Art day to experience different ways to make art. We rotated through a variety activities and learnt about colour mixing, patterns, shape and tone.

We enjoyed making bubble paintings, pineapples, sunsets, masks and lion heads. We used a variety of different materials to do each art activity.

All students were safe, respectful and engaged learners during the day!

Student feedback was positive and everyone enjoyed the experience. Thank you to all of the parents who were able to help on the day.
