Morley Memorial Primary School ‘Making Learning Irresistible’ Summer 2017 Newsletter 32 The events which took place in Manchester on Monday raise questions to which there is no easy answer and yet for those children who are aware of what happened there is a need for both reassurance and explanation, particularly as the attack involved children. In situations such as this we try to respond to the demands of our children - whilst a few children have talked about it with friends or their teacher, feedback from staff is that the majority have not chosen to. For this reason we have chosen not to raise this as a whole school topic or have a formal discussion but rather respond to the questions from individual children as they come to us. For parents wanting guidance on how to talk about such high-profile violent events Winston’s Wish has some helpful advice. As terrible as such events are, they are extremely rare and as the events in our newsletter this week show our children have had some amazing, positive experiences in school this week. Nikki Brown Yr5 Quiz victory On Tuesday, Coleridge Community College hosted its first ever Yr5 Quiz and Morley entered a team from Indigo and Amethyst. Four other teams from two other primaries also took part. The quiz included rounds on geography, history, maths and spelling, the variety of rounds giving all four members of each team chance to contribute. The competition was close but after a tense three question tie breaker the Amethyst team, ‘The Sparking Marshmallows’ emerged victorious with the Indigo team, ‘The Super Sparks’ coming a close third. Yr5 Quiz victory

(Off the) Street Party

The Friends of Morley would like to thank all of you who helped make Morley’s very first (Off the) Street Party such a success. We are proud to report that we raised a

total of £1,727. Most important, however, was the community spirit, and so we would like to thank you again for all the delicious food so many of you brought

along, the help from the many volunteers, and for simply choosing to come and enjoy the beautiful weather with school friends and family.

Year 5 spent a wonderful sunny Wednesday at Burwell Museum and Windmill this week. We put ourselves in the boots of Fenland Victorians and helped Mr and Mrs Mason with an important decision. They couldn't make up their mind whether to give in to industrialisation and use steam instead of wind to power for their mill. We especially impressed the staff at the museum with the depth of our thinking as a Victorian. Well done Year 5!

We have been very lucky in Year 5 this week to have had 2 visitors to inspire us. Hilary and Anita, both of which work at the Centre for the Developing Brain, came in on Tuesday to immerse us in the bemusing world of neuroscience in a way that was incredibly exciting and engaging! We would all like to say a BIG thank you, we all very much enjoyed the jelly brain and the sight of William with his head decorations!

It's never too late to celebrate! On 15th May the year 5 boys went to their Champions League Night at Coleridge where they were to face Abbey Meadows in the semi-finals. The game went to penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw where, after plenty of nerves, we scored all our penalties and won 5-4 to get to the final, where they would come up against St Matthew's. Unfortunately, they were incredibly unlucky to lose 3-0 in the final where they managed to match them for the majority of the game! But to be crowned the second best school team in Cambridge is something that each of them can be proud of! Well done to Thomas, Ben, Fin, Zeph, Romeo, Max, Will, Noah, Sam and Taylor for showing such a fantastic attitude throughout the tournament and for being so supportive of one another both in training and in games!

Class of the week - Amethyst Class This class have been taught by more than a couple of different teachers this week and have adapted well. They have especially broadened their horizons in English, where they have managed to create a really effective language magpie-ing culture to make their poetry especially wonderful. When they performed their poetry one by one, it conjured up really vivid images in their teacher's mind. If you need any proof that this class is full of very conscientious writers, you would need to look no further than a display very nearby. And finally, on a very hot Wednesday, they managed to impress the staff at Burwell Museum very much with their in-depth thinking in the shoes of a Victorian. Class of the week this week is.... Amethyst!

On the celebration tree this week… Scarlet: Eva, Thomas Crimson: Luka, Kitty Ruby: Naomi Burgundy: Alex, Theo Topaz: Larissa, Ben, Barney Jade: Elliot, Mimi Sapphire: Jennie Indigo: Ben Amethyst: Finn Violet: Emily, Emma Bull, Flora, Keanen, Emma Badcock, Peter

Magnificent Microscopes! As part of their work on arthropods, Year 2 were lucky enough to have the opportunity to look very closely at some fruit flies this week when visitors from the Gurdon Institute brought in some microscopes and samples for the children to explore. There was a buzz of excitement in the room as children got to grips with focussing the microscopes in order to match, sketch and observe. There were lots of cries of “Look at this! It’s amazing!” A huge thank you to Phil Zeggerman and the team from the Gurdon Institute who made this exciting experience possible.

Year 3 needs your help! We are on the hunt for large sheets of cardboard or large cardboard boxes that we can turn into Roman shields. If you have either of the above that you do not need please send them to either Year 3 classrooms. Thanks in advance.
