The spelling beemay be conducted orally orin writing or in a manner that
is a combination of the two;however, if the spelling beeofficials specify an oral for-mat, the speller may notdemand a written formatexcept under the conditionsof Rule 4.
3. Word list: Localspelling bee officials areresponsible for selecting theword lists for use at eachlocal spelling bee. Manylocal spelling bee officialsuse word lists generated bythe Scripps National SpellingBee. These lists includemany words that appear inthe current edition of Spell It!as well as some “end-of-bee”words. All words on ScrippsNational Spelling Bee word
lists are entries in Webster’sThird New International Dic-tionary and its addenda sec-tion, copyright 2002, Merri-am-Webster, the official dic-tionary of the ScrippsNational Spelling Bee.
4. Special needs: Spellingbee officials will strive toprovide accommodation forspellers who have physicalchallenges. All requests forspelling bee officials toaccommodate special needsinvolving sight, hearing, speech, or movement shouldbe directed to spelling beeofficials well in advance ofthe spelling bee date. ly slower pronunciation.Pronouncer’s sense of
helpfulness: The pronouncermay offer word informa-tion—without the spellerhaving requested the informa-tion—if the pronouncer sens-es that the information ishelpful and the information ispresented in the entry for theword in a 2015 ScrippsNational Spelling Bee wordlist.
In Oral VocabularyRoundsProcedure: The pronounc-
er reads aloud the vocabularyquestion and both options (A)and (B), but does not indicatewhich is correct.Homonyms: If a word has
one or more homonyms, thepronouncer indicates whichword is in question byspelling the word aloud.Speller’s requests: The
pronouncer responds to thespeller’s requests for thequestion and/or answeroptions to be repeated. Thepronouncer may also providethe spelling of the word inquestion.
6. Judges’ role: Thejudges uphold the rules anddetermine whether or not
words are spelled correctly orvocabulary items areanswered correctly. They alsorender final decisions onappeals in accordance withRule 11. They are in com-plete control of the competi-tion and their decision is finalon all questions.Interaction with the
speller: Because seeing thespeller’s lip movements maybe critical in detecting misun-derstandings or misspellings, the judges encourage spellersto face them when pronounc-ing and spelling the word.Notice of rules: The
judges ensure that all spellersand audience members aregiven an opportunity toreceive a complete copy of
the rules prior to the start ofthe spelling bee.Misunderstandings: The
judges participate in theexchange of informationbetween the speller and pro-nouncer if they feel that clari-fication is needed. Also, thejudges listen carefully to thespeller’s pronunciation of theword; and, if they sense thatthe speller has misunderstoodthe word, the judges workwith the speller and pro-nouncer until they are satis-fied that reasonable attemptshave been made to assist thespeller in understanding theword. While the judges areresponsible for attempting todetect a speller’s misunder-standing, it is sometimes
impossible to detect a misun-derstanding until an error hasbeen made. The judges arenot responsible for thespeller’s misunderstanding.Pronouncer errors: The
judges compare the pro-nouncer’s pronunciation withthe diacritical markings in theword list. If the judges feelthat the pronouncer’s pronun-ciation does not match thepronunciation specified in thediacritical markings, thejudges direct the pronouncerto correct the error as soon asit is detected.Disqualifications for rea-
sons other than error: Thejudges will disqualify aspeller (1) who refuses arequest to start spelling or to
provide an answer to a vocab-ulary question; (2) who doesnot approach the microphonewhen it is time to receive theword or question; (3) whodoes not comply with the eli-gibility requirements; (4) whoengages in unsportsmanlikeconduct; (5) who, in theprocess of retracing aspelling, alters the letters orsequence of letters from thosefirst uttered; (6) who, in theprocess of spelling, uttersunintelligible or nonsensesounds; or (7) who, in theprocess of providing ananswer in an oral vocabularyround, provides a blend ofcorrect and incorrect informa-tion (For example: If inanswering the question,
“What is porridge madefrom? A. fur, or B. grain,” thespeller provides as an answereither “A. grain” or “B. fur.”).Speller activities that do
not merit disqualification:The judges may not disquali-fy a speller (1) for failing topronounce the word eitherbefore or after spelling it, (2)for asking a question, or (3)for noting or failing to notethe capitalization of a word, the presence of a diacriticalmark, the presence of ahyphen or other form ofpunctuation, or spacingbetween words in an opencompound.

7. Speller’s role: In a spelling round, thespeller makes an effort to face the judges andpronounce the word for the judges beforespelling it and after spelling it. The spellerwhile facing the judges makes an effort toutter each letter distinctly and with sufficientvolume to be understood by the judges. Thespeller may ask the pronouncer to say theword again, define it, use it in a sentence, provide the part of speech, provide the lan-guage(s) of origin, and/or provide an alternatepronunciation or pronunciations.
Misunderstandings: The speller is respon-sible for any misunderstanding of the wordunless (1) the pronouncer never provided acorrect pronunciation; (2) the pronouncerprovided incorrect information regarding thedefinition, part of speech, or language of ori-gin; or (3) the speller correctly spelled a hom-onym of the word and the pronouncer failedto either offer a definition or distinguish thehomonyms.
In an oral vocabulary round, a speller mayanswer the question by providing (1) the let-ter associated with the chosen answer, (2) thechosen answer or (3) both. If the correctanswer is identified by (1) associated letteralone or (2) by answer alone or (3) by bothcorrect letter and correct answer, the speller iscorrect.

9. Errors: Upon providing an incor-rect spelling of a word or an incorrectanswer to a vocabulary question, thespeller immediately drops out of thecompetition, except as provided in Rule10.
10. End-of-bee procedure: If allspellers in a round misspell or answervocabulary questions incorrectly: Ifnone of the spellers remaining in thespelling bee at the start of a round spellsa word correctly or answers a vocabu-lary question correctly during that
round, all remain in the competition anda new spelling round begins.
Ties: All spellers eliminated in thesame round are tied for the same place. After the champion has been deter-mined, spelling bee officials may opt toconduct tiebreakers (of their owndesign) if tiebreakers are necessary forthe awarding of prizes or the determina-tion of qualifying spellers for the nextlevel of competition.
If only one speller in a round spellscorrectly or answers a vocabulary ques-tion correctly: If only one speller spellscorrectly in a round, a new one-wordspelling round begins and the speller isgiven an opportunity to spell a word onthe list (anticipated championshipword). VERY IMPORTANT: Ifa speller misspells the antici-pated championship word ina one-word round: A newspelling round begins withALL the spellers who partici-pated in the previous round. These spellers spell in theiroriginal order.
Example: In Round 8there are three spellers.Speller 12 spells correctlyand Spellers 23 and 37 mis-spell. Round 9—a one-wordround—begins, and Speller12 is offered the anticipatedchampionship word. Crestview spelling bee competitors receive last minute instructions on the procedures of the spelling bee.
Incorrect or unsolicitedinformation: An appeal claim-ing that the speller’s elimina-tion was unfair because thepronouncer offered incorrector unsolicited informationabout the word should bedenied unless it is determinedthat the pronouncer indeedgave factually incorrect infor-mation and it appears that thespeller’s spelling would havebeen correct if not for theincorrect or unsolicited infor-mation provided by the pro-nouncer.
Bee officials failed to cor-rect a misunderstanding: Anappeal claiming that thespeller misspelled or incor-rectly answered because thejudges and/or pronouncerfailed to correct the speller’smispronunciation of the wordshould be denied. It is some-times impossible to detect aspeller’s mispronunciation ormisunderstanding, and ulti-mately it is the responsibilityof the speller to understandand correctly pronounce theword.
Disqualification request:An appeal seeking to dislodgeanother speller from thespelling bee should be denied.———Information by ScrippsNational Spelling Bee
