HOME LEARNING Reception 28/04/20 Morning Message Good morning, We hope you are enjoying the new tasks that were set yesterday. Have you tried Purple Mash yet? It is lots of fun so give it a go if you can. Did you like the butterfly video? We thought it was amazing and wondered how a butterfly fits in that tiny little chrysalis! Today we will continue to learn about patterns. There are so many patterns in the world around us – how many can you spot in the room you’re in now? We hope that you will also try one of the creative tasks today. We really enjoyed making the symmetrical butterfly. It was fun to see the second wing appear as if by magic! We hope you have a lovely Tuesday. Keep up all the great work and remember to have fun! Don’t forget to try the School Jam and upload a picture or video to your 2Simple profile if you haven’t done so already. Ms Mulry and Ms O’Sullivan Today’s Picture

Morning Message Good morning, We hope you are enjoying the new tasks that were set yesterday. Ms Mulry and Ms O’Sullivan

Writing As she looks down the never ending tunnel, the tracks go as far as her eyes can see - but where does the path lead? Task: Does the tunnel ever end? Draw and write about what lies at the end of the tunnel. Maybe there is a hidden world for her to explore or a secret door that leads to a secret place. What do you think? Talk about the picture and your ideas with your parents or siblings before completing the task in your red book.

Reading and Phonics Reading: Picture and reading task

Jack and Kim are having their breakfast at the table.

They eat pop crisps and milk. Mum is looking at the news.

The reporter says it will be a hot day. Can you remember what you read? Parents and carers, please ask your child the following questions: Where are Jack and Kim? What are they doing? What is mum doing? What kind of day will it be? How do you know? What do you think a reporter does? What else is happening in the picture?

Phonics Today we would like you to focus on the ‘or’ sound. Watch this video and try to join in with Geraldine the giraffe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm9PRHDJlv4. Can you look around your home for things that might include the ‘or’ sound? Now watch this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LILeh-ok7rs. Can you blend the sounds together to read the words? Parents and carers, mute or pause the video so your child can try to read the words independently, then together with Mr T. Encourage your child to read the sentence at the end of the video. You may need to pause it to give your child time to decode/read the sentence. Continue to practise your Set 1 and 2 tricky words (I, no, go, to, the, into, he, she, me, we, be, was, are, my). Can you practise the new tricky word ‘they’? Look, say, cover and write. Task: Write a word to match the picture (fork, corn, fort)

Maths We will continue to look at patterns today. Below, Matilda has made some sand castles. Parents and carers, this is an opportunity for children to identify patterns in a variety of contexts. The main image is of Matilda building sandcastles with an ABB pattern using two shapes. There are several ABB patterns embedded in the scene for children to spot. Look at the picture below and answer the questions that follow.

What do you notice about the order of the sandcastle shapes? What is the pattern? Can you describe the pattern? What shape sandcastle will Matilda make next? Where does the pattern begin? Where does the pattern end? Can you see any other patterns in the picture? Does every pattern have a core that repeats? Encourage your child to use the vocabulary ‘repeats’ and ‘pattern’ when describing what they see. Encourage your child to look at the sandcastle and say cone, castle, castle, over and over - this will help them to make the pattern clear. Encourage your child to find other examples of patterns in the picture and prompt them to describe the similarities and differences between the patterns. Ask: Can you make a word pattern to describe what you see in the picture? e.g. Large cloud, small cloud, small cloud, White stripe, blue stripe, blue stripe Striped bunting, red bunting, red bunting Small wave, small wave, tall wave

In the image below, encourage your child to describe the pattern by naming each item out loud and think about which direction the pattern should continue in. Draw your child’s attention to what Dexter is saying and encourage them to identify the repeats and verbalise what the core is. Ask the following questions: Where will the next sandcastle go? Can you describe what you see? Say the pattern out loud. Can you point to the unit that repeats? How could you show the pattern?

Task: Use a variety of different sized and coloured objects to make an ABB pattern. Can you verbally describe your pattern? What are the repeats? Can you make a pattern of more than three repeats? Can your sibling or parent continue your pattern when you are finished?

Topic Work ( for the week) Creative Task 1 Purple Mash: Paint a picture. Follow this link https://www.purplemash.com/sch/princessfrederica and use your personal login (which has been emailed to you). When you log in, the alert bell will have a red dot on it. Click on this and you will see the task set. Then click the green button and off you go. Remember to save your artwork so your teacher can see it. Task 2

Task 3

Task 4

Make a symmetrical butterfly with paints

Fold an A4 piece of paper or card in half. Paint one side of

the butterfly and then fold the page to see the paint

transfer to the other side. You now have a symmetrical

butterfly (that means that both his wings are the same or

identical). What other pictures could you make using this

method?

Art with nature

Go into your garden and collect some

natural objects (flowers, leaves, twigs,

branches). What kind of picture can you

create? Maybe you could make some

nature people like the ones in these

examples.

Climbing rainbow experiment

Fold a paper towel in half and colour one end

with lots of different coloured markers (like in

the picture). Let the paper towel dry fully.

When dry, place it in a glass of water (only use

a small amount of water so just the bottom of

the paper towel touches it). You might need to

tape the top of the paper towel to something

like the window so it stands upright. Then

watch as the rainbow climbs the paper towel.

Task 5 Let’s do some role play! Who could you be? Do you have any fancy dress clothes to help you become a character? Maybe you could be a superhero - what will your powers be? Or perhaps you would like to play in your pretend kitchen - what will you cook? Will you have a restaurant? Maybe you could make a menu.

Understanding the World Last week we learned about the life cycle of a chick. This week we are going to be looking at the life cycle of a butterfly. Who loves butterflies? We do - we love how they flutter and fly. They are quite amazing! Let’s find out all about butterflies! Task 1 Look at the images below explaining the life cycle of a butterfly and discuss with your parents or siblings:

Can you remember each stage? What happens first? Then what happens? Can you remember what a chrysalis is? What do you think happens when the butterfly comes out of its chrysalis? Do you think the cycle stops or starts again?

Task 2 Watch this video of a real butterfly life cycle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvmQiWpgX5c

What was your favourite part of the video? Can you tell your family something amazing that you learned about how caterpillars transform into butterflies?

Task 3 Do you have The Very Hungry Caterpillar book at home? If you do, read it with an adult, or if not you can listen to it being read here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY . Do you think caterpillars really like to eat all those things? Can you find out what butterflies like to eat? Use books or the internet to help you. Task 4 Go on a butterfly hunt in your garden or on your daily walk. Can you see any butterflies? What colours are their wings? Are they all the same or are some different? If you don’t see any butterflies in your garden, maybe you could ask a parent to show you some photos of different types of butterflies. Task 5 Use this link to help you identify common UK butterflies (identification and facts): https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/07/butterfly-identification/ Make a collage in your red book about all the butterflies you have found and what they like to eat.
