Did you know?
Did you know that sour candies erode toothenamel and speed up decay?
It’s True! Sour candies contain citric acidwhich erodes tooth enamel much faster thanany other food. Most sour candies are moreacidic than vinegar, and are in contact withteeth for prolonged periods as the candy iseaten. Rinsing after sour candy helps.

BANDON — Back in 1900 what became known as Audubon magazine suggested a new yule-tide recreation: Who could count the most birds in their native habitat. This winter, an estimated 60,000 people in the United States, Canada and elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere will take part in the 120th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Within count circles registered in advance with the National Audubon Society, teams of birders will take to the field for fun, for tradition and for science.
Today CBC results, stretching back to the count’s inception, have been computerized, and this massive database can be analyzed to track shifts in distribution, seasonal irruptions of nomadic birds, and large scale population changes. When combined with breeding bird surveys, the effort provides an early warning system when a bird species begins to decline.
The Coquille Valley Christmas Bird Count is the local contributor to the Audubon Society’s annual exercise. The Coquille Valley count circle stretches from Bandon on the coast all the way east to Coquille and Norway bottoms and from Whiskey Run Beach on the north to Dew Valley Road on the
south. Cape Arago Audubon president Harv Schubothe leads the local count.
On Saturday, Jan. 4, birders from Bandon to Coquille will try to match the circle’s 159 different bird species seen in 1995, which remains the third highest count in state history. This year’s count will be the 23rd count in the Coquille Valley. Last year, 42 observers in the field and 12 participants moni-toring their bird feeders and yards counted 36,534 birds, identifying 150 different species. For the sec-ond year in a row, this was the highest species count for all circles in Oregon.
Those interested in joining a count team on Jan. 4 can e-mail [email protected] or call 541-297-2342. The count teams can anticipate being out in the field from dawn to dusk.
For those who would like to help but are unable to devote the entire day or are unable to get out in the field, there are opportunities to count birds in their yards or neighborhoods or at their feeders on count day at their leisure. Feeder counters are espe-cially short in number. Those interested in helping in this way can again contact the above number or email.
Coquille Valley Bird Count set for Jan. 4

BANDON -- Unity of Bandon will be celebrat-ing the arrival of the New Year with a White Stone Service set to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5. This service is based on the ancient practice of prisoners being given a white stone when they were released from captivity.
Participants will be given the opportunity to write "a letter to God" focusing on their intentions and dreams for the coming year. This letter will be held in prayer at Unity of Bandon over the next 12
months and then returned to the participant next December. The white stone is significant in Scripture in that a person who has overcome or conquered something is given a white stone on which to mark the new beginning. This is a very positive and mean-ingful way to begin the New Year with a fresh start and all are welcome to attend.
Unity of Bandon Church is located 1 mile south of 11th Street on Highway 101. More informa-tion may be obtained by calling 541-347-4696.

will go to charity. The kids 1-mile run is free, while the fees for

BANDON — A new exhibition of photographs exploring Bandon during the Eisenhower Era, 1955–1961, is now on display at the Bandon Professional Center through Nov. 25, 2020.
The exhibition features over 40 historic photo-graphs sourced from the Bandon Western World newspaper film negatives. Many of these images are being publicly shown for the first time.
The photographs depict scenes of everyday Bandon life but reflect broad themes of the United States of the 1950s. There was postwar prosperity, a blossoming material culture and local economic struggles. New thinking challenged traditions of art, design, music and dance. Women contributed in the workforce amidst evolving perceptions of domestic
values. The Cold War loomed and schools imple-mented more rigorous instruction in science and technology. But throughout we see the generous and resilient nature of Bandon citizens, celebrating and enjoying life, giving charitably, and engaging in civic improvement.
This exhibition is possible thanks to the board, staff, and volunteers of the Bandon Historical Society, with special thanks to Mary Schamehorn and the Bandon Western World newspaper.
The Bandon Professional Center is located at 1010 First Street SE in Bandon. The exhibition is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

COOS BAY — With 2019 at an end, the envi-ronmental nonprofit SOLVE reported that they con-nected nearly 32,000 volunteers to over 1,160 envi-ronmental projects in a year-end update for their 50th year of operation.
In the course of these projects, SOLVE reported volunteers collected 282,012 pounds of litter and marine debris, recycled 169,386 cigarettes, and cleared over 21 acres of invasive species.
"The informal SOLVE motto is just to 'get things done,'" said Kris Carico, SOLVE CEO. "We are a small but mighty team, always thinking of the most efficient route to have the biggest impact to improve Oregon's environment."
Many Oregonians know SOLVE from their coast-wide beach cleanups and SOLVE IT Earth Day
events. However, SOLVE supports volunteers throughout the year and promotes volunteer opportu-nities every weekend on their website.
SOLVE was founded by Governor Tom McCall in 1969 and is Oregon's go-to environmental non-profit. SOLVE focuses on marine debris prevention, litter cleanup, removal of invasive species, and plant-ing native trees. They engage hundreds of thousands of volunteers to collect litter and remove invasive plants every year. Since their start 50 years ago, it's estimated they have cleared over a million pounds of litter and cleared hundreds of acres of coast land.
