COOS COUNTY - Coos County 2019-2020 property tax statements were mailed Oct. 15. Property owners, who have not received their bill by the first week of November should contact the tax office.

To avoid any late charges, pay-ment must be received or post-marked by Nov. 15.

Due to an error, Bandon resi-dents should wait to pay their 2019-20 taxes until they receive a cor-rected statement. According to Mayor Mary Schamehorn, a city staff member incorrectly certified the bonds, resulting in slightly high-er tax bills on the City of Bandon bond portion of the statement.

The county will be reissuing corrected statements, but it may not happen until sometime after Nov. 1, but still in time for people to receive the 2 percent discount for paying by Nov. 15.

"I know that a number of people probably paid their taxes the day they received their statement, and I am not sure whether a refund will be

issued or a credit given on next year's taxes," Schamehorn said. "But as soon as we receive the informa-tion from the county, we will let people know."

Coos County will process 2019-2020 property tax payments through its bank’s payment center in Portland. This will speed up the delivery of tax dollars to the cities, schools, ports, hospitals and other districts in the county.

Payments may be made by mail or in person at the Coos County Tax Office, 250 North Baxter St., Coquille. Credit card payments are accepted in the office or online. Tax office hours are 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-5 p.m.

Contact information: Website: http://www.co.coos.or.us/. For tax payment information, email [email protected] or call 541-396-7725. For property value infor-mation, email [email protected] or call 541-396-7900. For appeal of property value Information, email [email protected] or call 541-396-7600.

BANDON - Library lover and local artist Lois Olds has donated one of her original oil paintings, which will be raffled off at the Dec. 7 Holiday Book Sale at the Bandon Public Library, 1204 11th St. SW. The painting is currently on display at Bandon Library. Raffle tickets, $1 each or six for $5, are available at the library's checkout counter.

Olds' work has been on display at local galleries and other venues, and is privately collected. She recently was awarded her own show at the Art by the Sea Gallery. This will take place in January 2020.

Olds paints largely from photo-graphs. Over the years, she has also

taught oil painting classes in many parts of the country and in varied settings, including schools, galleries and stores. Her classes are primarily landscape and seascape painting. She has owned an art supply store in Mendocino County, Calif.

Olds has been a lifelong advo-cate for the many benefits of cre-ative expression and has seen many lives transformed through the pro-cess of self-discovery. She says that works of art outlive the artist.

Be sure to visit the library to view her painting. Buying raffle tickets gives an opportunity to own a beautiful, original piece of art and support the library.

BANDON — The Bandon-By-The-Sea Rotary club will celebrate its 25th annual Wine & Cheese Extravaganza from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Bandon Community Center, 1200 11th St. SW.

Savory tastes of domestic and imported cheeses will be paired with regional and imported wines. Scrumptious hors d'oeuvres and dessert bites will be provided by Coastal Mist.

One of this year’s featured cheeses is Face Rock Creamery’s award-winning Peppercorn Harvest Clothbound Cheddar. The cheese won first place in the 36th Annual National Cheese Society Awards. Cooper Ridge Vineyards will be one of the featured wineries.

The fundraiser features an enjoyable evening at one of Bandon's most anticipated events. A limited

number of tickets will be sold so everyone attending will have a seat at a table.

The Rotary event will also feature a no-host bar provided by Edgewaters, silent and live auction items donated by local merchants and individuals and a wine grab raffle. BANDON - "Why DIY? - American Self-Sufficiency" is the topic of friendly discussion at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Bandon Public Library, 1204 11th St. SW. Everyone is welcome.

Are people as self-sufficient as we can be? As they should be? What are the pleasures and pitfalls of "doing it yourself"? This conversation with Jennifer Burns Bright investigates why people strive to be mak-ers and doers in a world that provides more conve-niences than ever before.

How might the “new industrial revolution” of tin-kerers and crafters affect American schools and work-places? How do maker spaces or skills courses foster

greater engagement and involvement? What could be left behind when self-sufficiency in a community is increased?

All DIY interests are welcome: The audience can focus on foraging, permaculture, prepping, woodwork-ing, or other DIY experiences. Through shared stories, attendees will seek to understand more deeply this aspect of American life.

The Conversation Project of Oregon Humanities facilitates group conversation around multiple subjects throughout Oregon. This event is sponsored by the Bandon Library. Join this conversation and let the library know future subjects that may be of interest.

BANDON — "Life in Pieces," a one-man live show, will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW in Bandon.

This inspirational performance of delicate grace, starring John Halbert Gilpatrick, consists of opera and mime in partnership using the voice and body as art.

Gilpatrick's universal storytelling is lyrical and visceral. He has combined the two with a few care-fully selected spoken words in between. The Mime is the visceral human who expresses experience in movement. The Opera is the sound that evokes the highest octaves of resonant communication within all people.

The performance culminates in a lifetime of searching for peace, grace and forgiveness. It encour-ages the audience to reach for inspiration, to do better

than they were given."Too many of us are isolated and alone,"

Gilpatrick said. "The simple message is that wher-ever you come from, you can love and be loved. This story is dedicated to the young who need gentle guid-ance and the old who can give better than they got."

A Gilpatrick’s appreciation for mime began in 1988 when he learned his skills from two of Marcel Marceau’s protégés, Todd Farley and Russ Fish. He went on study opera under Dan Hendricks of San Diego, Calif. He has performed on TV and in theater and taught these skills to his own students over the years.

Tickets cost $18 for adults and $12 for students and are available at Bandon Mercantile, 541-347-4341 or Bandon Ace Hardware, 541-347-2506 or online at www.lifeinpiecesbandon.eventbrite.com.

BANDON — A small shoebox full of school supplies, toys, necessity items and notes of encour-agement can have a big impact on a child. Operation Christmas Child is a worldwide children's project of Samaritan's Purse that uses simple gift-filled shoe-boxes to let hurting children know they are not for-gotten.

In 2014, Operation Christmas Child reached a major milestone — delivering shoeboxes to more than 150 million children since the project began in 1993. Millions of hurting children who are victims of poverty, disease, natural disaster, war, terrorism, per-secution and famine receive Operation Christmas

Child shoebox gifts. For some of these boys and girls, it is the first gift they have ever received.

Through the power of a simple gift and the mes-sage of hope, these children learn that God loves them. Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts will be hand-delivered to children in more than 150 coun-tries on six continents. Boxes from this area will probably go to the Philippines.

Shoe Boxes are available from Sally McSherry at 541-347-9130 until Nov. 10. Boxes can also be purchased for $1 at the Dollar Tree and then picked up and turned in at the Bandon Western World news-paper office, 1185 Baltimore Ave. SE until that date.
