    OPENING SENTENCE (BCP p. 75)

    The Officiant says

Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah 60:3

    All stand

    Officiant Lord, open our lips.

People And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

    Officiant and People

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is

now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

    VENITE

Come, let us sing to the Lord; *

let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *

and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, *

and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *

and the heights of the hills are his also.

  • 4

The sea is his, for he made it, *

and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *

and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

    For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *

Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

    READING: Deuteronomy 18:15-20

    The people sit.

A Reading from the book of Deuteronomy.

15The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own

people; you shall heed such a prophet. 16This is what you requested of the LORD your

God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: "If I hear the voice of the LORD

my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die." 17Then the LORD replied

to me: "They are right in what they have said. 18I will raise up for them a prophet like you

from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall

speak to them everything that I command. 19Anyone who does not heed the words that the

prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. 20But any prophet who

speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I

have not commanded the prophet to speak — that prophet shall die."

Reader The Word of the Lord.

    People Thanks be to God.

    GOSPEL: Mark 1:21-28

    The people sit.

    A Reading from Mark.

21They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and

taught. 22They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority,

and not as the scribes. 23Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean

spirit, 24and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you

come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 25But Jesus rebuked him,

saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" 26And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and

crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27They were all amazed, and they kept on

asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching — with authority! He commands even

the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 28At once his fame began to spread throughout

    the surrounding region of Galilee.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

    People Thanks be to God.

    Silence may follow.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED (BCP p. 96)

Officiant and People together, all standing.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

    creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

    He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

    He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

    He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

ANTHEM O For a Closer Walk with God C. V. Stanford

    O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heav'nly frame;

a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb!

    Return, O holy Dove, return! Sweet messenger of rest;

I hate the sins that made thee mourn and drove them from my breast.

    So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame;

So purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb.

THE GENERAL THANSGIVING (BCP p. 836) Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side. We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone. Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

    A Prayer for Discernment

Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with

us as we consider the renewal and mission of our congregation. Teach us in all things to

seek first your honor and glory. Guide us by your Holy Spirit to perceive what is right,

and grant us both the courage to pursue it, and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus

    Christ our Lord. Amen.
