MARKET COMMENTARY

The Stocks drifted lower in volatile trade after the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy committee raised repo rate by 25 basis points. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 84.96 points or 0.23% to settle at 37,521.62. The Nifty 50 index fell 10.30 points or 0.09% to settle at 11,346.20.

Trading was volatile. The market opened higher and hit fresh intraday high in early trade. Selling emerged at higher levels, which dragged the market lower in mid-morning trade. Indices sharply recovered in early afternoon trade. Indices hit fresh intraday low in late trade after selling resumed in afternoon trade.

Broader market bucked negative market trend. Among secondary barometers, the BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.19%. The BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.26%. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was positive. On BSE, 1401 shares rose and 1295 shares fell. A total of 144 shares were unchanged.

Tech Lifts U.S. Stocks, Treasuries

Fall Before Fed: Markets Wrap: -

U.S. stocks rose for a second day, with

Apple Inc.’s results fueling a rebound in

technology shares that offset an

escalation in trade rhetoric. The yield on

10-year Treasuries rose past 3 percent

for the first time since June ahead of the

Federal Reserve’s latest rate decision.

Forex - Dollar Edges Up Ahead of

Fed, Aussie Hit by Trade Concerns: -

The U.S. dollar edged up against a

currency basket on Wednesday ahead of

the conclusion of the Federal Reserve’s

latest policy meeting later in the day,

while the risk sensitive Australian dollar

was pressured lower by renewed trade

concerns.

Gold Falls Ahead of Fed Meeting: -

Gold prices were down on Wednesday as

traders wait for a policy decision from

the Federal Reserve. Higher rates are a

negative for gold as the precious metal,

which does not pay interest, struggles to

compete with yield-bearing assets when

rates rise. The precious metal was also

held down by a stronger dollar. Gold

falls as the dollar rises, as it is

denominated in the U.S. currency and is

sensitive to moves in the dollar.

U.S. crude inventories rise

unexpectedly as imports jump: EIA:

- U.S. crude stocks rose last week as

imports jumped, while gasoline stocks

decreased and distillate inventories rose,

the Energy Information Administration

said on Wednesday. Crude inventories

rose by 3.8 million barrels in the week

to July 27, compared with analysts'

expectations for a decrease of 2.8

million barrels. Gasoline stocks fell by

2.5 million barrels.
