MORPHOLOGY OF HETERODERA FILIPJEVI

FROM SERBIA

Belgrade, 2012.

Nematology Laboratory, Institute for Plant Protection and Environment, Belgrade, Serbia,

INTRODUCTION

Cereals were grown in Serbia since the first

humans came, data from the 14th century and

Marko Kraljević mentioned wheat growing

Nowadays, wheat, barley, triticale & oats are

grown on ca: 600 000 ha and maize on 1,3M ha

The most globaly recognized and economically

important nematode on wheat is Cereal Cyst

Nematode (CCN) complex. Three main species

Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi & H. latipons

are the most economically important

INTRODUCTION

In our country only H. avenae was recorded

Heterodera filipjevi is a new economically

important parasite on wheat for Serbia

The morphology of cysts and second stage

juveniles (J2) of H. filipjevi are described

MATERIAL & METHODS

Heterodera filipjevi cysts were found in soil

samples from Gunaroš (Vojvodina province)

Cysts were extracted with Spears apparatus &

collected on 150 mm sieve, J2 by dissection

Identification by morphology: cyst body length

L, width W, L/W ratio, fenestral length l,

width w, l/w ratio, vulval bridge length &

width, underbridge length, presence of bullae,

J2 length & width, stylet length & shape, tail

length & width, hyaline tail length

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

Cysts are lemon shaped with posterior

protuberance, golden brown

Vulval cone is bifenestrate with horseshoe-

shaped semifenestra, bullae & underbridge

J2 has an offset head, stylet with anchor-

shaped basal knobs

Posterior region of J2 has tapering tail with a

rounded tip

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

Comparison of mean J2 characters (mm)

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

The shortest juveniles from Norway, the

longest from Oregon (USA)

The longest stylet from Turkey, the shortest

from Serbia

The longest tail from Serbia, the shortest tail

has type population

The longest hyaline portion of the tail has

Gunaroš population, the shortest hyaline has

population from Iran

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

Comparison of mean cyst characters (mm)

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

All populations except from UK have L/W

ratio higher than specimens from Serbia

The highest fenestral length has Turkey, the

lowest from Norway; the highest fenestral

width from Serbia, the lowest from Norway

The longest vulval slit from Serbia, the

shortest has type population

The longest underbridge Serbia, the shortest

Oregon

CONCLUSIONS

In relation to type population, J2 from Serbia

are longer, have the longer tail and hyaline

portion of tail and a shorter stylet.

Cyst morphometrics regarding fenestral

length & width, vulval slit and underbridge

comparing to type population are greater.

Only cyst length/width ratio is smaller.

H. filipjevi is designated the most economically

important species of CCN complex, important

for Serbian phytosanitary regulation.
