Once upon a time there was ...

Tourism began with the construction of the “Grand Hôtel”.

Rumour has it that Morzine began its relationship with tourism thanks to the considerate persistance of several senior officials in Geneva who had fallen in love with the town, nestled in the depths of the Aulps valley with its gently undulating slopes of mountain pasture and sheer cliff faces.

The first tourist hotel built in the 1920s, the “Grand Hôtel”, and its owner, François Baud, truly opened the door to a new era in village life. Welcoming summer holidaymakers was like a breath of fresh air for the inhabitants, who lived modestly by farming and by working in the slate mines, which were already in decline.

1934: THE INAUGURATION OF THE PLENEY CABLE CARIncreasingly intrepid tourists were gradually attracted by winter. The thick mantle of snow was a great excuse for indulging in games and sliding activities which gave them unprecedented sensations: sledging, skijoring, the beginnings of Alpine skiing and even ski jumping !

In 1934, Morzine inaugurated the Pléney cable car with great pomp. At the time, it was used for walking and enjoying views over the Alps, while skiing was limited to the reassuring valley pastureland.

1960: THE CREATION OF AVORIAZWinter sports were developing continually, so Morzine’s inhabitants decided to create a ski area at altitude after equipping the Pléney, Nyon and Chamossière mountains.

In 1960, Jean Vuarnet took over the management of the resort, aiming to capitalise on the Avoriaz mountains. A “little Savoyard Colorado” with mimetic architecture was built in close collaboration with Champéry and les Crosets. This led to creation of the Portes du Soleil ski area and gave Morzine-Avoriaz its combined identity, linking tradition and modernity.

MORZINE TODAYMorzine today is the spitting image of the historic town; it has kept its typical character while taking a careful approach to opening up to tourism. Its traditional warm welcome has been handed down from generation to generation. Morzine has also retained its way of life, which is delicious in every sense of the word, epitomising the living heritage of a farming community, with mountain traditions, typical Savoy recipes and its own dialect, still spoken by the older members of the community. Come and savour Morzine’s way of life, which is part of the everyday experience.
