Rising 450 feet over the narrowest and deepest point of the Rhine River, Loreley is a rock formation of legendary proportions. There are many folktales, legends and balladssurrounding the slate cliff, including a talethat treasure-guarding gnomes once dwelledin Loreley’s echoing caves.
Fast-flowing currents in a narrow rivermade this stretch of river infamous during theMiddle Ages. Loreley has stood witness tomany ships that crashed into her rocks duringthat time.
In the early 1800s, German authorClemens Brentano composed a ballad inwhich a lovesick maiden plummets to herdeath from the top of Loreley. In the 1820s,German poet Heinrich Heine adapted thetheme for his poem, “Die Loreley.” In Heine’swork, shipmen are seduced by a golden-hairedsiren singing on the top of the cliff. As shecombs her long locks, the men are distractedand fatally crash into Loreley’s rocks.
Germany produces some of the world’sfinest wines, many derived from the Rieslinggrape that grows along the steep, terraced, south-facing slopes that rise from the Rhineand Mosel rivers and their tributaries.
Insulated by wooded hills and warmed by the sun’s reflection on the waters below, many of these vineyards were carefully cultivated by the Romans. Despite the relatively cool climate, monks and nobleestates carried on the tradition, perfectingwinemaking here and exporting highly covetedvintages via the Rhine during medieval times.
In the 1970s, Germany’s reputation forwinemaking suffered when sweet blendedwines flooded the market. Today, Germany’spremier winemakers are setting the recordstraight by producing award-winning, sophisticated and food-friendly Rieslings, aswell as Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Sekt,German sparkling wine.
