Principal’s Report

Vale Sandi Ridewood

Moss Vale High School community held a special memorial assembly for Mrs Sandi Ridewood

last week. Sandi had been a much-loved teacher in our Special Education unit for the past two

years, and was diagnosed with cancer in June of last year. Sandi had a gentle and

compassionate nature, and went out of her way to help all students and staff. Sandi never once

complained about the severe pain that she was experiencing and always maintained a joyous

approach to her teaching. Kristal Beers and Michelle Haynes spoke eloquently at the memorial

about their teacher and the incredible difference she made to their lives.

On behalf of our school community I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Sandi’s

husband, Martin, and her two children, Taylor and Toby.

Start of the Year

We have had a really positive and smooth start to the school year with all students looking fantastic in full school uniform and

generally appearing to be very happy to be back at school. Year 7 students participated in an ‘Introduction to High School’

program on their first day to ensure that they were comfortable and familiar with their new educational environment, and clearly

understood our values and expectations. I do, however, ask that parents support our efforts in enforcing our uniform policy. I

have had the argument that, ‘we care more about uniform than education’. I can assure all parents that we care deeply about

each student’s education, but learning to abide by rules and dress codes are all part of a child’s life education.

As many of you would know, Mr O’Brien and Mr McGill retired at the end of last year and this has resulted in some changes. Mr

Matt Carlyon is now our substantive Deputy Principal and he has hit the ground running, and is doing an outstanding job. Mr Luke

Vandenbergh has also officially stepped into the Head Teacher PDHPE role as well as retaining his Year 12 Adviser position until

the Year 12 students leave at the end of term three. Mr Matt Nash is the Acting Head Teacher HSIE. Ms Beth Quinn is currently

in a temporary position in Science, Ms Tenille Leet is in a temporary position in PDHPE, Mr Robert George is in a temporary

position in HSIE and Ms Cindy Pryma is currently replacing Ms Ridewood in the support unit. Mr Leslie Jackson has permanently

joined the Maths Faculty after Ms Sarah Bennett received a transfer closer to home. We are pleased to have Mrs Dea Cowen,

Ms Maddy Baard, Ms Felicity Curtis, Mrs Megan Reeves and Ms Debby Middleton back in long term temporary positions for

2017.

Kick off with Reading

We have been running the Kick off with Reading initiative for the past three years at Moss

Vale High School. The initiative involves presenting every student and staff member with a

common book so that the school community can engage in discussion and activities

around the core concepts of the book. This year we will be reading Turia Pitt’s Everything

to Live for and a note should have gone home to all parents. The core concepts in Turia’s

book relate to personal tragedy, challenges, building resilience and understanding that life

is worth living, no matter what the challenges are that we face. Turia was caught in the

midst of a bushfire during an ultra-marathon run in the Kimberley back in 2011. Her story is

one of strength and the triumph of the human spirit.

Parents received a note as there is minimal use of coarse language, particularly in the

chapter when Turia first comes out her induced coma and is dealing with severe pain and

trauma. There will be an alternative book offered to students if parents have serious

concerns about the language.

I would like to extend, on behalf of our school community, our gratitude to the P&C for

funding this worthwhile initiative so that we can focus on reading and important social

issues.

Introduction

Many parents and students would have already come to know me over the years. For those that haven’t, my

name is Matthew Carlyon and I have been teaching at Moss Vale High School for the last ten years (formally the

Head Teacher PDHPE). I have been fortunate enough to be part of and witness the transformation of our school

into the exceptional place it is today. School culture, student and teacher expectations, uniform, school pride,

community connections and the schools physical environment are just a few of the outstanding facets of Moss

Vale High School. I remember students years ago having no connection with the school, referring to it as “it’s just

Mossy High”. Now, students, staff, parents and the community are proud to say they are connected with Moss

Vale High School and drive the exceptional image that we hold in the community. Having seen how far the school

has come in the last ten years leaves me with a responsibility to continue driving the positive school culture. I

am thrilled to have been selected as the substantive Deputy Principal of Moss Vale High School and am

committed to work with students, parents and teachers to keep OUR school as the best high school in the

Southern Highlands.

Welcome Back!

A warm welcome back to all our school community, and especially our new enrolments at Moss Vale High

School! The message has been “business as usual!” It has been a fairly settled start to the school year, with the

highlight so far being the Swimming Carnival in which we had a record number of students attending. Students

braved the 35 degree heat and swam, danced and cheered all day long. Congratulations to all the staff for

making it such a successful day, and especially the PDHPE team for the organisation of the carnival.

Uniform

There have been a small number of uniform problems that I am working with parents and students to address. A

few points that have arisen

- School shoes must be black leather enclosed shoes

- Boys grey pants with elasticised bottoms ARE NOT school uniform

- Bulky necklaces and pendants are not to be worn

- Due to WHS requirements, all piercings must be discreet, with NO sharp or dangerous attachments

With school photos just around the corner, I encourage any students or parents with any uniform enquiries to

give me a call to discuss.

Wellbeing Coordinator

Schools in general are seeing a rise in wellbeing needs for their students. Moss Vale High School is committed to

wellbeing of the whole school community and we have made some changes to the Wellbeing Coordinator role.

Sharlene Killian will continue as the Wellbeing Coordinator and will work closely with myself and Year Advisers in

matters relating to wellbeing. She will work out of the room next to the Deputy’s office and will be accessible to

students who self-report or are referred. More often than not, much of the discipline issues that arise have an

underlying wellbeing need, and we hope that this new arrangement meets the needs of our students. Any

parents wishing to discuss any wellbeing issues are encouraged to contact Sharlene or myself.

Thredbo Dirtsurfers

Over the sixteen years I’ve been taking activity groups away at Moss

Vale High School, this was probably my sixth time of taking one to

Thredbo where the mountains are large and the MTB trails leave you

wanting more. This year, I was joined by Mr “destroy that berm” Berman for the second time as well

as the company of ten boys ranging from Year 7 to year 11 for Thredbo Dirtsurfers.

We arrived on the Tuesday to magic Thredbo conditions. From the bottom of the mountain, the boys

where looking very intimidated by the size of the mountain they would be taking on tomorrow. After

trying out the bobsled, (similar to the one at Jamberoo Recreation Park), they filled up for dinner in

preparation to take on the infamous Cannonball Run. On waking up, the boys discovered that alpine

weather could be most fickle with the cloud cover coming in and the rain hitting the roof of our

accommodation. In perfect time, however, it cleared so the boys could get on their very cool and

expensive rented Giant Glory downhill bikes. After been shown the techniques of downhill riding and

being put through a skills course, the boys loaded their bikes onto the chairlift and headed to the

summit of the mountain which still had patches of snow. After some minor spills, the boys developed

more confidence with each run with some improving considerably during the day. After, five or six

runs (each run being approximately 5km in total) the boys were exhausted and ready to grab some

dinner.

On the Wednesday, the Thredbo Dirtsurfers hired some cross country bikes and tested the multi

purpose Thredbo Valley Trail (TVT). The trail itself runs through some spectacular alpine country and

criss-crosses the Thredbo River eight times, on bridges that are built to withstand a once-in-a-

hundred-year flood. It is a lovely, flowing downhill trail with some steep uphill pinches. After avoiding

the odd snake, the boys rode the 20km down to Lake Crackenback and enjoyed the bus ride back to

Thredbo. In the afternoon, they enjoyed a swim and slide at the Indoor Leisure centre as well as a

game of basketball and table tennis. The boys’ appetites were satisfied with a big feed of pizza after a

couple of days of hard riding. That tiredness showed as it was a very early night for most of them

before the bus ride home to Moss Vale High School the next day.

It was a pleasure to take this group of boys away. Their ages ranged considerably although they were

all friends by the end. One of the big pluses of Activity Week is that they make new friends outside

their year group. Both Mr Berman and myself are looking forward to taking the next bunch of

dirtsurfers.

Most Memorable moments at Thredbo:

Sascha Marold - Riding through the mountains to Lake Crackenback, going down the berms and catching others

on camera crashing.

Lane Crimmins - Riding the 20km track and at the half way mark there was a snake on the road and the

instructor and I crashed and I ran into a tree.

Riley Hurford - Getting off the chairlift after Sascha and I were swaying with the wind and I missed the cable

poles by 20cm.

Linden Bogdanovic - Missing about four parts of the flow trail by accidentally going down the mountain, nearly

setting the quickest time ever before making the executive decision to completely dive off the bike.

Blake Emmerick – Riding to Lake Crakenback, picking up lots of speed and suddenly stopping due to a

copperhead snake along the track which I almost face planted into, plus the part where I went over the

handlebars and was caught on Sascha’s Go Pro.

Zac Anthon - riding down the flow trail and doing all of the berms and jumps

Matthew Kelly - Hitting the massive jumps at the end of the flow trail and clearing them perfectly, except for the

last jump I did when the wind caught me and pushed me far right. I also went over the handle bars after going

into a berm too low and came out to high and flew over the top.

Moss Vale High School is a proud uniform wearing school. This is in accordance with the Department of

Education policy and the collaboration of the whole school community, that is, students, parents and families

(represented by the P & C) and staff.

Wearing school uniform presents a positive public image to the community of our school. School uniform also

fosters a safer school environment by enabling students to be easily identified. All students are expected to

wear full school uniform every day.

The uniform (clothing) supplier is Daylight Sportswear Pty Ltd. Please do not purchase substitute clothing

SHOES

The Work, Health and Safety requirement of the Department of Education, for all areas of the school, is that students wear fully enclosed firm leather school shoes with a leather tongue. · This includes solid leather top and tongue (this is requirement even on mufti days).

The school colour for shoes is black, no coloured trims or logos. · Leather shoes have to be brought to school on sports days.

The uniform standard reinforces modesty including the use of minimal makeup and jewellery.

JEWELLERY

The wearing of jewellery (including piercing), neck chains and leather cords, bracelets etc is discouraged. If

worn, it must be unobtrusive.

“Due to WH & S requirements, Piercings that have the potential to cause injury are not to be worn at school (this

includes large studs and rings etc). Discreet studs can be worn.” For safety reasons, earrings must be either

small studs or small sleepers. Large ear jewellery, nose rings and other body studs are unacceptable.

Note, facial piercing of any kind is NOT part of the uniform code.

MAKEUP

Makeup is to be unobtrusive. There is to be no excessive use of bright lipstick, heavy eyeliner, eye shadow, nail

polish etc.

HAIR AND ACCESSORIES

For practical reasons and safety, hair is to be worn in a way that meets WH & S requirements. Headbands and

bandanas are not part of the uniform code. If wearing ribbons and scrunchies, these are to be plain navy blue

and unobtrusive.

Gold Coast 2016

Activity Week Gold Coast 2016 was an epic adventure packed with many awesome moments to hang out with friends, experience new ( and sometimes scary) things and just to have fun in general. Beginning with an awesome plane trip with everyone together wearing their trendy new Gold Coast T’s, the crew set out to discover new horizons. Tallebudgera Sport and Rec Camp was the first stop after landing and then it was off to Pacific Fair Shopping Mall. Besides getting lost in the craziness of the massive shopping centre, we were all able to enjoy quality time with our friends over

some interestingly hilarious window-shopping and some dining of the ‘higher’ classes.

The next few days were all fun in the sun consisting of visits to Wet ‘n’ Wild, Movie World and Sea World. In my opinion Wet ‘n’ Wild was the most legendary adventure with the ‘heart racing’ Calypso Beach river tube ride, the ‘leisurely’ Aqua loop and the sleepy bus ride home full of teens mourning the loss of their pale skin and exclaiming

at the new shade of red that seemed to have somehow, totally without reason, overtaken the majority of their bodies. Movie world was also amazing fun with and holds some amazing memories including meeting superheros, sweltering in lines for the Arkham Asylum, getting the ‘new and improved’ wind swept hair-do from the Superman, experiencing the ‘gripping’ Looney Tunes 4D movie, marvelling at merchandise and ‘pretending to scream because it was too cool to actually be scared’ on practically every ride. Sea World was the last theme park we visited and was also the most laid back however we all still had a memorable day getting pictures with bigger than life sea creatures, watching dolphins dance, giggling as penguins waddled around and seemed to enjoy falling on their faces in front of you, eating extremely expensive ice cream that melted so fast you would have thought it was

running a race, watching the pro’s take it away on Jet Skis and pretending to be just as cool riding on the Jet Ski children’s ride.

However the theme parks were only half the fun. Our supervising teachers had obviously been on this activity before hand and had compiled a list of ‘traditions’ that made their way into our Gold Coast 2016 trip. One of these classics was entitled ‘meal time grace’, in which the most eloquent performance involved everyone closing their eyes, bowing their heads, standing up, holding hands and performing various actions while Hannah praised the gods for the fine weather and minimal sunburn. Other awesome memories included stand up paddle boarding in the estuary, sunset/night walks down at the beach, the food, party night, all the riddles and card tricks that had everyone so annoyed and thinking harder than we had all year, our loud and ‘highly in tune’ Christmas carol screaming as we walked down to get cold rock ice cream on the last night, party night where the teachers handed out awards for various things including best meal time grace, heaviest/lightest baggage and the redskin award to name a few

sports night and the high school musical sing-a-longs on the bus trips everywhere.

All in all Gold Coast 2016 was the most adventurous, hilarious, memorable and positive activity week that I had ever been on. The students, teachers, accommodation, activities, food, location and transport was all amazing and every last part was fun. There

were some very tired, yet happy kids on the flight home, but it was an awesome time and everyone, teachers included, had a ball.

Learning and Support has had a busy and exciting start to 2017. For the first time, our Year

7 cohort has not been pre-arranged into permanent classes. By beginning with temporary

classes, we have had the opportunity to test all Year 7s to establish their literacy and

numeracy skills after the long summer break, as well as to observe the dynamics of the

classes and social interactions. Armed with this data, we have consulted with teachers to

develop classes which we feel will best answer the individual learning needs of the students.

Students will enter their permanent classes on Monday of Week 4.

The Learning and Support department is found in the school library, along with our Careers

Adviser, IT department and our Head Teacher of Quality Learning. Mrs Janeen Pepping

continues as Learning and Support teacher, joined this year by Miss Felicity Curtis. At the

heart of the department are our Student Learning Support Officers: Irene Jones, Pauline

Emerson, Leslie Tarabay and Judi Wilson.

Learning and Support at Moss Vale High School aims to ensure every student at the school

has the opportunity and necessary support to become independent, successful learners.

The Learning and Support Department works collaboratively with the student, their

parents/carers and their teachers to develop the best approach to reach this goal.

Trout Fishing 2016

Trout Fishing lived up to its name in 2016 with a record twelve trout

caught. Most were returned to the river, but three beauties were

cooked in lemon and butter – delectable! It was a great trip and

fitting last adventure for our illustrious leaders James McGill and

Craig O’Brien. These two wonderful men have been organising this

activity for over a decade, maybe two (it was hard to get a straight

answer to that one) and what a great adventure it is. Not only can

those who are serious about freshwater fishing experience the

beautiful clear waters of the Swampy Plains River (unfortunate

name), they can also camp in a magnificent landscape (it is actually

featured in Sir David Attenborough’s ‘Mammals’ series) with a

plethora of birdlife and kangaroos abound.

Even if you aren’t into fishing you can enjoy a number of other pursuits. This year we had Amy Webb and her dad,

David, taking advantage of the surroundings to hone their photography skills. Jamie Lee, Cameron Webb and

Maxx Mitchinson read and discussed every Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Star Trek movie ever

made (or at least that is how it sounded to me). Ethan Sercombe, a capable fisherman, also proved his talent in

burrito eating setting a new camp record. Students swam, bush walked, played games, took part in some off

road 4WD action, talked, ate and even did some educational sightseeing of the hydroelectricity scheme. What

more could you possibly want out of an activity?

All this is possible because of the generous support of the parents who come along on the trip. These men give

up their time to transport students and gear as well as educate our young people in the ways of the bush and

fishing. Without them this activity would not be able to run. In particular I would like to thank Brian Harrison, who

along with his many entertaining tales, extensive knowledge of bushcraft and 4-wheel driving was also good

enough to organise a send-off for James and Craig that included gifts, cake, streamers and balloons.

Finally, Sean Young deserves special mention as the self-appointed camp leader. Sean was invaluable as a

mentor to the younger students and leader in many activities, also for keeping Alex Miller safe while he taught

him the basic skills of trout fishing.

On the February 6, Moss Vale High School's annual swimming carnival kicked off the carnival season

for 2017. A record number of students were in attendance at the pool with 540 athletes excited to

participate in the annual competition which contributes to the school house championship.

The Hinchcliffe brothers once again dominated in the pool, both advancing to the zone

championships as age champions for the third year running. Megan Schweers was the dominant girl

in the pool winning every single race she entered. The NSW country representative will be out to

dominate in the pool at the zone championship on February 23 at Queanbeyan swimming centre.
