Year 4A 4A students read the quest novel “Rowan of Rin” by Emily Rodda. Their task was to explain how Emily Rodda represented Rowan in the final chapter.

Rowan of Rin The title of the quest novel is Rowan of Rin and the author is Emily Rodda. The important event I have chosen is Chapter 13 when Rowan and Jonn reached the top of the mountain, found the answer and finished Rowan and Jonn’s quest in the dragon’s lair. When Rowan leans into the dragon’s mouth, he delicately tugs on the bone because he realises it’s in pain. I know this because in the book he says “”recognises dumb animal pain.” It also shows he is brave and loyal because he had a chance to run away, but he did not take it. Emily Rodda uses verbs, noun groups and prepositional phrases such as “he screamed, waiting for the claws that meant death.” He also spoke in a “low voice.” This shows he is scared. Rowan also uncovered his eyes fearfully. He told the dragon to “be still.” He knew it would listen because it was in so much pain. I think this is an important event in the story because it’s when he solves the whole quest and the stream flows once more. Even Jonn admitted that Rowan did it all. He said “It was Rowan that brought me home.” Taite McLean

Rowan of Rin The title of the quest novel is “Rowan of Rin” and the author of the quest novel is “Emily Rodda.” The important event I have chosen is Chapter 13 when Strong Jonn and Rowan had met the dragon at its lair. The dragon had a ginormous bone stuck in its throat. The dragon was really aggressive. Rowan was the bravest heart because he walked into the dragon’s mouth to get the bone out of its throat. Rowan threw away all thoughts of home e.g. compass, map and saved Strong Jonn from the dragon eating him. “You have not been eating” Rowan crooned as if he were talking to Star. This tells me that Rowan is scared but talking to the dragon as if he was talking to Star. “Rowan the dragon is trying to scare you off” says Strong Jonn. This also tells me that Strong Jonn thinks that Rowan won’t make it himself. He thinks that Rowan should go before the dragon loses his patience. Emily Rodda uses words to describe Rowan such as “poor skinny little rabbit” that describes that she says that Rowan is skinny, little and poor. I think that this event is important because this is the event that tells you the answer and tells you how the

water came back to the village. I think that Emily Rodda makes Rowan weak and useless at the start so that the reader thinks that Rowan wouldn’t make it up the mountain. By Lani Enoch

Rowan of Rin The title of the quest novel is Rowan of Rin and the author is Emily Rodda. The important event I have chosen is chapter 13 when Rowan and Strong Jonn were at the dragon’s lair. The dragon has a bone stuck in its throat and is very aggressive. Rowan leaned into the dragons “red dripping mouth” and gently dislodged the bone. This shows Rowan is a brave caring boy. Meanwhile Strong Jonn is pinned to the wall. Strong Jonn tells Rowan to leave and let him die but Rowan refuses. Emily Rodda uses verbs, prepositional phrases and noun groups to represent Rowans behaviour. The verbs “screamed” and “uncovered his eyes fearfully” show Rowan is terrified of the dragon. Rowan realises the dragon’s scars showing us that Rowan understands the dragon’s pain. Afterwards the

dragon scorched the ice making the water gush down the tunnel taking Rowan and Strong

Jonn with it. This is an important event because

it solves the problem of there being no water in Rin. Star does not drink until she knows Rowan is safe. This shows she is loyal and cares for Rowan There is now

water in Rin and the Bukshah will not die of dehydration. “Star

lowered her head at last, to drink. By Jai Schwarzer

Rowan of Rin

The title of the quest novel is Rowan of Rin and the author is Emily Rodda, the important event I have chosen is chapter 13, The Answer. Rowan had lots of courage when Jonn said “Rowan it’s trying to scare you of, get out for Jiller’s sake if not yours. But Rowan would not give in. Emily Rodda uses verbs, prepositional phrases and noun groups that describes Rowan’s actions feelings and thoughts such as “Rowan screamed and uncover his eyes,” this shows that he is scared. “The icy floor of the lair” tells us that it is cold. “Rowan saw it, and in amazement he recognised it for what it was: dumb animal pain. He slowly got to his feet, never breaking his gaze. What ails you? He said quietly, in the voice he used for the bukshah.” this shows that he has a special connection with animals.” Back away slowly and go.” This shows Rowan is brave by using his language.
