“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Sept. 15-16, 2018◆

Mark 8:27-35 Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ, and Jesus teaches that those who would follow him must take up his or her cross.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s reading is the turning point in Mark’s Gospel. In the presentation of the life and ministry of Jesus found in the Gospel of Mark, the deeds of Jesus have shown Jesus to be the Son of God. Yet many, including Jesus’ disciples, have not yet realized his identity. In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the disciples for a field report by asking what others say about him. He then turns the question directly to the disciples and asks what they believe. Peter speaks for all of them when he announces that they believe Jesus to be the Christ.

The word Christ is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word for Messiah, which means “the anointed one.” At the time of Jesus, the image of the Messiah was laden with popular expectations, most of which looked for a political leader who would free the Jewish people from Roman occupation. Jesus does not appear to have used this term for himself. As we see in today’s reading, Jesus refers to himself instead as the Son of Man, a term derived from the Jewish Scriptures, found in the Book of Daniel and in other apocryphal writings. Many scholars suggest that the phrase Son of Man is best understood to mean “human being.”

Now that the disciples have acknowledged Jesus as the Christ, Jesus confides in them the outcome of his ministry: he will be rejected, must suffer and die, and will rise after three days. Peter rejects this prediction, and Jesus rebukes him severely. The im-age of Christ that Jesus is giving is not the image of the Messiah that Peter was expecting. Jesus then teaches the crowd and the disciples about the path of discipleship: To be Chris’s disciple is to follow in the way of the cross.

We can easily miss the fear that Jesus’ words must have evoked in his disciples. Death by crucifixion was all too familiar as a method of execution in Roman-occupied territories. It was also an omnipresent danger to the Christian community for whom Mark wrote. The path that Jesus was inviting his disciples to share meant tremendous suffering and death. This is the kind of radical commitment and sacrifice that Jesus calls us to adopt for the sake of the Gospel.

What’s Happening at Most Holy Redeemer: We’re going Solar!

October “Spooktacular” Cash Calendar

We have already begun to collect raffle tickets for our October Cash Calendar. Don’t forget you can pick up tickets at both church entrances, or you can stop by the office during the week. A mailing should come to your home before the end of September.

MHR has joined a free community solar farm located in nearby Southwick, MA. The program is open to renters, home-owners, and businesses, as a way to save on electricity costs. Electricity will be generated from our spot in the solar farm and sent to Eversource. In turn, MHR will receive credits on our electric bill, reducing our costs. We didn’t have to pay anything to join. The company responsible for managing the solar farm, Ampion, will bill us monthly for the credits we receive at 10% less than we would have paid Eversource. The result is clean, local energy at a 10% discount. Parishioners are invited to join the community solar farm, as well, for the same 10% discount on their bills. In addition to reduc-ing your electricity costs, Ampion will also make a $25. donation to MHR for everyone who signs up. The first 100 subscribers will receive their first month’s worth of credits for free! For more information and to find out how you can join, please contact: Brian Buzby by phone 781-307-3205 or by email [email protected]

THANK YOU SEPT. WEEKEND MEALS VOLUNTEERS!

Bernice Baranowski, Aidan Michalak (MHR Confirmation student), Donna Paddock, and Louise Slysz prepared a meal of baked ziti, salad, and bread for 28 Hadley residents on Sun-day, Sept. 9. Meal recipients were once again treated to various desserts made by MHR parishioners for our parish picnic and brownies made by Ed Dudkiewicz. (These items had been fro-zen so they could be used for the Weekend meal.) Meals were delivered by drivers Rick & Sheryl Brighenti, Sandy Went-worth Miller, MaryAnn Mish and Diane Stengle. Thank you to all for hearing and responding to God’s call to serve your neighbors.

i.d.9:16 Meeting UPDATE

Approximately 25 individuals attended the first i.d. 9:16 meeting at MHR on September 6. The Mass was cele-brated by newly ordained Father Frank Furman. Fa-ther Burke Masters (chaplain to Chicago Cubs) spoke about his conversion as well as how his ministry has been formed around both the diocese and the team. A delicious dinner (prepared by a couple of people in the group) included: ribs, pulled chicken, pulled pork, baked potatoes, salad, bread. For dessert there were brownies and peach cobbler. — A spiritually and physi-cally satisfying evening!—

Note to Parishioners: If you would like to have ac-curate end-of year statements for your taxes, please use your collection envelopes. They contain the nec-essary information for proper recording of contri-butions. If envelopes are not used, we cannot ensure accu-rate data entry. Your help is greatly appreciated!
