POPULAR SPECIAL INTERESTSImages of gauchos, the tango, and the world’s thickest steaks, first come to mind when considering the land known as Argentina. Of course, the country’s attractions are far more numerous, and from its subtropical north to its sub-Antarctic southern tip, they spread over an area nearly one third the size of Europe.

The ‘Paris of South America’, Buenos Aires is the cosmopolitan center with strong European charm. Lovers of the arts can enjoy its numerous museums, a show at the renowned Teatro Colon, or of course, as the home of the tango, a dinner show is almost expected. Outside of the city indulge in an Argentinian ‘asado’ hosted by local ‘gauchos’ after a day of horseback riding.

Iguazu Falls is one of the great natural wonders of the world. Shared with Brazil, you can view the falls from numerous vantage points with the most thrilling by boat within the Devil’s Throat itself. The surrounding area offers a genuine jungle experience which is home to a vast wildlife.

Argentina’s northern regions, Tucuman, Jujuy, and Salta are known for their pre-Columbian archeology, high Andean peaks and subtropical rain forests, as well as salt flats. Often forgotten among Argentina’s numerous ‘must-see’ sites, time spent here will not be in vain.

At the foothills of the Andes, Mendoza is in the heart of the wine country. Be

prepared to eat well while indulging in some of the best Vinos around. Mendoza also attracts the world’s best climbers looking to take on South America’s highest peak, Aconcagua, and also offers white water rafting and horseback riding.

Gateway to the Lake District, Bariloche offers scenery reminiscent of the Alps, while offering the avid outdoorsman plenty to do from, hiking, skiing, fishing, biking, sailing and more. Bariloche also serves as the eastern point of lake crossings to Chile thru the southern lakes.

Encompassing the southern half of the country your inner explorer will be set free in the Patagonia. El Calafate offers an ideal staging area to visit Los Glaciers National

Park, with over a dozen glaciers. Hikers can access El Chalten and the majestic Mt. Fitz Roy for adventure & trekking. Or, head west to the Chilean Patagonia and Torres Del Paine National Park.

On the coast visit Puerto Madryn, Punta Tombo & Peninsula Valdes, home to the Magellan penguins, sea lions and whale watching.

The Southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. A picturesque city by the sea inviting hikers, climbers, and even skiers. It also serves as a launch point for expedition cruises to the fjords of Chile, the Strait of Magellan, and most notably the southernmost continent, Antarctica.

BRAZILBrazil is a gem of a country, with sights, sounds and people to match. Sao Paulo is

its economic center, Salvador its spiritual heartland, the Pantanal /Amazon its wildlife

wonderland, and Rio de Janeiro its essence and super-star.

Many say Rio de Janeiro is a state of mind, and no two people will describe it the

same. That is the beauty of Rio. Whether it’s the music, the dance, the people, or its

unique cityscape viewed from atop Sugarloaf or Corcovado, you will return home

wondering why you had waited so long to visit.

For the more tranquil, explore the coastal

towns of Buzios and Angra dos Reis. Relax

and enjoy the beautiful scenery from one

of the many charming bed and breakfasts

along picturesque coastlines.

Brazil’s colonial past is very much alive in

Salvador de Bahia, where its echoes are

still very vibrant with its Brazilian-Afro

heritage. Salvador is also home to the

largest Carnival in the world!

One of Brazil’s most famous attractions,

and shared with Argentina, is Iguassu

Falls, a natural wonder to be seen up close.

Here you can also revel in the splendor of

its natural forests, rivers and lakes, as well

as the world’s 2nd largest hydroelectric

work, the Itaipu Dam.

Another jewel of Brazil is the region Belo

Horizonte, Ouro Preto, Marinas, Tiradentes,

and San Jao do Rey, which will bring you

back to Brazil’s 18th century golden age.

Each with its own history, with colonial

architecture very much alive, cobble stones

streets and wrought iron lanterns, antique

stores and arts to fill a museum.

For lovers of surf & sand, Brazil is most

definitely a destination blessed. All along its

Northeast coast you’ll find miles of pristine

shoreline from Recife to Natal, and further

north to Fortaleza. In this spirit, Fernando

de Noronha, the archipelago located off the

coast boasts one of Brazil’s best beaches

and is a must for the serious scuba diver.

Adventure seekers looking for something

off the beaten path, need not worry.

Whether it’s exploring the lowland plains of

the Pantanal by horseback or cruising deep

into the Amazon jungle by dugout canoe,

you are in for quite the adventure. Exotic

flora and fauna is everywhere you turn...

don’t forget your camera!

Towering snow-capped Andean peaks, long stretches of beach, a forested lake district

scenic countries on the continent.

The stylish capital of Santiago welcomes visitors with English style coffee houses and

sophisticated restaurants. From its centralized location you have easy access to Chile’s wine

region which is on par with the world best, or head west to the coastline and Vina del Mar.

This well- known resort area attracts the

regions writers and performers, as well as,

the wealthy who make their summer home

on the fashionable hillsides looking over

the Pacific so they can enjoy the beach,

casinos, and exiting nightlife. In contrast,

Valparaiso is a quaint city closely located up

the coast offering its colorful hillside homes

and amazing views.

Considered the driest place on earth,

the Atacama Desert in the north of Chile

offers travelers one of the most unique

landscapes anywhere. This high desert

region offers volcanoes, active geysers,

salt lakes, and ancient archeological sites.

With exceptional conditions, this region is

also a global center for ‘astro-tourism’.

Home to one third of world’s telescopes,

it’s a must-see for any avid star gazer.

With Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, Petrohue,

and Chiloe Island we find ourselves in the

Lake District of the northern Patagonia. This

region of snowcapped volcanoes, lakes,

and rivers is among the most picturesque

in South America attracting photography

buffs and avid outdoorsmen alike.

For the explorers in all of us the Patagonia

is the ultimate destination described best

by its first explorers and naturalists: exotic,

remote, vast, infinitely beautiful, wild and

untamable.

From it’s of snow-capped peaks, lakes, ice

fields that give way to majestic glaciers

and the splendor of mountains like Torres

del Paine. It’s just you and the wild nature

that serves as a backdrop to such diverse

activities as fly-fishing, trekking, cycling,

mountain climbing, rafting, kayaking and

horseback riding.

From Punta Arenas, with a rich history

dating back to when the first pioneers came

from Europe, you can cruise to Cape Horn

thru rivers and the huge maze of fjords and

canals that are home to dolphins and whales.

The most remote inhabited island on the

planet Easter Island is home to the Moai

statues that bore witness to the rise and fall

of its complex culture. Getting away from it

all takes on a whole new meaning!

Straddling the equator, Ecuador is aptly named, for its sits squarely on the dividing

line between the northern and southern hemispheres. Embracing both the highland

Andean ranges and lowland Amazonian jungles, it is a small nation of great natural

beauty. Ecuador is also a country steeped in history, from pre-Columbian and colonial

past to the land of folkloric pageantry.

On the foot of the Pichincha Volcano, Quito maintains is colonial past which you can

enjoy visiting on a horse ridden buggy, the grandeur of the church of La Compañia,

with its altar bathed in gold leaf is a

site not to be missed. While in Quito a

day trip to Otavalo is like manna from

heaven for those shopaholics. There you

will find all kinds of knitted and woven

goods. The very proud people of Otavalo

will be happy to help you and make your

shopping experience worth the trip.

After an overnight at a typical Hacienda,

you will travel an exhilarating ride down

the Devils nose, arriving to Inca PIrca,

remands from the Inca Empire and

ending in Cuenca. Possibly the most

beautiful colonial city in Ecuador, Cuenca

is a beautiful city with its cobble stoned

streets and homes from days gone by

that will take you back in history.

Like many of its neighbors, Ecuador

also lays claim to part of the vast

Amazon basin. Whether cruising one of

the tributaries of the Amazon River or

enjoying the comfort of an upscale lodge

you can enjoy this mecca for birding and

discover rare wild life that exists here.

Guayaquil is this nation’s largest city

with a vast coastline, warm weather

and choice of beaches. As a teaser you

can visit Isla de la Plata, the ‘Poor Man’s

Galapagos’, where you can enjoy a preview

of what Galapagos Islands has to offer.

The Galapagos Islands, made famous by

Charles Darwin, is a must see for anyone

visiting Ecuador. Home to a diverse array

of both flora & fauna mostly unique to these

islands it is liken to a living laboratory. You

can view Galapagos penguins, Boobies,

Darwin finches, albatross, sea lions, land

& sea iguanas, of course giant tortoise,

One could divide Peru into three distinct regions; the Pacific coast deserts, with its

famous Nazca line drawings in the south to the pre-Inca archeological sites of Chan

Chan in the north; the Andean highlands, home to Inca outposts from Cuzco to Machu

Picchu to Lake Titicaca; and beyond the mountains, thousands of miles of jungle with

river ports beckoning visitors to the Amazon basin and jungle adventures.

Its capital, Lima, combines it’s colonial past with the elegance of days gone by, with

grand architecture and balconies from the Viceroy era, and the modern Lima showing

you the evolution of time with its mod-

ern buildings and beautiful parks. The

city today boasts renowned restaurants

offering their fusion of indigenous, Span-

ish, and Asian tastes, alongside some of

the best museums & art galleries in the

Americas.

Their origins and purpose still undefined

today, the Nazca markings in the south-

ern desert offer hundreds of ancient bio

morphs and geoglyphs, many only visible

from the air.

In the heart of the Andes, Cuzco was the

center of the Inca Empire, along with the

Sacred Valley and Machu-Picchu, the

lost city of the Incas. Overwhelming and

spectacular, from sunrise to sunset, an

experience never to be forgotten. Hiking

the famous Inca Trail is a special treat.

On the shores of Lake Titicaca, the high-

est navigable lake in the world, surround-

ed by snow-capped peaks, you’ll find the

home of the Floating Islands of Taquile,

where you can still see the way the local

Uros Indians use to live in the days of

the Incas. Lake Titicaca is a journey to

the past.

In the Northern region visit Trujillo &

Chiclayo, and the famous ruins of Chan-

Chan and Lord of Sipan. A pre-Inca

culture with its burial sites resembling

those of ancient Egypt. Along with the

ruins of the Kuelap archeological site in

Chachapoyas, this region offers visitors

an often forgotten insight onto Peru dy-

namic history.

Accessed from either Iquitos in the

north or Puerto Maldonado in the south,

the Peruvian Amazon is a thrill for any

adventurer. From jungle treks, to cai-

man spotting, piranha fishing, to bird

watching, enjoy the rainforests full ar-

ray of fauna and flora.

Lying in the extreme northwest corner of South America, Colombia is a gem of two

oceans: 500 miles of Pacific coastline and another 700 miles along the Caribbean.

The latter of these is the Emerald Coast, where the first European adventurers landed

in the 16th century in search of a New World full of riches. In the 21st century,

Colombia is a close-by country full of natural grandeur, historic colonial attractions,

and archaeological sites from an illustrious pre-Columbian past. And Colombia is the

place to at least consider taking home a bit of its national treasure: emeralds.

This is a land of fascinating indigenous cultures, traditions, and untouched natural beauty. Bolivia is spectacular, from its Andean peaks to its dense Amazon rainforests, volcano-rimmed Lake Titicaca to the salt lakes of Salar de Uyuni. Exploring pre-Inca ruins at Tiwanaku, strolling its Colonial capital of Sucre, biking the ‘World’s most dangerous road’, or birding in the rainforest, these are a few of the reasons Bolivia is a must-see.

Visiting its capital, Asuncion, you can tour it’s array of museums & architectural sites like the Cathedral, The Rivera Center which is a complex of restored homes to admire the 18 and 19 century Paraguay, each house with a story that summarizes the Paraguayan history. Traveling south to the tri-border region, tour Itaipu Dam, until recently the largest in the world. A must see though are the Jesuit Ruins of Trinidad de Parana.

The smallest nation in S. America, Uruguay offers its own attractions. Punta del Este, a famous resort area catering to the rich and famous. Likewise, Colonia is definitely a place to visit, walk around cobble stone streets with iron rod lanterns taking you back to the colonial era of the Portuguese. Like its neighbor to the west, Argentina, Uruguay is also known for its working estancias and definitely worth checking out.

ANTARCTICAThough its own continent, Antarctica’s connection to South America is cemented by its geographic proximity. Ushuaia (Argentina) & Punta Arenas (Chile) both serve as primary launch points for seasonal cruise expeditions to this land of extremes. This vast frozen land is considered by many as the coldest, driest and windiest place on earth. In spite of it all, Antarctica is home to an amazing variety of wildlife like seals, penguins, sea birds, Orcas, and Blue Whales.
