FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 10, 2011
You have crowned the year with your bounty, and your paths overflow with a rich harvest. — Psalm 65:12
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — My word will achieve the end for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:10-11). Psalm — The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest (Psalm 65). Second Reading — We, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves awaiting the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:18-23). Gospel — Some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit (Matthew 13:1-23 [1-9]).
GOD’S WORDS Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morn-ing, until the last moment of the day when the televi-sion is turned off or someone bids us “good-night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and atti-tudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus.

FEAST OF FAITH Invitation to the Eucharistic Prayer
After the presider washes his hands, he turns to the people and says, “Pray that our sacrifice may be accept-able to God the almighty Father.” We have brought forward bread and wine, and now we are asked to see in these simple gifts upon the altar a sacrifice offered to God. Our response is rich in theological meaning. “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands.” The words point to the unique role of the priest, whose hands, at his ordination, were anointed for just this purpose: that he might “sanctify the Christian people and offer sacrifice to God” (Rite of Ordination). We ask God to accept our sacrifice not because it is worthy of God, but simply “for the praise and glory of his name.” God does not need our offering, but allows us to give it so that we might grow in holiness. And God, never to be outdone in generosity, gives all that we have given back to us, “for our good and the good of all his Church.” This Mass benefits not just those who have gathered, but, in the mysterious economy of grace, the whole Church. In the words of Saint Paul, when one part rejoices, the whole body “shares its joy” (1 Corin-thians 12:26).

LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — La palabra de Dios siempre cumple lo que Él quiere (Isaías 55:10-11). Salmo — Los granos que caen en la tierra buena darán una cosecha abundante (Salmo 65 [64]). Segunda lectura — Toda la creación anticipa ansiosa-mente la revelación de la gloria plena de Dios (Romanos 8:18-23). Evangelio — El que tenga oídos, que entienda y reciba las enseñanzas de Jesús (Mateo 13:1-23).
LAS PALABRAS DE DIOS Cada día somos bombardeados por miles de palabras. Desde el momento en que suena el despertador en la mañana, hasta el último momento del día cuando apa-gamos el televisor o alguien nos dice “buenas noches”, tenemos la vida llena de palabras. Algunas palabras nos traen noticias que nos deprimen. Algunas palabras nos levantan el espíritu. Muchas de las palabras que escuchamos tratan de hacernos comprar algo. Algunas palabras son hirientes. Hoy la Iglesia nos hace prestar atención a la Palabras de Dios. ¿Son las Palabras de Dios igual que las demás –parte de una corriente sin fin de palabras que fluyen por nuestro oídos todos los días? El reto hoy es permitir que las Palabras de Dios nos inspiren renovando nuestra perspectiva y actitudes para que estén en mayor consonancia con el corazón y la mente de Cristo Jesús.

FIESTA DE LA FE El dinero y otros dones
Durante la presentación de las ofrendas, junto con el pan y el vino se trae la colecta. El pan y el vino se lle-van al altar y el dinero se queda en un lugar apropiado. San Justino, en el siglo II, nos recuerda que al reunir-nos a celebrar la Eucaristía no podemos “dejar de pen-sar en los pobres y necesitados”; este mismo dinero se da para “los pobres o para la Iglesia” y “se considera también como dones” (IGMR, 73). El dinero como don, no es sucio y tiene mucho sentido compartirlo. No hay que compartir lo que sobra, eso es limosna; la caridad como una corresponsabilidad por el pobre y por las ne-cesidades de la Iglesia, sale desde el corazón. Damos a la Iglesia y a los pobres de lo que tenemos para vivir. Lo damos como agradecimiento por lo que hemos reci-bido. No damos limosna al pobre para desentendernos de él, de sus necesidades y luchas; vivimos la caridad con él o ella como hermano que es, damos desde el co-razón interesándonos por su calidad de vida, por su necesidad humana inmediata. Vivimos la caridad des-de la compasión, no desde la lástima como se hace con la limosna. Dar limosna empobrece; vivir la caridad enriquece, porque sale desde el corazón y, como la viu-da del Evangelio, damos cuanto tenemos para vivir.

Un Reto Para Cambiar En este tiempo del año es fácil ver el Evangelio de hoy en práctica. Los agricultores y jardineros sem-braron, sacaron la hierba mala, abonaron y rega-ron, y ahora comienzan a ver el fruto de su labor. Sembraron más semillas de las necesarias pues, aunque la naturaleza es generosa, no todas las semillas germinan. Nadie que acostumbra sem-brar plantas puede garantizar cuántas semillas van a germinar y producir su fruto. La parábola del sembrador, igual que todas las parábolas de Jesús, vira al revés la creencia común o popular y las reviste de nuevo significado. En los tiempos de Jesús se usaban las Escrituras judías para deta-llarle a los judíos la manera de vivir. Al judío que piadosamente cumplía la ley de Moisés se le ga-rantizaban muchas bendiciones. Sin embargo, y tal como frecuentemente lo demostró Jesús, cum-plir las reglas y vivir justamente no son la misma cosa. ¿Por qué la semilla de la palabra no da fruto en todas las personas que la escuchan? Jesús cita al profeta Isaías, quien describe a un pueblo que no oye porque ha endurecido su corazón y ha ce-rrado sus ojos. Jesús lo ve como una manera que usa la gente para protegerse a sí misma, pues si verdaderamente oyeran y verdaderamente vieran se tendrían que enfrentar con el reto de tener que
cambiar. Quizás escuchemos este pasaje del Evangelio como una cierta alusión a la complacencia, o también, es posible que escuchemos esta parábola como un relato bonito. Después de todo, la enten-demos bien y no somos como los demás. Pero, ¿es esto cierto? ¿Escuchamos ver-daderamente la palabra? ¿Tratamos de buscar el verdadero significado que tiene para nosotros? ¿Dejamos que eche raíces en el terreno bueno de nuestra vida o la echamos a un lado y dejamos que se as-fixie entre nuestras otras prioridades? Son discípulos los que riegan y alimen-tan la palabra recibida, y le piden a Jesús que produzca en ellos fruto abun-dante.

Living Stewardship Now Where has the word of God landed in the good
soil of your life, and how does it bear fruit? Where has it been choked out or lost?
Challenge To Change At this time of the year it is easy to see today’s Gospel in practice. Farmers and gardeners sowed, weeded, fertilized, and watered, and now begin to see the fruits of their labor. They sowed more seed than they actually needed, as nature is generous but also wasteful: no one who grows plants can tell you how many will survive and produce seed of their own. The parable of the sower, like all Je-sus’ parables, stands conventional wisdom on its head and offers layers of new meaning. In Jesus’ day, the way of righteousness was spelled out in the Jewish scriptures. The person who lived as a pious Jew, following the Law of Moses, could be assured of many blessings. Yet, as Jesus often demonstrated, following the rules and living the life are not the same thing. Why does the seed of the word not bear fruit in everyone who hears it? Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah, who describes people as dull of hearing with their eyes shut. Je-sus explains this as a form of self-protection. If people really hear and really see, they might have to change. We may hear this Gospel with a hint of complacency. It is possible to hear this parable and enjoy it as a simple tale. After all, we under-stand it, and we are not like the rest. But is this true? Do we really hear the word? Are we really s e e k i n g i t s meaning for us? Do we allow it to take root in the good soil in our lives, or do we push it to the edges or let it get choked out by other priorities? Disciples are the ones who water and nurture it, and ask Jesus to help them pro-duce abundant fruit.
