Reading Castle Tower Directions
Four Tower Elements TOWeR BASe - Make first.
Made from 6 RTOS and 3 RTTS blocks. It sits at the bottom of your Reading Castle Tower. (Make one.) Set aside for later use.
uPPeR TOWeR - make second.
Make from 3 RTTS, 6 RTLS and 3 RT2LS blocks. It fits on the Tower Base and on the Lower Tower. (Make one.) Slide on the base.
TOWeR ROOF - make third.
Made from 6 RTLS and 3 RT2LS blocks, and one Tower Roof. (Make one.) Create a small reading tower from these first three elements.
LOWeR TOWeR - make last.
Made from 6 RTOS and 6 RTTS blocks. The more you make, the higher your tower grows. Place between the Tower Base and the Upper Tower.
Tower Block Directions 1. Cut all dashed lines. Fold all straight
lines. (The RTLS is shown in the
photos, but the instructions are for all
of the following Round Tower Blocks:
RTOS, RTTS, RTLS, RT2LS.)
2. Place double-sided tape along the
folds of the “a” and “b” tabs. (I marked
these areas with yellow in the photo-
graph.)
3. Fold one “a” tab beneath the A Flap
(flap between the “a” tabs). Match the edge of the A Flap to the fold line of the
“a” tab.
4. Fold the other “a” tab beneath the A
Flap. match the edge of the A Flap to
the fold line of the other “a” tab.
5. Turn over the block. Fold and place
a finger between the two “b” tabs. Place the top “b” tab beneath the B Flap (flap between the “b” tabs). match the edge of
the B Flap to the fold line of the folded
“b” tab.
6. Remove your finger and press the remaining “b” tab beneath the B Flap.
match the edge of the B Flap to the fold
line of the folded “b” tab.
7. The RT2LS, RTLS, RTOS, or RTTS
block is now complete. Note: Some
parents and teachers
choose to use quick-
drying glue instead
of double-sided tape.
Tower Base Directionsmake 6 RTOS and 3 RTTS blocks (see
Tower Block directions) to make all nine
of these blocks for the Tower Base.
1. Glue the sides of two RTOS together.
Repeat for three sets of two. Let dry.
2. Glue the sides of two sets together. Let
dry.
3. Glue the third set to what is now a set
of four. This is called a ring. Let dry.
4. Take one RTTS and glue it over the
top of one RTOS so they are exactly
aligned in front and on the sides.
Print the block patterns and roof on
plain or colored copy paper. make the
patterns into blocks. These blocks will
be combined to make tower elements.
The elements, when put together, create
the Reading Castle Tower. Kids get one
block for every five minutes they read!

5. Repeat, but place the second RTTS
block and the third one so that there is a
space of one RTOS between each.
6. Your Tower
Base is complete.
Upper Tower Directionsmake 6 RTOS, 3 RTTS, 6 RTLS, and
3 RT2LS blocks (see Tower Block
Directions) to make these 18 blocks.
1. make a Tower Base, with the Tower
Base Directions (above), using 6 RTOS
and 3 RTTS. Let dry.
2. make a Tower Base, with the Tower
Base Directions (above), using 6 RTLS
and 3 RT2LS. Let dry.
3. Glue the flat side of each Tower Base that you just made together. The RTTS
ring and the
RTLS ring
won’t complete-
ly align, so
line up their
centers, not
their outside
edges. Let dry.
6. Your upper
Tower is complete.
Tower Roof Directionsmake 6 RTLS and 3 RT2LS blocks (see
Tower Block Directions) to make all 9 of
these blocks to make the Tower Roof.
1. make a Tower Base, with the Tower
Base Directions on the previous page, us-
ing 6 RTLS and 3 RT2LS. Let dry.
2. Find the Tower Roof pattern. Cut
along the dotted lines. Fold along all
straight lines. Place two-sided tape on
the Side Flap triangle. (I have marked
these areas with yellow, below.)
3. Place the Side Flap with the two-sided
tape on it beneath the triangle on the op-
posite edge of the pattern. Press the tape
to keep it in place. Refold bottom flaps.
4. Put glue
all along the top
edge of the Tower
Base you made
in step 1.
5. Set the cone roof on top of the flat sur-
face of the Tower Base so its flap touch the glue. Position the roof so the bottom
of each triangle aligns
with the top of each
block. The Tower
Roof is done. Let dry.
Lower Tower Directions
make 6 RTOS and 6 RTTS blocks (see
Tower Block Directions) to make all 12 of
these blocks for the Lower Tower.
1. make one Tower Base, with the Tower
Base Directions, using 6 RTOS and 3
RTTS blocks. Let dry.
2. Turn upside
down. Repeat steps
4 and 5 of the
Tower Base, but
on the opposite
side of the ring.
The three new
RTTS should alternate with the lower
RTTS so they are not stacked on top of
each other. Your Lower Tower element is
complete
Put Your Tower TogetherThe elements you’ve made stack on each
other. The first time you put tower elements together, carefully slide them
into place. If you combine the Tower
Base and the upper Tower, you will have
a small tower. As you add Lower Tower
elements between the Tower Base and
the upper Tower, your tower will grow.
Remember that
blocks put together by
children may not be
even and stick out in
places. That’s okay.
This merely makes the tower look more
weathered and rugged.
Fold-Your-Own Bookletmake a copy of the booklet at the end of
the file for your kids. Have them follow these directions to make their booklets:
1. Fold the sheet of paper in half the long
way. The printed side of the sheet should
be showing. unfold.
2. Fold the sheet of paper in half the
short way. The printed side of the sheet
should be showing.
3. Fold the lines that are halfway
between the center fold and the edge of
the paper into the middle; this time the
printed side will be on the inside. (The
short, outside edge, on either edge of the
sheet should be lined up with the center
fold.) unfold the outside edges only.
4. With a scissor, cut along the crease
that has a dotted line on it, in the middle
of the page. unfold.
5. Refold the sheet of paper in half the
long way. The printed side of the sheet
should be visible.
6. Push page cover-1 toward page 4-5 so
the middle pages form a diamond. Push
together so these front-back pages form:
cover-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7.
7. Fold so the cover is on one side of
the booklet, page 7 is on the back of the
booklet, and all other pages are between
them. Your booklet is done.
